3 of 4 thought this review was well written

Alternative rock act Chevelle, released their debut album, Point #1 in 1999 and met with some success, but not anything that would guarantee the band a future in the music business. Three years later with the release of their second album Wonder What’s Next, that all changed. Riding on a string of popular radio hits, such as The Red and the title track Wonder What’s Next, this album eventually went platinum. My opinion of the album is varied, but I rather enjoy this album, despite some repetitiveness.

**Musically, this album is the catchiest album from the Loeffler three. The guitar, bass, and drums mesh well together to create some catchy, yet at the same time, heavy music. Sam Loeffler compliments both the bass and guitar well with some interesting, while at the same time, simple beats. I especially like the job that he does on Send the Pain Below, nothing fancy, but gets the job done and done well at that. Bassist Joe Loeffler has some nice lines here and there, but just doesn’t make enough of a difference for me to be able to call him a great bassist. This album is most likely his weakest that he did for Chevelle, although I do really enjoy the bass lines he plays in An Evening With El Diablo, especially the opening part where the bass is heard by itself for a while. The guitar from singer Pete is rather entertaining despite simplicity, no one ever said simplicity is a bad thing. The guitar is really all just riffs and sometimes that’s all a song will dispense, something that I didn’t find to be to good for this album.* Sometimes there will be use of acoustic guitar parts, such as on Closure, which provides some variety, slightly. My overall favorite song on the album musically is without a doubt the title track, as well as the heaviest song on the album, Wonder What’s Next. Despite criticisms, I find this album to be musically entertaining for it’s catchiness.**

Sam’s singing is done very well for this record and for me, actually keeps things from getting repetitive fast. Most will compare his voice to that of Manyard James Keenan, but I have never really liked his voice and I like Sam’s. Notwithstanding however, I still do recognize the comparisons made between the two vocalists. Sometimes Sam will go from just regular clean singing to trying to have a rougher sounding voice. Sometimes that will work, but mostly it doesn’t. The song Wonder What’s Next is one of the only times where Sam’s singing that way will work. Other favorites of Sam’s singing are Don’t Fake This which is my favorite song on the album and then An Evening With El Diablo that has an excellent chorus going for it.**

I do have some complaints to mention about this album. The first is that even though the music is nice and catchy, it doesn’t show real talent to me. I think that the guitar could have some more interesting leads and possibly a solo would have worked in some songs even. Also, sometimes some songs will start to sound the same to me, meaning that the album will eventually get repetitive. Other than those two things, I find that this album is actually really good and an improvement over Point #1. My favorite songs off of this album are most likely Wonder What’s Next, An Evening With El Diablo, and last, as well as greatest, Don’t Fake This. Overall this is in between a good and a great album leading to a rating of 3-3.5 out of 5. Thank you for reading this review and I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks.

Daaaaaaaaaaaamn, do I ever hate these guys. Their music is beyond bland. It almost makes me want to reach into my skull and scrape out my eyes.

A few things on the review:

"Also, sometimes some songs will start to sound the same to me causing a feeling of repetitiveness."

That's the most redundant sentence I've ever heard.

The review went round and round in circles the whole time. It was odd.

I'm guessing that's a bad thing. :-/

I'm going to fix that sentence and look for others similar to it.

Interesting. Now we have two WWN albums listed. A merge can solve that quickly.

Anyway, the only song I can stand here is Family System. That one has a few good riffs.

Hello? Anyone? I'd like some others to comment. Especially those that might happen to like Chevelle.

Damn, I just looked at a tab and they do tune low. It's like Korn, only Pete isn't toneless.

Score one for me and Jom (on the Family System comment).

I love this album. I picked it up after hearing "The Red" and despite the repetitiveness and simple riffing, I think this album packs a huge punch. If you can get past the fact that they aren't instrumental gods, I think it's a very good album. The new album showed massive instrumental improvement but on the whole lost the brooding, dark feel that this album has. I love that heavy part at the end of "Closure," it's a shame the song pretty much sucks and drags up until that part. My favorite tracks are "Wonder What's Next," "Grab Thy Hand," and "Family System."

True, TToT(CDUI) is a massive intstrumental improvement, but when you say that they lost their "brooding, dark feel", I am completely opposite of you. I think they gained a darker feeling with their latest album.

In places it is, but I think songs like "Grab Thy Hand" and "Wonder What's Next" really embody the desperate, angry feeling of this album.

I'd have to say, this is one of those guilty pleasure bands. I listened the hell out of this cd. Yeah, the songs aren't the most technical, and are easy for a novice guitarist like me to play, but come on. Its all about what gets your head moving and your foot tapping, and Chevelle can do that for me.
I give this album a 4/5

If all those relatively easy to play songs weren't out there, a lot of us wouldn't really get into the guitar/bass/drums. For instance, the song Patterns In The Ivy by Opeth inspired me to play. I knew it would be tough, but after a lot of practice, I got it down. It's not hard anymore of course but it was for me back then.

I loved this release at the time I got it (which was about age 10-11 or so).
Even today, there's still a few good, catchy songs on here. It's nothing mindblowing at all, but it's decent on occasion.

I actually really like this album.
I think, for what they are, Chevelle is a good band, not great...but good. I saw them in concert, though, and thought they were bland. But this album is very well done. The riffs are great (my favorite riff is Family System and Wonder What's Next). I think all the songs are solid and I love the simplicity of AEWED and as a bassist, when I'm warming up when my band plays Drop C, I always play it.
I dont know why people rag them, I think they are a good band that has some pretty bad ass songs, but the album is repetetive, so I can see the complaints. I give this album a 4...its their best.
