Yeh, I agree most ppl hear aquabats and RBF first, and most are then hooked. I'm talking about the ppl that firmly hate ska FROM listening to those two bands, but then they hear Streetlight, Catch, BotAR and change their view. I hope u can understand that, cause it does look kinda confusing
I understand. If people don't enjoy pop punk, and they hear band like Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake, they will automatically turn away from the entire ska genre. The reason why they hear those bands first though is simply because they're most popular, while the "better" ska bands hardly get any mention. Yet what is considered "better" ska is merely a matter of opinion. If people were exposed to several bands from the different waves, they would be more likely to enjoy ska. Unfortunatley this doesn't usually happen, and ska is overlooked.
Big ska bands aren't usually fun live. Mostly because they pack the house and there's no room to dance.
I'll agree with this. I went to an Aquabats concert this summer, and while the show was amazing, the place was backed and there was very little room to speak of, and The Aquabats are hardly the most popular band. Kids were simply jumping around and pushing each other, and those who really enjoyed the music had zero room to skank. On the other hand entirely, when I went to the Ska Is Dead Tour in September, there was a much smaller crowd, and the bands did a great job of helping the audience interact. Everyone was able to skank with plenty of room, and it was much more enjoyable.

Catch 22 is always fun live...

And i missed the apparent "best show ever" w/ the Aquabats...

And well honestly i've never seen a ska show where there isnt room to dance...

Yeh, Catch 22 is a very good band live, they even sing the Keasbey stuff pretty good even tho Tomas left.

SickBoy 11-04-2005 12:41 PM

im seeing the Selecter next week
i can tell youre all jealous

sweboy 11-04-2005 06:34 PM

So, people, what's the deal with Keasby Night 2 anyway? I heard that someone broke into their van and stole all their stuff, so I suppose that this would delay everything. And if I'm not mistaken, they're out on tour at the moment. But is there no information at all about the new album?

No one in punk believed me. BUT My friend said his friend found some leaked songs from keasbynights two.. I know nothing for fact.. Just there is claims that it has been leaked.
Oh so true.
Local Ontario ska is my favourite genre!
Word.

Also, General Rudie + tiny venue + even smaller crowd = best concert I have ever been to. There was tons of room to dance, and so the skankin' never ended. The One Night Band and local band the Donuts also played.

pedro durruti 11-04-2005 10:28 PM

I wish General Rudie would come to the US.

Kithkin 11-05-2005 01:21 AM

I wish US ska bands would tour the country.

Instead of keeping their "jobs"

the-UK-ska-scene 11-05-2005 07:27 AM
And well honestly i've never seen a ska show where there isnt room to dance...
You've never been to a Reel Big Fish show then? Well that's not true, they usually play quite large venues with room to dance at the back, but if you want to get within 40 feet of the stage you're in with the sardines.
I don't know if I like Howards Alias's new cd...
Beat Heart, Beat? I didn't like that one, or The Answer Is Never. It's the whole part of Rx Bandits and Workin Lunch that I can't really get - the 'progressive rock alternative' angle of things. I am still a huge fan of their first album, though. They played their last gig on Wednesday but it would have cost quite a bit to come down and see it, and cus I knew they'd only play a couple songs from Chameleon it wasn't really worth it. Apparently it was pretty epic though. Lot of my mates went, buggers.

Kith you need all of Skylar's CD, if you like the track(s) I sent you so far. What do you think of them? I could gmail you the rest if you like.

They played Specials in the pub last night, I was well happy, quite drunk & singing along.

ps I see Streetlight Manifesto in a week and a day. I'm seeing them 3 times again :upset:

Kithkin 11-05-2005 01:06 PM

The rest of Skylar would be awesome.

I really liked "The Answer is Never" and the Rx Bandits newest cd. If done well that combination can make some really good music. This cd just didn't do it as well. But I only listened to it once and not very hard.

Nice, I've only seen them once, and thats only because they never come down to AZ. They are a damn good band live aswell.

the new rxbandits cd kinda sucked compared to progress...im in love with that cd

Kithkin 11-06-2005 12:38 AM

I disagree. I like progress as a ska album, but it isn't something I would recommed to someone who didn't already have a background in ska.

The Resignation, on the other hand, is an album you can give to someone who likes rock (just about everybody) and say, "this is what you can do with ska."

"Overcome - The Recapitulation" is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. The way it builds, it's lyrics, the danceability. The best part about the song, from an introduction standpoint is that it follows 3 songs that no rock listner can deny are quality songs. The song arrangements remind me more of Propaghandi or a Wilhelm Scream than Reel Big Fish or Less than Jake.

the-UK-ska-scene 11-06-2005 09:47 AM

Hey guys I just sorted out a .tk for the skascene website, been too lazy to do it until now! The website hasn't been updated since it went down, I'll be buggered if I know how to update it at all...I didn't design the site and I'm crap at html. But check it out and please post on the forum or something, I changed the links on the main page so they will work to the forum. Cheers lads.
http://skascene.tk/

I also sorted out a .tk for my zine Scuffed Culture, as I had no money when domain renewal time came around and it's gonna lose it's domain real soon
http://scuffedculture.tk
so save that baby in your browser something interesting should be happening there soon! Well if I sort it out in the next couple of days (but it won't necessarily be up for the while)

