There is a ska one here. A ska one in the Punk thread and also a Streetlight/Catch22/OtherTomasProjects in the Punk thread. Take your pick. The isn't much of a difference between the two ska ones but the one in the punk forum appeals to punk goers more, I guess.
On another note, anyone get any good ska gifts. I didn't. |
From the Sweboy to the ska thread, a very merry Christmas. Here's early Bob Marley and the Wailers doing "White Christmas". Pick it up, but don't tell the man ¬_¬: hxxp://megaupload.com/?d=71YPRD07

My mum made me a checkered duvet cover
Last year she sewed me a single duvet cover This year a double duvet cover cus I have a double bed now Frikkin awesome |
I'm getting me some Mighty Mighty Bosstones today, first time experience with that band.
Weren't they one of the first 3rd wave bands? |
Which album are you getting?
|
Let's face it.
|
Yeah they were one of the first. 1985 if I'm not mistaken.
|
They were the first, unless you count the Toasters as third wave.
|
I'd say The Toasters are third wave. They just don't have that common ska-punk sound that most third wave bands have.
|
I had no clue The Toasters were that old???
|
What did you guys think about ska for 2006?
I thought it was a pretty average year. This next one should be pretty good though. |
I had no clue The Toasters were that old???
They formed in 1983. |
They formed in 1983.
Wow, did not know, thank you! :)
What did you guys think about ska for 2006? I thought it was a pretty average year. This next one should be pretty good though.
yep I agree, average year. 2007 is looking pretty good though I think. Especially with Streetlight and Botar, Mad Caddies and The Toasters. Was the last Flatliners release in 2006 or 2005? |

But BTMI and ASOB both had amazing albums in 2006. Ruff Guide, Red Eyed Soul, The Rot Stops Here. The Johnstones and the King Blues and the Slackers and Fishbone. All great releases. |
2006 was an amazing ska year. For me anyhow. Couldn't have been any better. Let's see if 2007 can match it.
|
Jeff Rosenstock dominated 2006. As 2007 has begun, ska fans all over the world ask the same question: Can he repeat the feat or will he reap defeat? And this time, he is up against the mightiest of foes... Behold, the clash of the titans:
ROSENSTOCK VS. KALNOKY Let's get ready to ruuuuuuuuuuu.... ...uuuuuuumble! (In other words, yeah it's gonna be great.) |
Kalnoky skal nok vinde
|
ROSENSTOCK VS. KALNOKY
Thanks Swe, it's a good question. Both should have albums coming out next year, but let's look what they've done in the past. Rosenstock is getting a lot of attention for providing BTMI albums for free, but let's not forget that Kalnoky pioneered that technique with BOTAR's ep. Let's look at the matchup. Though Kalnoky's works have been popular for longer, Rosenstock has far more experience. He's toured more often, recorded more songs and struggled longer to get where he is. He's released 4 albums since Kalnoky released Everything Goes Numb. Kalnoky wasn't ready for his early success, and spent 3 years away from music before coming back with A Call To Arms. And while he has spent the past few years touring, he isn't half the front man Rosenstock is. Both work well with other bands. Kalnoky worked with members of Catch 22 and One Cool Guy on Everything Goes Numb and worked with over 15 musicians on A Call To Arms. Rosenstock has worked with members of bands like Big D and the Kids Table and the High School Football Heroes. Kalnoky, however, is a much stricter songwriter and little of the other musicians personality comes through, resulting in a more consistent album. Rosenstock's music reflects more of the collaborating musicians, and his albums vary widely in sound and feel. Both are also excellent musicians. Both are capable of writing every part of a song, from the drums to the lyrics. Both are pretty weak vocalists. Rosenstock's strength is in using a lot of electronic sounds, while Kalnoky's strength is in writing driving, multi-part horn lines. Where Rosenstock really shines is his interaction with the audience. He is one of the most entertaining front-men of our time and he's just as interesting online. He maintains three websites and updates with regularity. He tries to get the fans involved in every aspect of his band, from promotions to playing with him live. Kalnoky's online presence is limited to what the fans find out from him at shows or in interviews. When it comes down to it, Rosenstock wants it more. Kalnoky has had the #1 spot for too long, and it's made him soft. He's been too comfortable relying on Everything Goes Numb, Nirvana and Suicide Machines covers, and Streetlgiht/Catch 22 mashups. |
so ska has prevailed once again. The only ska band at probably the biggest battle of the bands of the local scene, The LeVar BurTones, won the final round. They beat out like 14 metal and hardcore bands, cause apparently those are the only good enough bands around here to make the finals.
I could tell some of the br00tal metul kids and hardcore kids were disappointed but they didnt see the BurTones play, it was easily the best of the night. I go to all their shows so i paid 8 bucks only to see them. http://www.myspace.com/thelevarburtones |
yeah an album every 4 years is disappointing even if they have all been great. Jeff writes a lot of new music that he cant help to experiment in different directions.

I just ordered The Johnstones - Word is Bond, The Flatliners - Destroy To Create and Babybom - Babyboom.
I tried to order the Littlest Man Band - Better Book Ends, but it was out of stock. Does anybody have lyrics for the Johnstones - Sunny Days? |
Aren't The Flatliners soon releasing something new?
I really need some! |
The music venue I used to go to burnt down Saturday morning. :( Sucks when a vital part of the local music scene is lost, but everyone has good spirits on benefit shows and to rebuild in the future.
|
Awesome. In the meantime squat someplace and start putting on shows of your own ;)
They played Common Rider at the club I went to last night. BOSH. It was just me + 2 other guys dancing around like twats singing so loud. They were both wasted ..... I had no excuse. I just like dancing around like a twat |
This poor thread.
|
Is anyone else going to the Mad Caddies show on March 1st? I am going to be skankin' like crazy!
|
I hear that they are just about to release a new album?
I saw them last summer, really good show. Mad Caddies has one of the best horn sections in ska! |
Skavoovie and the Epitones know how to play ska.
|
The Mad Caddies are opening for Pepper soon. Why Pepper gets to headline boggles my mind.
