Howards Alias, Captain Everything! Adequate Seven, blah, blah, blah, 6 pounds
I know the dollar sucks, and that means probably like $120 to me now, but screw you and your stories where you're doing awsome things. |

;) You love it. £6 is about $10. I've got a bunch of Americans living in my halls (one from Wisconsin and one from Philadelphia in my kitchen) and the exchange rate is killing them. Everything is totally expensive compared with 'back home', apparently. It's easily true, I mean a night out here (London) costs a LOT of money. I suppose this isn't the best time to say I might be seeing Adequate 7 & Howards Alias again next week for £6.50 10 minutes away in Camden  ... Ok so I won't tell you that. |
streetlight in 3 hours:)
|
Who else has been to the Ska is Dead tour this year? I went on September 10th in Chicago. It was simply amazing. The only disapointment was the fact that The Toaster's trumpet player as well as organ player were no where in sight. They played amazingly just the same, but it was sort of a let down.
|
I'm going on monday. Should be pretty cool.
|
YOu people need to stop letting this drop to the second page.
2 things. Hey Jas, remember the Vicars who posted on Skascene? I finally got them a show at my college:) November 12th if anyone lives near central PA. Also www.myspace.com/bombtown New Jersey decent ska/reggae/punk I get a lot of random ska bands looking to add me for some reason on myspace. I add most of them for the hell of it, but this one is actually pretty good. |
Suicide Machines, Catch 22, The Flatliners, at the Kathedral, November 5, 05,
Sweet f'ucking show.. Kinda sucks its on a school night. |
So I was filling out a job ap for a cd store and it asked "name 3 artists in these genres" and had a list. When it got to reggae I went with "they did trad ska and anyone that's not a ska freak won't know the difference" :D So I put Toots & the Maytals (on the basis that their song is where the word reggae came from) and Laurel Aitken and Bob Marley. I can't name any reggae artists that didn't originally do trad anyway.

Awesome news about the Vicars, Kith, I keep seeing them plugged on some other website but I can't remember what one it is...
I just got back from seeing Adequate Seven & Howards Alias again - this time it cost me £8 on the door! Ouch! Luckily it only cost £1 to get the bus there. However even though the venue is only about a 20 minute bus journey from where I live, it was a mission to get back and it took us over 2 hours ... It was all fun, though. And I got Ad7's setlist, was very awesome. Had exactly the same spot as last time as well, so I took a couple more cool photos. Yeah. |
After looking over a few pages i was wondering a few things (please excuse me if i overlooked some post discussing what i'm about to inquire)...
Does anyone know where I can download some My Dad Is Big? I didnt hear about them till a few weeks ago and cant find any of their music anywhere. Do sites like amazon still sell their cds? This for the list on the first page (I dont know if they were mentioned anywhere else in this thread), what about the bands: Smoke Like A Fish & Streetlight Manifesto? |
WHEN'S THE NEXT SKA SHOW?? Guys, I need some new easily accessible ska bands that you can assume I haven't heard before (Trad, two tone mostly). I haven't been checking out many ska bands lately, and I'm lazy so I need your help.
I also heard about a band Sanddollars, anyone have an album of theirs?? |
I might be seeing Streetlight soon :D
|
what about the bands:
Smoke Like A Fish & Streetlight Manifesto?
Streetlight Manifesto are mentioned far too often both in this thread, and over on the punk board in their very own Catch22/Streetlight/BOTAR thread :thumb: I mention Smoke Like A Fish about every.....5 seconds. In this thread and in real life. I like you a lot already. I think I just threw up when I saw the new "updated thread" graphic things. They're so orange. I am kind of sad cus I just found out today that the Ordinary Boys date I was gonna go to (Bedouin Soundclash are supporting) has already sold out. But that's cool I guess, it was another £14 I can't really afford...... :upset: |
I think I just threw up when I saw the new "updated thread" graphic things. They're so orange.
They should be black and white, shouldn't they Jas? |
I cant find any My Dad Is Big or Smoke Like A Fish for sale, does anyone know where i can find some? Please exclude dothedog for the Smoke Like A Fish Cds cause my dad wont let me buy something in the UK, my mom might, but i'd like to try to keep it in the states...
|
They should be black and white, shouldn't they Jas?
Yes Peter, everything should always be black and white. -Superman-, dude, I don't know if/where you can get any My Dad Is Big stuff nowadays, aren't they split up now? However, there's a couple places you can get Smoke Like A Fish stuff. PunkerMentality has all of their albums for £7 each. It is in England, but it ships to all over the place and takes credit/debit cards or you can send money/cheque etc. and I know the guy personally and he's incredibly reliable and a real good bloke. Their second album is also available here, I don't know where this website is based, but all the stuff seems to be marked up in dollars! |
Yeah, but it says their form england...
Not exactly proffessional. And it's not listed in the bbb. If your dad won't let you order from the uk because he doesn't trust overseas shipping, well... he shouldn't. punkermentality is far more reliable than that spitshine catalogue. |
I don't know if/where you can get any My Dad Is Big stuff nowadays, aren't they split up now?
Yes they did split up, but i dont understand why their cds still wouldnt be for sale... I just need to find somebody that has their cds and have them burn me a copy... |
I'm Jamming with two dudes on Friday. They're both ska kids.
I should probably learn how to play some ska on bass... Superman - It depends on what kind of band they are and what label they were on. Some bands, like Op Ivy, are sold long after they break up because their records keep selling. But if a band doesn't have an album that sells, then there isn't much reason for a label to keep printing the cd, making it much harder to find. I mean, My Dad is Big isn't even keeping their website around. All I can find is a song on a "Know Your Skalphabelt" comp. http://www.interpunk.com/item.cfm?Item=56357& http://punkermentality.com/moreinfo.php?id=3005&PHPSESSID=385b4f767d9ad8a08c75f19c02f61b43 If you know the album title, you'll have more luck. |
I mean, My Dad is Big isn't even keeping their website around.
Its a shame... They were a great ska band... |
There need to be more bands like The Slackers. Fuck! I love them
|
Are there any screamo-ska bands?
|
I hope not...

Haha.. I am pretty sure there's one over here. Seen them twice, they have a COUPLE songs that are good, and had some fun horn lines, but otherwise they suck.
http://www.purevolume.com/thewhistlepigs |
Maybe I misread, but I saw no mention of The Specials or Bad Manners? What type of ska list is this?
|
Our ska list. And yes, we do know who they are.
Are there any screamo-ska bands?
Check out The Too Toos, it's ages since I listened to them and they're not exactly screamo-ska but they might be slightly what you're looking for. |
If you read the whole thing, you'll see mention of them.
But it clearly states in the beginning that this is mostly a third wave ska list. Though it hasn't been updated in a while because I'm not a very reliable person. Anyway, last night I jammed with a drummer and a guitarist. Well, that could have gone better, I assume. But first practice is more about meeting each other htan anything else. Anyway, later that night I ran across a guy I knew who was with some friends, told him I had jammed with some kids playing ska and one of the other guys lights up. Turns out they were all going back to one of their rooms to jam. So I went with them and sort of recruited the trumpet player. We're learning the Planet Smashers - Explosive and The Specials/Big D - Little Bitch for next week. |
Excellent man. My only problem is the lack of Streetlight Manifesto, I know this has been mentioned. But they are, in my opinion, the best ska band there has been. And Ryan Dallas Cook RIP, hopefully we can find the bastard that killed him.
