0.0 Alabaster Jones | September 14th 17

Collectors' Items, while it's name may be misleading, is not a compilation. This was a recorded session that wasn't put to use before now, and although it's pretty standard save for a couple of tracks, it's still Miles Davis in the 50's, and there's really nothing bad you can find during that era. One song that is definitely of note is "No Line", a song which combines the contemplative and quieter nature of cool jazz with some classic hard bop speed and bluesiness. It's a very relaxed and pleasant outing despite the fact that they're all playing as fast as the LP gets, and this juxtaposition makes it an easy highlight. The opening rendition of "The Serpent's Tooth" is more standard than the aforementioned track, but you can't deny that it swings and that those short drum solos near the end are great. Again, it's solid stuff, and for this man during this era that's basically the bare minimum.
