Having some to the Northlane party pretty late (somewhere between Mesmer & Alien) and, with the release of their latest (underwhelming) effort, I thought it would go back and get a bit of additional context on this band & the evolution of their sound.
I can understand the original hype, this album slaps. Excellent debut.

I was too busy fucking with dubstep & drum & bass at the time, so the rise and rise of modern-day metalcore kinda passed me by. I guess the benefits of that are that I'm not quite as jaded and cynical as others when it comes to the genre, but I missed out on some absolute jams.

I'm doing the opposite now kinda lol, been super into breakcore and shit lately and been putting core stuff off to the side.
And yea I get why people have been liking the new stuff but it just isn't my cup of tea

I really like Alien but Obsidian didn't leave a great impression on me first time round. Currently listening to Node at the moment and it seems to be suffering from that same lack of power & punch from the guitars that Obsidian has. The djuns just don't...djun properly.
I don't know whether that was a stylistic choice or something lost in production?

stylistic choice or not, node j sounds fuckin awful either way lmao

Yea Node had some pretty bad production and lacked all punch, it sounded like somebody sucked all the air out of everything lol. It was weird going from this, which has like perfect progcore production and Singularity which also has great production, to Node which was so lifeless

even weirder considering fuckin putney produced it. im not even necessarily as hyped on him as everybody else but that is faaaaaaaaaar and away the worst sounding record ive ever heard him do. at least he redeemed himself by makin stillworld sound good as fuck

Putney is so hit or miss lol, egregiously so

yea fr. not that imo anything else hes done is like, node level bad, but a huge chunk of his records over the last 2-3 years especially sound artificial af that they lose a lot of beef and end up not hitting hard at all
and then a handful of his records sound great lmao ya never know what youre gonna get w that mf
