So yeah, we had to do a project on a subculture or counterculture in Sociology and I picked Rude Boys.:) Mine was pretty good, I got an A. And everyone was all like "WTF are Rude Boys??!1!!"

sketchyjoe 10-02-2006 05:15 AM

Adequate 7's last London gig on Saturday was pretty epic.

JonM 10-02-2006 11:49 AM

The Slackers = the truth.

It's the best job of playing ska music that white people have ever done.

the-UK-ska-scene 10-03-2006 11:40 AM

I got to see both Adequate Seven's last London show AND Slackers on Saturday night, good evening's entertainment. It was too hot to dance for the whole set of Slackers, though, which was a mighty shame!

wilford 10-03-2006 07:33 PM

"The movement was sparked by the release - and instant success - of Gangsters, the debut single by The Special AKA (later simply The Specials) in the summer of 1979. The multi-racial septet from Coventry put the single out on their own 2-Tone label, complete with trademark chequered black and white sleeves and rude boy (and girl) logos, and changed the course of British popular ska music. Well, for a couple of years at least."

"It's a time fondly remembered by anyone who enjoyed the vibrant ska music, and especially Coventrians, whose youngsters propelled the city into the media spotlight not only for being home to the nation's most popular sounds and bands, but for taking the lead in the fight against the racial tension that was building in a country gripped by economic recession."

'2-Tone is one of the best stories to come out of Coventry, full stop,' says Bob Eaton, current director of the city's Belgrade Theatre. 'When I first came to Coventry it was one of the few things I knew about the place - the 2-Tone movement, label and bands that had come out of the city.'

Was that a smart bot? Cus that's quite incredible

I'm so impressed I'm not going to delete the finance links. That bot deserves it.

Txus 10-06-2006 04:12 PM

Hey guys :)

I've been listening to quite a lot of Ska lately, it's not my type of music or at least I thought so....but I'm enjoying it as for late. I only have the discography or almost the discopgraphies of Streetlight Manifesto, Catch 22, RX Bandits and Goldfinger but that's about it. I was wondering if someone would like to send me some more essential Ska albums via email please. I will give an E-Cookie to whoever takes the time to do this. No Rapidshare links please :)

Thanks a lot.

The email is: Txus.mx (at) Gmail.com

TAND 10-22-2006 08:42 PM

go pick up just some ska box sets. older stuff is better.

the-UK-ska-scene 10-31-2006 08:29 AM

Woah this had nearly dropped onto the second page!
So I'm gonna start a discussion about best ska album of 2006.
Shortlist for me so far is:
The King Blues - Under The Fog
Skylar - S/T Re-release
Sonic Boom Six - The Ruff Guide To Genre Terrorism
Babyboom - EP (not an album but whatever)
The Aggrolites - S/T (everyone hates it but it's got some choons!)

Also these will probably be in there when they're released (going on tracks I've already heard from them):
Suicide Bid - The Rot Stops Here
Catch-It Kebabs - Return Of The Kebabulance
and I haven't heard The BiG's album but I reckon I'll like it
haven't heard Slackers new one either but it's not gonna be bad! Live stuff's ace

Honourable mentions: Pama International, Westbound Train, woulda liked a bit of those over summer but I only just heard them now!

Drum Phil 10-31-2006 08:56 AM

I saw Sonic Boom 6 with Spunge a couple of weeks back in teesside.

Apocalyptic Raids 10-31-2006 09:03 AM

I saw a couple of sweet Ska bands on the weekend.

Catchthe22 10-31-2006 11:38 AM

Big D and the Kids Table have an album sampler track on their myspace for their new album that comes out January 2007.

Henrik 11-01-2006 09:38 AM

Are they going to play ska-punk again?
I rushed out and bought their rare dub ep, but to be honest I was very disappointed.

Catchthe22 11-01-2006 07:52 PM

Yeah i heard some songs off that ep and it kind of blew. The sampler shows some stuff similar of that of How it goes and Good Luck but I have a feeling it wont be as good, but decent none the less.

TAND 11-01-2006 10:26 PM

God, those are two amazing albums... How It Goes and Good Luck... I can listen to them nonstop.

Catchthe22 11-02-2006 03:04 PM

Yes, very true. Latley, I can't get enough of that song Chicago.

No albums shine out to me for ska this year. I havent really listened to those bands much that you mentioned. Catch 22's was pretty good, Rx Bandits was good and Bomb The Music Industry was good even though it was my first exposure to him.

