They've hardly got groove though.

I'm currently really really really really pissed... I've spend like the last week trying to find somewhere to buy some My Dad Is Big cds... I can't even find a freaking list of the cds they released... I fail at everything... Over the past couple of weeks i've been hard at work... I noticed only about half of the albums on my iTunes were complete so i've been working hard to get all the complete cds on my iTunes... I have everything but the My Dad Is Big cd... I'm sorta OCD when it comes to this stuff so its really starting to piss me off...

Kithkin 03-02-2006 12:41 AM

Hey, I just started watching the Norm Macdonald Show

The intro is by Doug and the Slugs. That's awesome.

Kithkin 03-03-2006 01:18 AM

The Rick Johnson Rock and Roll Machine is a side project of the bassist from Mustard Plug.

I don't really like Mustard Plug. They're fun and all, but their music is pretty bland. That's why it's odd that Rick Johnson's music is so good. Why isn't he writing all the music for Mustard Plug, cause then it wouldn't just be generic ska...

Anyway, he played with Bomb the Music Industry... I don't know if it was the fact that Rick isn't a singer and he was on tour for 2 and a half weeks, but he couldn't sing at all (compared even to Jeff from BTMI/ASOB).

It was an interesting set. They played together and played each other's songs and were really quite good together, but I'd rather see Bomb the Music Industry with a whole band like he usually does.

The most interesting this was this guy who opened for him. He played Randy-esq punk rock and roll as a one man band. That's not the interesting thing. He played guitar, drums, keyboard and bass at the same time. While singing. It was ridiculous.

He played the Bass with one foot. A bass and snare drum with his other foot.

Kithkin 03-03-2006 01:34 AM

Also, coolest cd packaging ever:

skavid 03-04-2006 05:05 PM
So i hear The Aquabats, Streetlight, Whole Wheat Bread, and some other bands are going on tour?
Yeah, apparently in May-June or something. I am definitely psyched for this. No dates as of yet.

skankinbassplayer 03-05-2006 09:59 AM

Does anybody know the areas that they wll be touring in?

Catchthe22 03-05-2006 11:53 AM

Streetlight does mostly east coast and Aquabats does mostly west; it should be interesting to see what they do. Im thinking they will do a little of everything.

Catchthe22 03-06-2006 06:24 PM

From the confirmed locations thus far looks like west coast. Can check out the aquabat website for details.

Dude you really don't know your ska well enough to be posting stuff like that if that's truly what you think. The variety of ska bands for what i interpretted to be a guide for someone new to ska was fairly limited, though it would set them off on their way to learning about other bands fairly quickly.
What i'm concerned with here is the flippant dismissal of choking victim. I'm not disputing the fact that a lot of choking vicim songs are appallingly recorded and i respect your right to an opinion, but i think you've missed something when listening to them, perhaps not heard enough of the right songs. I get the impression that you have the wrong approach to music, most of the bands you mentioned have a lot of well polished material, which i think is why you've perhaps missed the talent behind choking victim, there's a mentality there only be understood fully by listening to the message they're trying to get accross, it's a lot easier if you've been through that kind of pain yourself, though i'll let that can that go as it is maybe too punk for you to understand.

Stop taking your cues from 21 dead monkeys!! it's not on at all! it is just plain stealing!!! and anyway there are better ska resources on the net than a badly drawn nn2s rip off!

no disrespect to 21 dead monkeys, i was just trying to make a point.

There's something wrong with pretty much everything you posted so i don't have time to go through it all,but i think it's safe to say that you're a moron and your opinion on music will only ever be valued by morons until you learn some sense! ska isn't about horns and trumpets, it's a spirit of music and until you understand that you'll never learn anything.
Good luck acquiring some taste and try not to make an arse out of yourself on the internet again until then.

french 03-10-2006 10:22 AM

sorry that was meant 2 b 4 kithkin it got added late for some reason

I gotta say, you are an incredibly intolerant and arrogant asshole. And you're not gonna last long if you insult a moderator in your first post, completely unprovoked. Thank God for that though.

Kithkin 03-10-2006 01:23 PM
stuff
I said they may have written the best song ever. The reason why I dismiss most of their songs is because Crack Rock Steady is well recorded, the singing isn't abysmal and it's actually a ska song.

