iced tea is allowable, but "diabetes-sweet and iced" puts the fear of God in me

lumping MCR, loathe and the downward spiral together as the same thing just because they all cater to angst is a terrifying broad stoke

iirc i bricked it on Loathe because their songwriting is a dysfunctional pile of jank, which i'd stand by forever. TDS is a copious vent; it's not an awful record, but the lyrics are frequently dogshit and there's a recurring sense that its depth is propped up by its prod (which ironically undermines half the grit the subject matter would otherwise have had - if i'm gonna tune into a feel-like-shit record of that type, imma need a little more ugliness and a lot less whingy bs)

this is in a whole different league. nostalgia defs plays a role, but i've crash-tested it well beyond those confines at this point - these songs are tightly written, really fun in their camp and melodrama, self-aware and craftful in their stylisation and classic rock homage, and ultimately super empowering in their scope. don't get the comparison with the other two at all.

and re. trent:

"While I was working on Downward Spiral, I was living in the house where Sharon Tate was killed. Then one day I met her sister. It was a random thing, just a brief encounter. And she said: "Are you exploiting my sister's death by living in her house?" For the first time the whole thing kind of slapped me in the face. I said, "No, it's just sort of my own interest in American folklore. I'm in this place where a weird part of history occurred." I guess it never really struck me before, but it did then. She lost her sister from a senseless, ignorant situation that I don't want to support. When she was talking to me, I realized for the first time, "What if it was my sister?" I thought, "Fuck Charlie Manson. I don't want to be looked at as a guy who supports serial-killer bullshit." I went home and cried that night. It made me see there's another side to things, you know? It's one thing to go around with your dick swinging in the wind, acting like it doesn't matter. But when you understand the repercussions that are felt ... that's what sobered me up: realizing that what balances out the appeal of the lawlessness and the lack of morality and that whole thing is the other end of it, the victims who don't deserve that"

which (from '97 with the rolling stone) is nice and good and one step towards a character development that turned out worked well for him, but if I don't want to be looked at as a guy who supports serial-killer bullshit is what it took for the penny to drop for him, a boi can't help but wonder how much of a poser he was at the time

And Trent was totally a poser. Literally. He’d go through the motions and pose, like something’s supposed to happen and it’s understandable, but it’s lame if you’re coming at it from an angle of tourism in the hopes that it’ll rub something off on your personal idiosyncrasies and will pass on to the art like Trent

"lumping MCR, loathe and the downward spiral together as the same thing just because they all cater to angst is a terrifying broad stoke" less "the same thing", more "achieve similar goals in different contexts musically

"i bricked it on Loathe because their songwriting is a dysfunctional pile of jank, which i'd stand by forever." the jank i believe is supposed to be a representation of decaying mental health, and i thought you liked jank for the janked?

as for the trent stuff i mean i guess he is a poser in that regard but i wouldn't hold it against him any more than i wouldn't hold not living the bit against gangsta rappers. i don't think i'd feel as comfortable listening to someone rap about murdering people if they actually DID murder people.

Oh, i agree. We’re all posers if we adopt something we don’t live. I’d rather people not be out murdering other people for art. That’d be horrific. Fiction in art is fine as long as you draw the line and not try to wear it as a new coat

Oh for sure tbh. Like I know power metal bands aren't literally going out there and slaying beasts, there's a place for fictional and fantasy writing. Is super fantasy based writing my thing, largely no unless it's a fantasy of more a dystopian kind. But that's just a me issue it's not that they're bad it's that I don't feel anything from it a lot. It's the same reason I don't have interest in LOTR, plus the film lengths are prohibitive.

Just imagining how bad reviews would read if every reviewer felt the need to intro it with “yeah but uh yeah this is only my opinion of course and yours is just as valid and I don’t hold the secret key to the magical god realm of pure and undiluted understanding so I’m just going to share my opinion with you here do with it what you will I am but a meek and humble interpreter and I pray you indulge my trifling fancies.”

God what a better world that would be, instead of just, you know, understanding that it goes without saying that a review is an opinion and we shouldn’t have to hold your hand and tuck you in at night with sweet soft assurances.

Anyway Teenagers is hot dog shit cut it and this would automatically jump at least .5

teenagers is a good fun song and it sort of fits thematically with the universe this is in, its just smack dab in the middle of a potentially unfuckwithable stretch of music and it's a slight bit jarring in that position. move it to earlier or make it the "Vampire Money" of the album and have it AFTER famous last words alongside Blood would fit better imo.

also writing reviews in a formal and professional format is fine but some people certainly may have it in their heads that they believe they're better than everyone bc of their opinions

I love Heaven Help Us, but something in the vibe, maybe it’s the production, doesn’t sit well with me in the tracklist. Hmm… might have to experiment

my way home def wouldnt fit (unfort as that song is an absolute ripper and a half) but heaven help us feels consistent enough within the production and sonic style of the album to me. throwing it after sleep helps piece it into place better too since they share the same key region

its also a better song than almost all of this album outside of maybe two songs

I’ll queue it behind Teenagers sometime and give it a go! I get a feeling that’s a good spot