Kithkin 11-03-2006 10:35 AM
Only the drums and bass were recorded live. The vocals and horns were recorded over that. It sounds great.

My short list has:

ASOB - Three Cheers for Dissapointment
SB6 - The Ruff Guide to Genre Terrorism

Because I can't remember any other albums that came out this year...

BTMI doesn't make it on because there's no point in having two albums by Jeff on the list and 3CfD is better than GCW.

Eps

Babyboom - ep
High School Football Heroes - We've Fooled Around Long Enough
Suburban Legends - Dance Like Nobody's Watching

The Johnstones and Suicide Bid will probably be on that list too. Did Skylar really come out this year?

Big D always release strange eps. They usually aren't very good.

Catchthe22 11-03-2006 01:03 PM

I just checked out the Suburban Legend's EP on myspace and those are pretty damn good. Like Franz Ferdinand meets Reel Big Fish.

pedro durruti 11-05-2006 01:22 AM

I have a confession, I left 20 minutes into a Toaster's set..

Isn't it funny how ska has still yet to be featured in any forum yet, atl least by name?

Kithkin 11-05-2006 05:47 AM

The only honorable way to leave a Toasters set 20 minutes in involves bouncers, shots, and a bill you can't pay.

the-UK-ska-scene 11-05-2006 09:50 AM
Did Skylar really come out this year?
No it came out last year, well it was recorded aaages ago. But it was re-released this year on Do The Dog records (it was self-released before)

ps Got the new Suicide Bid yesterday. Ohhh, yes.

Tyr 11-05-2006 11:34 AM

So, I've recently discovered The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and I would like some recommendations to similar bands. Thanks.

Oh, and something like Sublime would be nice, too.

Kithkin 11-06-2006 02:15 AM

Sublime:

Slightly Stoopid
Fugazish
Chris Murray
Jack Johnson
Jaya the Cat
The Hippos
Bedouin Soundclash

Mighty Mighty Bosstones:

Suicide Machines
Streetlight Manifesto
The Toasters
Sonic Boom Six
Operation Ivy
Filibuster
King Apparatus
Fishbone

Apollyon 11-06-2006 04:19 AM

That list is missing Arthur Kay & The Originals

sweboy 11-06-2006 09:03 AM

Defenitely check out Slightly Stoopid for Sublime vibes. Let me also add Long Beach Dub Allstars to the list. They're basically the Sublime crew without Bradley. You'd think it'd suck, since it was all about Brad the man, but they have some nice tunes.

Tyr 11-06-2006 02:05 PM

Thanks, guys. I've already got Everything Goes Numb by Streetlight Manifesto, which I love. Operation Ivy didn't appeal that much to me when I heard them some time ago, but I'll be sure to check out the other bands.

Kithkin 11-06-2006 10:26 PM

Eh, Long Beach Dub All-stars did absolutley nothing for me.

sweboy 11-07-2006 04:15 PM

Well they're not really one of my favorite bands either, but they have some decent songs. But of course they can't come close the greatness of Bradley.

Henrik 11-08-2006 12:25 PM

Half of Bradleys songs are really good.
The rest half is meh.

Kithkin 11-08-2006 10:58 PM

Yeah, but the good part of the good songs were the Vocals and the Guitar. The bass and drums were never anything more than competent.

TAND 11-09-2006 01:41 PM
Yeah, but the good part of the good songs were the Vocals and the Guitar. The bass and drums were never anything more than competent.
The bass always complimented his guitar lines though. They were never too exagerrated for the song.

Henrik 11-09-2006 02:05 PM

The bass was alright I guess. A bit more skilled drumming could have been nice.
I really like the first half of the s/t cd. After Seed most of the songs are below average.

TAND 11-09-2006 03:13 PM

True. I usually don't listen to their whole cd at a time...
The bass always complimented his guitar lines though. They were never too exagerrated for the song.
That's pretty much how I define competent.

Txus 11-09-2006 07:08 PM

I've been listening to A LOOOT of Goldfinger lately.

Tyr 11-09-2006 07:12 PM

Such a great band.

White Riot! 11-09-2006 07:22 PM

Mehhh third wave really isnt ska...

TAND 11-09-2006 11:32 PM

It's got its ska moments. I'm mostly into 3rd wave, but I love it all.

anyone got some good 1st wave ska?

beso negro 11-09-2006 11:57 PM
Sublime:

Slightly Stoopid
Fugazish

Alright I'm downloading some of this.

The best part of Sublime was Bradley's voice. Hopefully these bands have some solid vocals as well.
