Ha, technically I did live through it, but I get what you mean. I went through my glam phase later in life, and this album is definitely a standout in the genre and a great hard rock/heavy metal album in general, but I wouldn't call it a stone cold classic especially not when the band themselves topped it pretty comprehensively with the follow up.

Lol it doesn't matter. And you didn't live through it at the time, therefore, you don't know. I agree the follow up had songs that were more comprehensive, probably a little more difficult to play, and certainly rocked. But none of that means it's better.

When you download a torrent of a groups discography, and decipher all of their albums in a month, a lot gets lost in translation. It's evident with this album.

Wait, what? Listening to the two albums back to back devoid of any of the noise caused by random emotional attachment and association with time and place and cultural weight is a probably a more objective evaluation of the actual music's merits.

Don't get me wrong, I love this album, but nothing on it tops to the drop in Monkey Business and or the riff on Slave to the Grind. IMO, of course. That album takes everything that made this album great and improved on it while dropping the cliched (few though they were) glammy elements.

The noise and emotional attachment is all part of the ride my friend. Having the ability to associate a record with what was going on at that time is priceless.

And Sweet Little Sister, Youth Gone Wild, and 18 and Life destroys anything and everything off of Slave To The Grind. It also sold about 40% of what this sold, number of units wise, and for good reason. A band has a time and place. Unfortunately, Skid Row arrived a little late.

Haha! Agree to disagree bud. But I have plenty of emotional attachment to both albums because of the time and place I discovered both of them, and there's tons of great music on both FWIW. :]

I agree that both rule, as I still to this day listen to both in my rotation today (and I know you do too). And many agree with you.

But the debut is straight up one of the best of its kind. The follow up cant even be considered due to the musical change in direction. And many did that style so much better. A lot of fans didn't even care about Slave when it was released.

But I love Slave, especially due to what was happening to hard rock and metal at that time.

Yeah, I do love the sleaziness of this even if I prefer the toughness of Slave. Piece of Me goes haaaaard. Also, best sleazy hard rock since GnR bruh, cmon!

Album is class but Slave is so metal.

Prefer that to this definitely, Quicksand Jesus is the best ballad ever as well.
