Is this really one of their best? I've only heard their first 4

idk if it's their best, but it's easily their most polarizing. definitely listen to it.

saw them play it in its entirety live when it came out. shit ruled.

This is their third best imo Sandwich. If you like their more epic, story-focused songs then this is definitely worth a try. Certainly it's their most interesting and varied release.

repaid is their best song ever imo. indie rock bohemian rhapsody.

It's hard to pick out which songs from this individually are among their best but if I had to pick I'd choose "Annan Water" or "The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned)".

Completely love this album. Their others never clicked with me, any recommendations for where to go next?

Preach it, flowerboy. I feel as you do.

There are good songs scattered throughout their discography, but not much like this.

Agreed William Blake drawing-man (correct?)! Their others never really work like this one. Pity, because we know they are capable of something of this quality.

Y’all wack, every one of their albums except for their newest is at least excellent. One of the best bands of the millennium.

They're all fun albums and often touching (let's not talk about the last one), but this one is best suited for us metal fans.

The Decemberists run completely contrary to my metal side and I think to view them as anything other than the unique group they are does them a disservice. This album was probably a gateway into their stuff for me. But, Castaways & Cutouts, Picaresque, and The Crane Wife are all top notch albums.

I personally love The Tain EP, which encapsulates just about everything great about the band in one 30min song.
