With catchy pop-punk hooks, and emotional arragements and lyrics, Brand New have not taken long to shoot up the ladder in popularity. While their first album was a strictly pop-punk affair, Deja Entendu is an emotional indie rock album. While the album is whiney and typical of the genre that most people call "emo", it is a much more mature record than the previous effort from the band.

With Deja Entendu, Brand New prove that they've stepped up in the music world. However, much of the album proves that they still have a long way to go. The lyrics on this album are much deeper and have a much less narrow minded perspective. As well as this, they are written about more than simple sour relationships with girls. Although the mood of the album is almost always a negative one, Brand New have managed to write some brilliant lyrics, although it's not all good. The existence of some rather terrible lines really do hurt an otherwise excellent lyrical performance.
What stops this album from being truly excellent is not the lyrics, but the musical side. There are really only two styles of song on Deja Entendu. The first is the heavy blast of screaming or loud singing and distorted guitars. The second is the soft acoustic track. While it's good to have two different sounds, the predictibility of the album gets unbearable after a while. Despite these issues, Brand New are able to make some truly beautiful songs that are extremely moving. "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" is an excellent song with one of the best guitar riffs ever heard in this style. Not only this, it has excellent lyrics and a good contrast between the verse and chorus. Other highlights include "Good To Know If I Ever Need Attention All I Have To Do Is Die", "Okay I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't" and "Me vs Maradona vs Elvis". All of these tracks feature the excellent interplay between the guitars, good bass riffs that fit in with the music and pounding drums that provide dynamics. Over the top is Jesse Lacey singing his sad, sarcastic and cynical lyrics. Brand New's second album is nowhere near perfect, but it sure has some great songs and shows the progressive maturity of the band. Hopefully with their next release they can put out something even better,

This is a really threadbare and insufficient review.

This pretty much sums up what works for and simeltaneously kills Brand New. They have no diversity. They have written some decent songs, but in the end they can't vary themselves because they are already extremely derivative. The verse bass riff from "Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades" might as well have sampled directly from some Fugazi songs and some of the soft to loud songs are piss poor versions of great Braid songs. I feel sorry for this band because for every poignant, good song they write ("I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't"), they write 4 terrible ones.

Ya, in response to DFelon, Brand New has no diversity? Look at "Your Favorite Weapon" and compare it to "Deja Entendu". Big difference.

Definitely not the best album of 2003, even Blink-182's self titled blows this away. It's still a good album though I think, my favorites are 'Guernica' & 'Okay, I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't

I really like this CD. The single Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades has a great bass riff, and the lyrics are well written to fit he music. Guernica is another song that the really aggressive chorus works well in, and again, the lyrics are well written, which is a recurring theme on all the good songs. Jaws theme swimming is cleverly done.
Good To Know That If I Ever Need Attention All I Have To Do Is Die has their most diverse moment, with the "different" sounding vocals and cool instrumentals.
The main lack of diversity is in the feel of the choruses, and a lot of the song structures. But there are subtle differences even then.
I'd say this album was a step in the right direction for them, and shows they're capable of more than just pop-punk. I feel they're capable of much more in the future.This Message Edited On 06.07.05

This is my most 'wow, I like this group' album.
Consistent, even if a little generic at times. But its in the top half of my CD collection, and was listened to death last summer

So it's diversity when a band drops their crappy pop punk style and adopts a decent indie/pop punk one?
Does that mean when Limp Bizkit had Method Man guest MC on that song, they became instantly diverse? No. Not at all. Diversity within the album is what matters.
Lastly, who even listens to Your Favorite Weapon anyway? Deja Entendu is the only worthwhile thing goin on.
