3rd wave = Ska-punk, Ska-core etc
right, but there's a lot of versions of 3rd wave. 3rd wave is kinda where it just ballooned and blended with everything. I mean, there's ska-core, ska-punk, punk-ska (there is a difference, ska-punk is more punk with horns and punk-ska is more ska but faster and a little louder....notice which is the noun and which the modifier), ska-pop (like No Doubt around the Rocksteady cd), etc.

sketchyjoe 07-25-2005 02:37 PM

Ska-punk is ska and punk to varying degrees. Punk with horns is just punk.

maco 07-25-2005 02:52 PM

hahaha i just read your avatar!!

I usually switch the order to define which one is the more prominant part of the music.
Two-tone is second wave.

MMB are 3rd wave.
i no i was a little drunk when i posted srry. here geos

1st wave-the skatalites
2nd wave-the specials or madness.
3rd wave- the toasters

two tone continued on into the 3rd wave but died out after the toasters, who helped spark the 3rd wave movement. not all of the 2nd wave was 2 tone, but most was. :thumb:

The Toasters weren't on two-tone but they're definitely more a part of the 2nd wave than the 3rd wave although they were a big influence on the 3rd wave.

they're the bridge between them, essentially

When I think of it, the waves really represent more location than time or music. The first wave made ska popular in Jamaica, the second made it popular in Britain, the third made it popular in America. The Toasters I believe were very important in making ska popular in America, and like Two-Tone, their label Moon Ska has had many of the best American ska bands. So I would agree with putting them in the third wave. Maybe thats just me.

sketchyjoe 07-27-2005 06:38 PM

They were more of a pre-cursor to the third wave. What defined the third-wave (at least initially) was the combination of punk and ska by bands like Operation Ivy and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

The ear says they're two-tone

That really is a cool shirt. I'd wear it.

scroogey 07-28-2005 04:42 AM

ive heard that the aquabats are coming to UK soon while on their european tour! well looking forward to that! anyone heard any dates though? and whats up with their horn section- they still about?

the-UK-ska-scene 07-28-2005 04:47 AM

scroogey, yes Aquabats are touring I believe during October they will be here (although I have no dates yet), however I assume they are going to play some quite small venues as I know the promoter who is putting them on in my area, and he's looking to book them at a 200-300 capacity venue. I believe they still have their horns? I wouldn't be an expert, though, I'm not a huge fan of The Aquabats but I am really looking forward to their tour!

pedro durruti 07-28-2005 02:53 PM

I saw them a couple weeks ago and they still have one guy that plays a saxaphone

Now I don't have to feel guilty about not being able to make you that shirt :(

This will be much better then anything I could've made, though.

pedro durruti 07-29-2005 02:48 AM

I just saw a shoe commercial with that one guy from Jackass and they have two main types and one is called "Ska"

Kithkin 07-29-2005 02:54 AM

The radio station at work plays a lot of really bad ska. Like, commercial 80's synthpop ska.
I'm thinking of when I go back to school and if I have enough free time I might see if I can't get a second radio show that I can do that'll be nothing but ska music. Maybe snag a one hour time slot or something so it's not too much of a hassle. The FM station itself doesn't have all that great of a range but you can stream it online.
That's cool. How do you go about getting on the radio thing for a college? I know a lot of colleges have their own stations.

maco 07-31-2005 12:39 AM

But how did you get to be a member of the radio station? Is it like only for people that are communications majors or is it like how there's journalism clubs or what?

Kithkin 07-31-2005 04:28 AM

At our college you just sign up. You don't have to be a journalism major to write for the paper or a communications major to have a radio show or be on the school tv station.

And god is it apparent that you don't have to have any skill to do any of them.