Anyone going to the Xmas Ska Explosion at in Camden? I think someone said they were.
It's gonna be immense, line-up so far is:
THE TOASTERS
THE BIG
GOLDMASTERS ALL-STARS
THE SCRUB
CHIEF LIBIDO
BIG HAND

Also is anyone going to the show on the 18th December at Clapham Grand? I'm probably missing seeing The Beat so I can go. Skylar are playing that's why.
The line-up for that so far is:
Crack Howard
Not Shibby
3dbs Down
Phinius Gage
Kenisia
The Fat Cats
Fireapple Red
Mouthwash
Skylar
Pama International

& Kith I will sort you out with those mp3s when I get back to halls tonight

few_dollars_more 11-06-2005 07:38 PM

Kind of off-topic but does any1 know a good site with alot of ska tablature (for guitar). I've found some OK ones but most are for just RBF, LTJ and such.

-Superman- 11-06-2005 09:29 PM

OMG when i was in London, i went to Camden and i loved it soooo much... (you are talking about Camden in London right?)... So i've already decided that this summer im going to go see The Aquabats and Time Again when they stop by my area... Its soo far away, but im already really excited...

I heard a few songs by the Insyderz, and I must say, from the little bit that I heard, I enjoyed it. I'm in the process of creating a list of ska cds I'd like to purchase, and I was considering picking up one by them. Anyone have any suggestions on which cds I should buy? I'm always looking for new bands and such to listen to, so any suggestions are apprechiated.

Yeah sure you could do, you could post it on the forums? As I don't know how to post it on the website (sad but true)

Hey Toots & Maytals are playing on Saturday but it's like £30-£45 to go so I can't go :upset: & Skatalites are playing for 3 nights in a row 15 mins bus ride away from me but it's £25 a ticket so I can't go there either :upset:

I'll be the 6ft2 scruffy looking guy with a piss-poor excuse for a beard and floppy hair (unless I can be bothered to shave and get a haircut first) probably wearing a yellow DK Holiday in Cambodia shirt or a brown Bob Dylan shirt.

Cool is your brown Bob Dylan shirt the one with a Subterranean Homesick Blues video screenshot on the front of it? Cus if so I have the same one. I guess I'll be wearing either a black/white 'ska' t shirt or a yellow t shirt with the BOTAR guitar/wings stencilled onto the back, as those are the only shirts I seem to wear to gigs nowadays....

Kithkin 11-10-2005 08:19 PM

Streetlight Manifesto were robbed again:(

pedro durruti 11-10-2005 08:54 PM

Wow.. what's with the bad karma? Maybe Tomas is really a serial killer. A genius, sexy serial killer.

But seriously, this is ridiculous.

Kithkin 11-10-2005 11:42 PM

If you were a serial killer, being the leader of an underground ska band would be great cover. What detective would ever like brutal ritualistic slaying with Streetlight tour dates.

Anyone here ever heard of Patent Pending?

Check out their song Cheer Up Emo Kid at www.purevolume.com/patentpending

pedro durruti 11-12-2005 08:12 PM

Man this is a great local band. http://www.upritedub.com/

But they never play all ages shows! Just like every other trad band.

the-UK-ska-scene 11-14-2005 04:41 AM

Mahate. Streetlight were AMAZE. They played Here's To Life with the BOTAR intro (NICE), a cover iof Radiohead - Creep, and then they just played a similar set to last time but with a song or two off EGN they didn't play last time. Was too good mate.

EDIT: OH & Uncle Brian (ew) played a Billy Bragg cover (A New England) punk stylee fast, which made me respect them just a little bit. & it gave me a practice at singing along with all the words really fast before Streetlight came on.

Ahhh, Streetlight :)

Kithkin 11-14-2005 08:38 AM

Uncle Brian's still around?

Why do the best bands break up and the bad ones just keep keeping on.

sketchyjoe, yeah man I was SOAKED, I got out of the crowd and straightaway was freezing it was gross. I was right at the front in the middle, I don't know if you were anywhere round there. I ache so bad today.

& I went to bed 5am last night & got up at 10am, not fun.

Anyhow enough bitching, my pictures (not amazing quality, taken on phone)....

Kithkin 11-14-2005 08:35 PM

I hate it when ska bands don't tour with other ska bands.

Reel Big Fish is coming with Transistor and the Tossers. And while the Tossers should be fun, Transistor is pretty guitar work and talented singing...

Who wants that?

Last time they brought the Littlest Man Band and some other punk band the time before that they did bring the Suburban Legends and I can't thank them enough for that. But before that they brough Homegrown (freshman year, first show I ever paid for). The Toasters brought a melodic hardcore band. The last time I saw Streetlight it was with Whole Wheat Bread and Gym Class Heroes. The Pie Tasters never bring anything ska.

It isn't that surprising for Reel Big Fish though. They've been through here every year I've been here (4 and a half years) and this town has never had a ska band to open for them. I'm gonna try to change that.

pedro durruti 11-14-2005 10:21 PM

Heh, yeah. I think the only show I've been to with more than one ska band playing is Big D and Streetlight last year and Ska is Dead.
