I got this on CD recently and just decided to rip the audio onto my laptop, but the media player decided to find the album details itself and thought that it was Stronghold by Summoning.

It's basically a carbon copy of Summoning, but I like it more than any Summoning album other than Stronghold.

This album gets better every time I listen to it. Every song is awesome. Even that dual-piano melody in Stone and Dust is kickass.

Mortal Sword is the guy in Ered Wethrin, isn't he? Both bands are from SLC, both on the same label, music sounds a little similar, vocals sound almost identical, and he's even got the long hair.

"he's even got the long hair"

A black metal singer with long hair? 8O

I said that because Mortal Sword has long hair while Shield Anvil has short hair.

I just thought of this album after deciding to give Summoning's "new" one some more love. Haven't listened to it in a while

but still:

This one was a grower for me, probably because of the runtime. It took me around 5 listens to start appreciating it but

sadly that appreciation waned at around listens 8-10. Strange because the grower albums are usually the ones that end

up having really good replay value. I still enjoy it but I guess I was disappointed with how "shallow" it ended up being.

I'll readily admit that I've not heard a great deal of Summoning yet, but I've sampled their discography on YouTube. Any track on this album is significantly better than the Summoning songs I've sampled, and together they comprise the best epic/folk/fantasy black metal album I've ever heard.

I honestly can't remember the last time I've been this impressed by every single song on a new CD—especially by such a small band of unknown artists. Echoes of Battle is colossal, and based on what I've heard of Summoning I'd say they have a lot to learn from Shield Anvil and Mortal Sword.

On a tangential note, Shield Anvil and I have been talking via email over the past day or so and he seems like an extremely cool, intelligent person. I like that.

You can't just sample a few Summoning songs bro. Go through their discography and you'll realize that Caladan Brood still have a ways to go before they can say they can match Summoning. This is an excellent and very promising debut though.

This is better than a few Summoning albums, but can't touch their best stuff.

Agreed it has worn off a little bit. Still rules though.
