the-UK-ska-scene 07-21-2006 04:29 PM

The Boom err released their new album....Err I think on the 3rd of July. I remember I was at a Babyboom show on the 2nd July and they were pre-selling them. Hey I did an interview with Barney the other day, I might get round to uploading some mp3s of that onto here. It's all transcribed and will be in the next issue of PunkerMentality zine. I bought the new Boom album last Saturday, but haven't got round to listening to it yet!

Kithkin 07-21-2006 10:14 PM

What is Babyboom. Do they have something to do with SB6?

The new album is good. It isn't quite as perfect as sounds to consume, but I can't not love them.

the-UK-ska-scene 07-22-2006 04:39 PM

I think I may prefer the new album. Nah maybe I'm just being crazy. It's good though!

Babyboom is an acoustic side project of Sonic Boom Six, with exactly the same members. They've been covering Northern Skies as part of their set lately. I love Babyboom, I prefer them over Sonic Boom Six (but big Boom are awesome too!).

"Babyboom started… obviously it started as a side project of Sonic Boom Six. It started because Ben and Laila wanted to do some acoustic sets, and this is when Ben still played the saxophone but Ben’s a songwriter, and Ben wrote a few songs he wanted him and Laila to go do some acoustic sets at pubs and bars etc."
"Laila thought of the name Babyboom so it seemed appropriate to distinguish between acoustic Sonic Boom Six and electric Sonic Boom Six."
-ugly unedited interview, but yeah that's what Babyboom basically is in Barney's own words.

Here's their stuff for your listening pleasure, although you should really buy it. Please.

Kithkin 07-22-2006 08:07 PM

I'll put it on the list of cds to buy when I get a real job.

Meaning, every cd in my ska folder that is a) still in print and b) I've listened to more than 4 times.

I sent out like 7 resumes this week. More going out this week. I had an interview on Friday to be a copy editor.
I'll put it on the list of cds to buy when I get a real job.
I have the same list... Mine is soo long cause i don't like having one song from a cd, i need the entire cd cause i don't like the way it looks in itunes...

Catchthe22 07-23-2006 05:59 PM

I know what you mean.

-Superman- 07-28-2006 12:45 PM

The other day i saw Catch 22, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Big D (with some other bands) and it was amazing... I thought RBF and Streetlight were better but it was still amazing...

I also just found out that the Toasters, Big D, and the Pietasters are playing a Halloween show in my area :D

Kithkin 07-29-2006 12:44 AM

Skalloween is the best holiday.

Somebody changed the title of this thread...

the-UK-ska-scene 07-30-2006 04:12 PM

I was just about to comment on that.
I've had a well nice weekend.
Good Clean Fun/The Steal/Mike Park/Chief on Friday
Lightyear/The King Blues/Adequate Seven/The Steal/Grown At Home yesterday
The King Blues today

I wish I could go to the King Blues/Mike Park show at Brighton tomorrow, but it's a mission, and I have work. Boo.

That sounds like a blast, lucky you...

Question, i know i may have brought this up a long time ago, but does anyone know anything about My Dad Is Big besides the fact they broke up? Like how many people were in the band and what not?

Jessizzle 08-02-2006 09:25 AM

as_seen_on_tv 08-10-2006 03:55 PM

I just saw the Streetlight/WWB/RBF/MXPX show, and the most memorable set to me was Reel Big Fish.I love their energy, you can see it go straight into the crowd when they start.I don't think they played very many new songs,I knew most of them.Streetlight was,of course, amazing. They mixed Point/Counterpoint and Keasbey Nights, which was cool because I've always thought about the correlation between the two songs.

By the way,Reel Big Fish play "Enter Sandman" anywhere else?

The reason they didn't play any new songs is cause most of the stuff they played is off of their new album which is a live album, and therefor the songs aren't new... RBF was incredible here, their energy as you said was amaing. Oh and they did play Enter Sandman here in DC... Streetlight also mixed some of their songs too...

