Darkness. Black. Doom. You see only and endless darkness, not even a crack of light. A swirling vortex dances in front of you, a painful, yet addictive vortex. Random symmetrical figures dance around you. Spinning, horribly, you beg and plead to stop. This my friend, this awesome pain is The Illusion Of Motion.
YOB is a very strange band. Coming from Eugene, Oregon in the mid 90's, they don't sound like much from Oregon; in fact, anything. They defiently have a heavy progressive inlfuence, a very gloomy doom metal-esque approach, and almost a dense and doomy sludge-metal sound. I can't describe a band that sounds like YOB.
The multi-talented and good ranged Mike Scheidt can pull off an even denser and raspy scream than Cult Of Luna's vocalist can. It almost sounds like a cross between Cult of Luna's vocalist and Aborted's vocalist. His clean vocals can even sound like Dave Mustaine with a distorted voice and less of an annoying gravely voice, with Mike's own touch. If I mentioned, he can go extremely low to a high screech. What about his guitar playing? It's very good for the genre. Mike can pull of very good shred solos, and some dark riffage. The other instruments are pretty standard, actually. But everything is leveled off greatly. They aren't afraid to bring in some effects and noises too.
YOB can pull off a song with a few repeatitive riffs and cake a ton of shit on to it (mostly seen in Exorcism Of The Host). It's never boring, always crushing just like Khanate. Obviosly, this album may seem excessively hard to access. With songs arguably way past the point of radio play, and a strong aquired taste. Not for the non-patient mainstream listener. Mike's lyrics are incredibly great, but hard to dechipher. Variety and swelling, mesmerizing licks are found everywhere. You can sit down and listen to the whole CD, watching time tick away. You may cringe at your first listen, but YOB will grow on you like a killer fungus.
The Illusion Of Motion is an extremely hard album to listen to, not reccomended for any casual listener. After listening, I can hardly find anything wrong with it. Except listeners may find it boring, unless you listen to Progressive. The only other flaw, is that like most vocalists, Mike gives a certain touch to the band. Some listeners may not like his vocals.
A 4.6/5
I'm kind of in a rush to get the review done, so I'm sorry. If you would want to download any track, pick any of the four tracks. Doom #2 is HIGHLY reccomended.
Finally, YOB is;
Mike Scheidt - vocals/guitar
Isamu Satu - bass
Gabe Morley - drums
