I remember reading this review in 2020 thinking that this new country artist would get big. I didn’t think that is what he wanted so I have been kinda shocked by how huge he got in the last three years.

I don't know if I'd call it bland; the songwriting/instrumentation/production approaches on display often feel quite different from what landed him charting singles

I liked him both before and during his fame; new one just feels extremely by-the-numbers for him and lacks the emotional punch that even his most mainstream sounding hits have delivered in copious amounts.
