3 of 4 thought this review was well written
Flaw was a four piece nu-metal band from Lexington, Kentucky. They used to have five members, until one left for an on stage dilemma and the tensions were getting high. Soon after they recorded this CD, the band broke up, and vocalist went to Five.Bolt.Main, another nu-metal band and has done good work there. This CD is their sophomore effort, entitled "Endangered Species", was released May 5, 2004, and is very well a maturity for the band Flaw. Although their first CD was a success, I didn't know if this one would live up to the hype. As soon as I heard the first few singles off of this, I knew these guys have gotten better (it isn'’t the case now, because they have disbanded).
Flaw was (for Endangered Species):
Chris Volz - Vocals, Piano
Ryan Jurhs - Bass, vocals
Lance Arny - Guitars
Micah Havertape - Drums
The sound of this album is incredible, to say the least, the guitars are powerful, the vocals are heard well and sung EXTREMELY well. The bass is audible, as usual with Flaw. Chris really puts emotion into his songs and it shows, as Wait For Me is a perfect example of a ballad by these guys, it is the ballad on the CD and they do it well. These guys also prove that they can rock, as we all listen to You’ve Changed, you can tell he can somewhat rap, or do a Corey Taylor type thing, but it shows the better side of it. You can change from one song to another and notice that it is another song. The single, Recognize gives us a soft guitar intro that is very soothing and the whole song follows in that pattern. It is the most mainstream song on here, and it shows. Medicate, the first song on the CD, is one of my favorite, if not my favorite. It is a complete rock song, and shows some Disturbed influences in here. Worlds Divide is where we start to get the viola, and is very well played. It starts to get repetitive near the end of that song, but it gets the point across. There are two solos on the album, and they are found in All the Worst and Final Cry. They are very well done and add to the effect of the song.
The lyrics are great, just as they always have been with Flaw. In songs like Not Enough, All the Worst and Decide, the lyrics are great. In All the Worst, I think that it could be talking about the 9/11 attacks. If you listen to it carefully, you can notice that almost every word in that song relates to a war of some kind. It is kind of creepy if you ask me.
Quote:
"There's something about this place
It brings out all the worst
Our history's been disgraced
Who will destroy who first?"
|
These are the lyrics to the chorus of All the Worst, and in the context of the rest of the song, it matches with the 9/11 attacks very well. In Decide, he gets his point across very well, it is just one of those songs that he does well.
My impression on this CD is that it was a huge step forward for Flaw, even though they ended up disbanding shortly after recording this. If you like Flaw, good nu-metal (Mudvayne) or hard rock in general, get this. It is well worth the money. I am going to give this a 4.5/5

it's kind of short, but a different format, comments and suggestions please
| | | Like you said, it is a bit short. Still, it's probably your best. Good to see you moving away from the TBT's.

Good recommendations - i hope the order isn't accidental ( Congratulations if it's not)

yeah, it is in order of the tracklist, but Medicate sets the stage for the whole album and takes it where they left off before.

i was lucky enough to see flaws last concert ever in their hometown louisville (where i'm from, born and raised!). it was amazing to say the least even though the lead singer was drunk and kept crying lol. amazing concert.

Volz sings beautifully. He is for sure one of the best vocalists in the whole nu-metal scene.
The latter half of Decide is just amazing & the lyrics have so great message, as I must cite:
"Didn't mean to complicate tomorrow
Didn't have to make you feel that way
Didn't come to irritate your morals
Why did you push me far away?"
Digging: The Pineapple Thief - Tightly Unwound | | | Don't give up on hope...
DON'T GIVE UP ON HOPE...
Don't give because its hope that binds us
Pain that guides us
Who do we trust when those things remind us
Its hope that guides us
Pain that binds us
Who do we trust when they're not behind us?
Do i even need to say nething about the greatness of these lyrics? I think not

Firstly Flaw was not nu-metal as their music was much too diverse, a few tracks off
Through the Eyes had a nu-metal vibe and that was it.
Also the beginning of the song Recognize is a bassline not guitar. The review isn't
that great or all that well written but at least the guy likes Flaw... that's better than
someone who knows nothing about music and is a considered a music "critic" and
trys to make up reasons why a band is terrible or throwing out random bands and
saying they sound exactly alike.
Endangered Species is a classic album to me, the promotion was piss poor but
200,000 units or whatever it sold is still very respectable. I love every track, Ryan
and Lance did some incredible writing for that record and it's definitely one of Volz's
best works but he's one of the best vocalists in the world and none of his stuff
disappoints. Species could have been a bit heavier but Medicate, You've Changed
and Final Cry provide enough of the heavy stuff, the rest is great rock that is
professional and top notch writing that includes the hooks and melodies necessary
to write a great song.
All and all amazing record and horrible promotion job done by Universal who
eventually dropped them. I think they did the same thing with RA who was also an
unbelievable band. This Message Edited On 11.10.07

flaw is then "not mainstream, but mainstream" group everyone needs to get into.. its a very good cd and the vocalist is one of the best out there . they do a good job for being in the alternative/nu metal genre as far as musicianship goesThis Message Edited On 04.17.08

kinda bland, but they got some pretty damn good musicianship.

Easily one of my favorite albums of all time. Chris imo is one of the best vocalists in the hard rock/alt. metal scene. Its a shame they can't really work things out with the original lineup.
Digging: Porcupine Tree - The Incident | | | I want another album. Why won't they just solve there problems with each other through hugs

Why don't they just hate each other and put out another album anyway? Confrontation makes for good music... and this band makes good music.
| | | Good point willie...but at this point I don't care how the do it, I just want them to do it soon.

A decent review. The writing could be a bit better if you ask me, but just keep writing. As for my general opinion, I like this album a lot less because the songs lack a punch if you ask me. Something in Chris' vocals feel weak. He sounds genuine and mature, but he could've sounded better. He was great with Five.Bolt.Main though. Also, "Medicate" is one of my favorite songs on the album. I also agree with the lyrics department. Not brilliant lyrics, but they're pretty good.