I don't know much about Choking Victim other than they did a lot of crack and squatted. If I could understand what they were singing on most of their tracks, I might know a little more. If recording quality kept me from listening to bands I wouldn't listen to Operation Ivy or Chris Murray.
Stop taking your cues from 21 dead monkeys!! it's not on at all! it is just plain stealing!!! and anyway there are better ska resources on the net than a badly drawn nn2s rip off!
I don't take any cues from 21DM. I love her art and she recommends good bands, but in most cases they aren't new to me.

says the kid who typed this: "2 b 4"

What is this ska spirit you talk about? Please educate me to how Choking Victim has anything to do with the Ska spirit. How are stealing and smoking crack and suicided relate to that unified spirit that originated in Jamaica a half century ago?

I'm going to assume you only read the first page and thus missed these two posts:

Black Ink 03-10-2006 02:31 PM

So I saw the Planet Smashers last week and got to talk to Matt their guitar player/singer. He's a really cool guy and he was out selling t-shirts before and after the show. Really down to earth and cool and their peformance was great.

Next year the school radio station is expected to have a ton of money (the music director shot out $30K, but I doubt that much) and we're hoping to put on a concert series of we can find a sponser. Planet Smashers are definitly a band we're thinking of booking.

Catchthe22 03-10-2006 03:05 PM

Choking Victim is punk/ska. Not ska/punk(in my opinion). They sing about topics associated with the punk genre and sound the part. They dont really hold the "mentality" of ska. They hold more of a "mentality" of punk. Its not always fair to label, but you cant get your knickers in a twist just because someone isnt on the same level as yours on a particular band. As a casual listener of Choking Victim, I think they are okay. But it is unfair to not allow someone to have bias, even if it is in a guide. People can usually decipher their own idea of the band even if he doesnt like them. :chug:

Jessizzle 03-10-2006 03:44 PM

21 dead monkeys has a guy with " The Donuts" on his shirt, I suggest you all check them out, theyre amazing. The girl ( i forget her name) Came to our ska fest, and crashed at my friends house ( mike also on the comic) for a while.

Kithkin 03-10-2006 04:09 PM

Hey Catchthe22, I haven't listened to those bands yet, but I've got them in my log manager

If you like Catch 22, then you'll like Streetlight Manifesto.

skankinbassplayer 03-12-2006 11:01 AM

According to The Aquabats official site. They will be touring mostly in the west (sucks for people like me in the east). Though they did say that, that is not the entire list of shows so hopefully they will come towards the east. I only remember them coming to florida once since I have been listening to their music.

sketchyjoe 03-12-2006 12:40 PM

Ska Cubano are playing the Jazz Cafe in the summer. I might go see them. It's quite expensive but the last time I saw them was one of the best gigs I've ever seen.

the-UK-ska-scene 03-12-2006 03:26 PM

Ohhhh fit when are they playing? Nothing like a bit o'ska in the summer. I saw Pama International the other day at Cargo, was sweet. They were supporting Mad Professor but we couldn't stick around for him. Was some mint dub/ska DJs playing between bands though. & Pama did that King Django cover they always do....Who's going to see Django in 2 weeks at Underworld? I'm well excited!

Bloody AMAZING gigs coming up, it's truly gig season again, I'm gonna be on the breadline...
Youngblood Brass Band
Arrogant Sons Of Bitches
The Filaments/Deadline
King Django/Babar Luck
Planet Smashers/Captain Everything!/Kenisia/Random Hand/Catch-It Kebabs
Nekromantix
Slackers
A Billion Ernies/The Junglists
Sonic Boom Six/Random Heroes
Bouncing Souls
Suicide Bid/Kebabs etc.
Rx Bandits
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes
The Beat/The Big
Smoke Like A Fish/Splitters/Skylar/Duff Muffin/Kebabs
Toasters/Skaface/The Scrub/The King Blues
Suicide Machines

I'm seriously dead excited :D

sketchyjoe 03-12-2006 04:09 PM

Ska Cubano are playing 2nd June. Did you go to Gogol Bordello on Friday?

I'm definitely going to The Bouncing Souls, The Filaments/Deadline and Against Me! I'm probably going to Reverend Horton Heat, The Slackers, Latterman, The Toasters and The Grabass Charlestons.

Catchthe22 03-12-2006 06:32 PM

Suicide Machines are coming to my little town at the end of April. Great small venue that can only hold 120 people and i already got my ticket :) . Saw them a couple years ago and they put on an amazing show, even if you arnt a huge fan.
