4 of 4 thought this review was well written
If you are a grind or death metal fan of any kind, you should probably know who Suffocation are. Suffocation are among the bands that revolutionized the genre of death metal as we know it; making it became faster, stronger, more complex, and just plain better. Effigy of The Forgotten is the band’s debut album, and was the amazing start of one of music’s better bands. Suffocation made Effigy of The Forgotten just right, an excellent death metal debut with some minor things the band could improve on, which they ultimately take to the next level with Pierced from Within. Until then though, why not take a big bite of Effigy of the Forgotten?
The make or break feature of Death Metal is diversity. Is the album diverse enough to survive as an entire album, or is it just too long or too repetitive to live on? Luckily, Suffocation came up with a somewhat unique route. Most bands of the genre’s around Suffocation either dragged out their songs in a pretentious bore from time to time when they couldn’t keep the listener (Death), or were just way too repetitive and bland to last, even with short songs (Cannibal Corpse), but Suffocation managed to make their songs a manageable length, while containing enough diverse songwriting techniques and structure changes to keep the songs interesting and to make an album worthwhile listening. Another thing about Suffocation that kept the fans rather happy while managing to impress those unimpressed with the Death Metal genre before was the instrumentation. Be it the Slayer-esqe soloing, the somewhat thrash/speed metal-inspired technical riffing, the chug heavy breakdowns, or Mike Smith’s profound and interesting version of the regular old blast beat, each band member had something different to offer the group. Even vocalist Frank Mullen, with incredibly low growl and bark, managed to make a name for himself by standardizing his form of growling in the world of death metal.
“Liege of Invertacity” starts Effigy on a great first foot, as it shows some of the height of Mike Smith’s amazing drumming chops in the breakdown with a mixture of cymbal and blast beat mastery, and a rather wacky song structure that keeps the listener thoroughly tuned in throughout. Every other song tries its hand in topping this death metal masterpiece, and it’s a case of some songs do and some don’t. The title track begins with a grooving and driving bass line, which leads right into some extraordinary tech death riffing, but some of the second half of the album just don’t seem to match up to the magnificent beginning.
From this record onward, Suffocation kept proving that they are a rather excellent band. However, problems are arising nowadays, many bands are now disgracing their name by making a rather poor version of Suffocation records. Most of the tech death scene, if they aren’t stealing form Atheist or Death, they’re probably stealing from Suffocation, except making much weaker, with boring copy cat riffs, uninteresting structure mimics, and breakdowns in the form of “diet chug”. Instead of giving in and listening to these weak impostor, listen to Effigy of The Forgotten, and pretend they don’t really exist as you air chug your way through another breakdown.

FINALLY, a review for this, albeit a little short.
Great album, one of Suffocation's, and brutal death metal's, best.

Yeah this really needed a review, and while it isn't the best I've written, I feel I've done this album justice. This Message Edited On 11.07.08

Digging: Earth - Earth 2 | | | Even in a genre that is not my thing Maxy Boy, this was a really good review... Until it just ended. Just one paragraph on maybe a highlight track or two would have topped it off nicely... Plus, at the same time, it could have proven that the band aren't the same as every other in the genre.

This should end in a question mark.

*space between interested_(Death)
if they aren’t stealing form Atheist or Death,
I would change Death to maybe a band like Gorguts, seeing as Death was a little more melo-death orientated.
and breakdowns in the form of “diet chug”.
Nice line!!!!
Excellent review. Maybe just add another paragraph of info on their low end or the amazing guitar riffs on this album. Then you will have done this album justice.

longest sentence ever man, use some punctuation and cut this down a bit.
and there are some very akward sentences in this man, just go over it again. Read it to yourself out loud and try and get a better feel for what you're going for.

| | | haven't heard enough of death to say they're boring, but they're not the most intense music i've ever heard either.

nah later death is boring You gave 3 of their last 4 albums a 4...
haven't heard enough of death to say they're boring, but they're not the most intense music i've ever heard either. Well, yeah. Early Death is more death metal, later death is more progressive.

I feel their EP before this was better. "Pierced From Within" is still my best Suffocation album though.
Digging: Hypocrisy - A Taste Of Extreme Divinity | | | yeah pierced from within is better than this, but this is still an amazing record.
