I'd probably listen to II, Curtains and Simple Pleasure before the new one as it might be confusing going to that one next as it really follows their soul stuff since Simple Pleasure

Basically all their albums from SP on are near enough interchangeable

This blue's a swirling ocean

The green: the ambition

The red is the guilt

There's a lot of red...

Damn this guy really gives Mark Hollis a run for his money

Not in vocal chops I mean, but in his distaste for singing directly into a microphone

I think "Patchwork" is emerging as my favorite here, love love love the lyrics and the outro with the horns is just perfect.

I just like that stretch from Blood to Marbles - all 5/5 songs for me, and Patchwork is often my favourite of the four

The album could/should have shed three songs - the alt version of Tyed, Paco de Renaldo's Dream and Tea Stain could all go and nothing would be lost really.

Saying that, none of them really detract as such - and the the band weren't aiming for a streamlined album. They wanted four sides of vinyl, and it probably made a lot of sense listened to that way - as four separate sides.

Everything I crave I become

Everything I left forgotten

Everything I love I become

Cause that's what happens when you reach the bottom...

Their lyrics are a goldmine

Yeah I'm digging 'em, took a while though because the themes admittedly are very similar thoughout.

Agreed that there is some expendable material here, but you know what I'm ok with that because it's insanely consistent even so, it really doesn't feel like 77 minutes, flies right by. Like it dips ever so slightly in the second half, but it's barely noticeable.

They do sort of focus on the two topics of romantic failings and nostalgia a lot of the time

The lyrics are relatively straight forward in their meanings/intentions but just so well written

The not knowing is easy

And the suspecting, that’s okay

Just don’t tell me for certain

That our love’s gone away

It’s gone away...

I need this back on Spotify (US)… the second album and Curtains just don't hit the same.

I listened to this around a year ago and it didn't really move me much. Now? The rating says it all. Utterly magnificent.
