Brian Eno was is a pioneer of ambient music. From his solo work to his collaborations, there is nothing he has made that isn't worth a look.

Synthesisers and production by Brian Eno

Brian Eno's first ambient work is a masterpiece and arguably his best. Made with nothing but synthesisers, Eno's album is not one that is made to be concentrated on for lengthy periods of time. To fully appreciate this album, the listener does not need to fully immerse themselves into the album, all they need to do is let it run as background music. However, more observant listeners will be rewarded by taking the time to focus on the music.

The album's first two tracks consist of slow piano work backed by synth parts and both are very beautiful. The second half of the album is purely synthesisers and is very relaxing. The album has a quality about, where a listener can hum parts of the songs at any time, but will also find it impossible to recall exactly how a song goes, partly due to the song lengths and partly due to the atmosphere the songs create. Eno;s work creates aural soundscapes that are as simple as they are genius.

This album is not revolutionary, but it is perfect for what it is, a simple piece of ambient music that would work when someone is trying to relax, but also in a place such as a coffee shop, a supermarket or an office, where the music will relax the listener. For a good ambient album, this is perfect and will not easily be beaten. A worthy purchase for any music listener, as long as the listener is able to realise that this is not a flashy album by any means. Possibly one of the simplest albums in existence and easily one of the best, Eno's first ambient work is a true classic. A truly mindblowing album, while at the same time, not mindblowing at all.

Pros

- Simple
- Beautiful
- Relaxing

Cons

- None

Cool review. I've been meaning to get into his works for awhile, I'll start with this.

I agree with the 2 previous comments. I've been wanting to check out Eno for awhile, and from your review, this album sounds like a good place to start.

I feel asleep to this in the car on the way to disney world the other day and I had bizarre dreams about traveling in the old days. Like, I imagined I was in a carriage from the 20's. Weird.

what a great piece of ambient work. this is the first eno album i ever heard, and although it unfortunately gave me a misjudgement on his other works, it made me fall in love with simplicity. good review too. it's hard to review an album that consists of four 10 minute tracks that loop the same piano riff over and over again.

I listened to this album in it's entirety in Malaga airport waiting for a flight and it was one of the most amazing musical experiences ever. I only have 'Another Green World' apart from this so I need to get more of the 'Ambient' series.

I have to be in the right mood to listen to this, but when I'm in that mood. Unparalleled beauty. 1/1 may do more, and travel further, but 1/2 is the highlight for me.

Oh and shouldn't the tracklisting be:
1. 1/1
2. 1/2
3. 2/1
4. 2/2

I'm not sure if I have the patience required to finish a record like this, but what I've heard so far is cool. Perhaps it will grow on me like AGW did, but for now I can't.

1/1 - first track, first side
2/1 - second track, first side
1/2 - first track, second side
2/2 - second track, second side

It's built around the original record format.

That said, great album, great review.

I find Ambient 4 far superior to this...dunno why, this just feels really basic (I know it's meant to be but 4 is a bit more experimental which is great)
