Summary: Despite being slightly uniform, Harmonic 313 is a mostly satisfying return of one of electonica's most valued maestros.

Mark Pritchard is notable for his prolific body of work, releasing music on numerous nom de plumes over the years as well as participating in countless collaborations. However, nothing truly substantial has emerged from Pritchard’s most recent work; nothing has emerged that could compare to the monumental achievements he made with his most successful project, being the influential ambient-house act Global Communication.

Until now: with Harmonic 313, Pritchard’s finally gotten over the daunting hump that Global Communication’s success presented. He manages this by variation: When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence barely resembles anything Pritchard created with his previous acts, but this is an odd positive for the English artist, as it truly separates himself from his past demons.

His new work also proves that this dormant period doesn’t mean that Pritchard hasn’t been avidly paying attention to current trends in electronica music. When Machines certainly has a Flying Lotus or Prefuse 73 type of feel: all carefully syncopated and superbly crafted rhythms, heavy basslines, and plenty of static. Pritchard also creates a vintage feel by splicing dated-sounding synths with anachronistic hip-hop rhythms, as shown on tracks such as the dark “Call to Arms” and “Don’t Panic”, the latter being a woozy, swirling mess of almost corny-sounding synths and acid-dripped madness that somehow all makes sense after subsequent listens.

When Machines is almost completely instrumental, which is by no means a bad thing, especially considering most everything here---from the meandering chillness of “Koln” to the noisy, suffocating “Quadrant 3”---is engaging enough on its own. However, as “Battlestar” proves, Pritchard’s spacious and repetitive beats may be best suited for a vocalist to embellish on. “Battlestar” features Elzhi and Phat Kat---two extremely talented rappers that hail from Detroit---and, while Pritchard doesn’t offer his greatest beat for these two visionaries to spit on, the duo’s slick rhymes more than make up for any ineptness. It’s easily the most entertaining track on the album, suggesting that When Machines would’ve been even better with a few more guest spots.

When Machines unfortunately is slightly homogeneous: unlike Los Angeles or Donuts, this album fails to strike out any form of identity or image for its creator, instead just blending with a increasingly saturated genre. For what it is, When Machines is a reasonably entertaining collection of spare beats, courtesy of a long-hibernating maestro that’s just trying to get back in the game.

i quite enjoyed a few of the tracks on here, agree that this would be a lot more interesting with a few more guest spots though.

Mark has definitely not been Dormant since he and Tom went there separate ways.
He has had at least 5 Albums out and countless ep's, Some of which maybe not your thing but trust me there is some amazing
music that he has produced. I don't think he has struggled at all. As for following trends some of these Harmonic 313 tracks
have been knocking about for years, way before Flying lotus came on the scene, you have obviously been sleeping.
I believe that the album does has a signature sound and you can here a personality in the music, maybe your not checking it deep
enough. I do agree that it would be great with more guests but i also am glad that there isn't on this in away, i just hope there
are more in the future, the beat on Battlestar is dope, it leaves space for the vocals to come through, its not over cluttered.
You should check out the ? track that he just released, thats easily as good as any Global Communication track. The Harmonic 33
Music for Tv and film album was slept on until Madlib sampled it.
Oh and he is definitely not Australian, i believe he is from the Uk.

he's had a few albums, but nothing substantial (or good)
and the earliest thing i could find from him was from 05, and those tracks sound nothing like this
and you're right about the Australian mistake; my source was fucked

Thats just your opinion, but id say that you probably don't listen to much music or really know what's going on.
The Troubleman project was around 2000, his Stereo people mix 1998 is a classic, and just after that 2 remixes of Azymuth
which were amazing especially the Carambola remix, that got played in Garage clubs and Broken beat clubs and i even heard it
at FWD early days.
The first Harmonic 33 album was around the same time if i remember correctly, and was a big record across Europe and well
respected.
His Reload album which was around 1993 was in my opinion far superior to the Global Com album.
His releases on Droppin science under the name Use of Weapons were dope.
Infact i could go on, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Actually i will go on haha, Listen to Isolation - Pulusha 1997 again kills the Global stuff,
? - Mark Pritchard just released on a 10" is more than good/substantial.

Yes i am a bit of a fan! But yeah i always get pissed off when i see un - researched and ill informed reviews of artists that i
like.

this isn't ill-informed just because i didn't like the same stuff you like doesn't make it ill-informed, it's called fucking opinions, don't be such an idiot
what's funny is that you're mistaking harmonic 313 for harmonic 33 when they're two completely different projects; harmonic 313 started in 2005 and is an off-shoot (but a different project) of harmonic 33
anyways idk why i'm arguing with you when you're going to come back with a long, retarded, fanboyish post anyways

There is nothing retarded about my post.

Why do you write reviews on forums if you cant take some criticism. Isn't that what its all about?
Do you just expect people just to agree with you?

I can take criticism but your comments are so off-base (saying I don't know what's going on? Wtf? Could you be a bigger asshole?) and you're obviously completely biased (saying some half-baked mix is a classic or whatever is pretty lol) that it's just ridiculous. Mind you, I gave this a positive review, and you're lambasting it like I gave this a 1 or something.
Anyways, what I'm getting at is I'm surprised this guy has such loyal fans, when I was under the impression he had none.

Heh, i sorta assumed this would be a Liberi review before I clicked on this. I had the chance to see him live at a festival a while back, but the stage he was on had the worst acoustics ever so we left. 's about all my experience with 313, unfortunately.
