Handguns have come through with an unexpectedly impressive & fun record, which neatly stands
above last year's mildly lacklustre Life Lessons. Where Life Lessons was a somewhat tepid
album that signified a band figuring out where to take themselves, Disenchanted radiates
with a confident self-awareness of the band's sound.
Mixing a level of growth and maturity with the equally appropriate measure of immaturity,
while cheesy at times, Disenchanted hearkens to the earlier stages of contemporary new-wave
pop punk band's careers. Sound clips such as on opener "Self Portrait" and shorter punk
interval "Carbon Copy Elitist" pay homage to the enjoyably cliched ethos of early 2000s pop
punk bands, while melodic riffs such as that of "Bury Me" and "Missed Calls" resonate with
the playful growth that the band perhaps took a little too sincerely on Life Lessons.
Alongside the typically infectious hooks that Handguns are deft at producing, Disenchanted
remains notable beyond the catchy melodies with the realist approach to lyrics, displayed
particularly on "The Worst in Me" - thereby separating Handguns from other less lyrically
substance-enamoured bands such as contemporaries Real Friends, or Man Overboard.
A staple in fun new-wave pop punk, Handguns play purely on their convention-adhering
strengths with 2015's light-hearted yet stylistically rich instalment Disenchanted.

Against all odds, Handguns makes a damn good pop punk album that combines killer hooks and relentless drumming with more reflective and catchy lyrics.
