2 of 2 thought this review was well written

Last week I was looking around the local Best Buy nearest to my home. I had intentions to purchase “Sing the Sorrow" by AFI, but when sifting through the T section I happened upon a Live EP from Thrice and it was free if I bought another Thrice album. It only contained three tracks, but two of them are both standouts from 2005s “Vheissu", “Atlantic" and “Red Sky". There also is an acoustic version of “Stare At The Sun", which is another standout track from Thrice’s highly praised, “The Artist In The Ambulance. It was $6 and for three tracks only there was no way I was going to buy it by itself so I passed on “Sing the Sorrow" and went for both this Live EP and “The Artist In The Ambulance".

Dustin’s singing on here is as open and beautiful as it is on Thrice’s studio albums. Anyone who is only a fan of Thrice’s heavier material won’t want this, unless they are curious for the alternate version of “Stare At The Sun", which is the best thing this EP has to offer. The acoustic guitar opens the song and there is a missed absence of the bass, but Dustin, the guitar, and string attachment are so epic I completely forget about any faults I initially had. It’s not exactly like that for “Atlantic" and “Red Sky" though. Both truly are great songs, but with no audience to be heard and only slight differences in quality the recorded studio versions are almost copycats. Save for the strings that dominate two songs, “Red Sky" and then “Stare At The Sun". The only real difference on “Atlantic" there is no acoustic guitar, which is a main part of the studio recording and Dustin’s voice is elevated a tad more.

Even a huge Thrice fan may not consider this worth six dollars. After all since the Live EP only contains three tracks and tops out at just over twelve-minutes this wouldn’t last long in a playlist. There isn’t too much of a difference between studio and live recordings for the “Vheissu" songs, but the acoustic version of “Stare At The Sun" may be the one deciding factor. The strings that are present in each song and Dustin’s singing are the strongest things going for the Live EP, but in the end it comes down to a matter of cost and if you’re willing to buy a full-length Thrice CD. If you are willing enough to then you may just find this worth it, I know I do, but it’s simply not worth six dollars, no matter what way it’s spun.

If anyone can find a picture of the album cover that would be great. I searched Best Buy's website and googled different things and still couldn't find a picture.

Haha, I've never been in a Best Buy. This has my two favorite Thrice songs on it, but I won't be shelling out an hours pay at minimum wage for this.

Your review was mighty short, but then again there wasn't much to review.

Haven't seen Thrice live, but I've heard that they sound just like the album, perfect.

This kinda sucks, I bought my copy of Vheissu like a month ago and they had no such deal. They also don't carry any other albums of theirs at my Best Buy. Yet they carry every single Children of Bodom album, and I bought Acrobatic Tenement there. Gay.

That sucks, I don't see how they can't carry them. The Best Buy here as all except their self-released album.

Yeah same with mine, sometimes Identity Crisis can be difficult to stumble upon but everything else they usually have at the Best Buy's near me.

Wasn''t it recorded for the iTunes store? If so I have it thinking it was never released. It's good, but ambient and the over-distortion bothers me a bit. But Thrice live is always amazing.

I saw this at Best Buy also. I almost mistook it for the Red Sky EP. I bought Circle Takes The Square "As The Roots Undo" that day instead for 7 dollars. I only had 10 dollars with me that day because I didn't want to spend much and I always hear how cheap cds are over there. They also had the same deal.