Kithkin 08-12-2006 03:45 PM

The Bosstones used to cover Enter Sandman... I think.

-Superman- 08-12-2006 06:48 PM

Yes they did, and its only one of the best covers ever...

-Superman- 08-20-2006 11:04 AM

So uh... Anything new in the world of ska?

Catchthe22 08-20-2006 02:39 PM

Hmm you know that popular song 'Smile' by Lily Allen the british pop artist. It has a ska chord going on in it. And you know that Paris Hilton song 'Stars are Blind'? The offbeats are present. Ska is entering the pop scene but not in the best way for the genre. It is nice to hear offbeats on the radio but it is like feeding kids a magical gummy candy and not telling them the name. They will never find it again by themselves

sweboy 08-20-2006 04:05 PM

So I just ordered a Toots and the Maytals box set with 50+ songs for 129 SEK = 18 USD/14 EUR/9.5 GBP. That's my kind of number. My CD collection will surely enjoy some Toots lovin'.

It'd been better if it was 54.46.

That was a nice purchase. Toots and the Maytals are great.

the-UK-ska-scene 08-22-2006 06:09 AM

Sonic Boom Six just got added to the Reading/Leeds line-up, which brings the count of eminantly see-able bands up to LOTS. Well, lots more than the Carling fest usually has:

The King Blues, Send More Paramedics, Lightyear, Bouncing Souls, Bodycount, Gogol Bordello, Bedouin Soundclash, Goldie Lookin' Chain, Less Than Jake, Sonic Boom Six, Captain Everything!, Adequate Seven, Capdown, Against Me!, Flogging Molly, Millencolin, Anti-Flag, Rise Against, Reel Big Fish, Coheed & Cambria

Safe.

Kithkin 08-22-2006 09:25 AM

I hate you all the time.

the-UK-ska-scene 08-22-2006 10:02 AM

You make me  all the time. England looking more attractive now ayyyy? :p I don't get to see all those bands as I gotta work 3 8-hour shifts over the weekend :upset: dunno who I'm gonna be missing yet!

I'm packing for the fest as I'm heading off to London in about an hour, then to the campsite tomorrow...Eurgh camping. I am also listening to P.A.I.N. right now who everyone should listen to yeah.

Grohlthegreat 08-22-2006 10:27 AM

I'm in love with Reel Big Fish now. :)

MXicanDrummer 08-22-2006 11:48 AM

RBF's live album is the most amazing thing I've ever heard.

Edit: Reel Big Fish plays Enter Sandman?!

Ghostfire3 08-22-2006 03:28 PM

RBF are sooo bad. Their lyrics are terrible and I don't like their sound. What's worse is that kids these days think RBF is what defines ska. It's so sad.

Catchthe22 08-24-2006 10:53 AM

They have always been fun and are always about the ska.

-Superman- 08-26-2006 04:39 PM

At least you don't rub your amazing ska scene in my face as much as Jas does.

Yeah ("Pressure Drop- The Definitive Collection"). But they had some kind of special sale campaign going at the time, so it was cheaper than usual. It goes for 179 kr now, but that's still a nice price. They also have another double CD, "Essential Collection" for 159 kr.

Jas 08-30-2006 05:51 PM
At least you don't rub your amazing ska scene in my face as much as Jas does.
Mwahahaha.

I saw all the bands on my list except Bedouin Soundclash as I began work at 10.30 that night and they came on at 10.40! Hah gutted. But Barney from Sonic Boom Six gave me a pretty hefty shout out when they played Reading which made me feel very cool indeed

I just invested in that Mouthwash album, Kith, their new stuff is sounding immense too I saw them a couple times in the last couple weeks. It amazes me that you're listening to Workin Lunch, haha, semi local boys to me hardly anyone even around here has heard of them! I'm not too keen on them meself, I like their ska stuff but it's a bit few and far between.
