Hey Leftover Jello are there any good bands in Seattle between August 6-8?

Leftover Jello 07-22-2005 03:21 PM

I don't know, I don't ussually plan that far ahead. But probably not.

Rasta Rocker 07-22-2005 06:08 PM

What are some good streelight manifesto songs?

Here's To Life
Point/Counterpoint
A Better Place, A Better Time

maco 07-22-2005 09:46 PM

Here's to Life is by the Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, but it is really good. The Big Sleep's really good too. I usually skip A Better Place, A Better Time because its so slow and all. I like it, but it's sort of a heavy subject matter I suppose. Point/Counterpoint is fun though. I turned it on for my friend and was singing it. My other friend sang the slower parts with me but dropped out when it was fast. The first-timer took the booklet and studied it for like 20 minutes while we listened to the rest of the cd, then told me to "put the fast one back on." He tried to sing along, but as soon as it got fast he threw the book down and went "I can't even read that fast!"

maco 07-22-2005 09:50 PM

Oh I bought 2 ska comps today for $8 each. One is all trad and the other is all Japanese.

Da' Ska Man 07-23-2005 03:34 AM

is fishbone considered 1st wave or two tone?

sketchyjoe 07-23-2005 06:22 AM

Neither.

Kithkin 07-23-2005 08:45 AM

Fishbone is WTF Ska

No. Tomas was in Catch 22 (which did Dear Sergio like you said), and then he left them. He formed BOTAR and did the remake of Dear Sergio along with the original Here's to life. Later, BOTAR was put on hold, and streetlight was started. BOTAR did the original

Try again. Botar came before Streetlight. A Call to Arms came out in 2002 and Everything Goes Numb was 2003 I think. Not sure on the years, but I know FOR SURE that A Call to Arms came first. The frontman is Tomas Kalnoky. He was in Gimp, then Catch 22, then started Botar, then did Streetlight while Botar was on hiatus, and now they're recording Streetlight and Botar stuff this summer.

maco 07-23-2005 04:55 PM

Anyone wanna YSI me some Botar? I've listened to them on turnuptheska.com before, but the cd is extremely rare and the downloads on their site sent the bandwidth all crazy, so they are no longer able to be downloaded there...

(Just for reference if that guy still thinks we're wrong)

try for BOTAR. If it doesn't work, I have another site with the mp3's.

maco 07-23-2005 06:02 PM

thank you!

oh, i heard the lyrics are slightly different between BOTAR and SM's Here's to Life....like two lines different or something. I can hear that they don't say "Back off you're out on the street again" but what do they say instead? I've been told before, but I forget. Is it "three went down but 2 would never come up again"? Something about a soldier on fire when it's "but I can't help agreeing with those that would not quit"

Did you know there's some random trad song that starts up at the end of the Here's to Life mp3?

Forest_Fire 07-23-2005 06:17 PM

I've never noticed. Here's the BOTAR lyrics (from the BOTAR forum):
How did Camus really die that night? Were they right? When he died was it really his time? Or was it suicide? And Holden Caulfield is a friend of mine, we go drinking from time to time and I find it gets harder every time.
Three went down (but only two of them came up again.) The minimal is criminal and less is a sin, though three went down (but only two of them came up again.) I'm not going to play if there ain't no way I'm going to win.
Hemingway never seemed to mind the banality of a normal life and I find it gets harder every time. So he aimed the shotgun into the blue, placed his face in between the two and sighed; "Here's to life!"
Three went down (but only two of them came up again.) The minimal is criminal and less is a sin, though three went down (but only two of them came up again.) I'm not going to play if there ain't no way I'll win.
Hey there Salinger, what did you do? Just when the world was looking at you to write anything that meant anything, you told us you were through. And it's been years since you passed away, but I see no plaque and I see no grave. And I cannot help believing that you wanted it that way. And Vincent Van Gogh, why do you weep? You were on your way to heaven but the road was steep. And who was there to break your fall? We're guilty, one and all. And I don't know much but I do know this: with a golden heart comes a rebel fist and every single soldier wasn't fired, some have quit.
And it makes me sick when I think of it: all my heroes could not live with this and I hope you rest in peace because with us you never did. And _ _ _ you were much too young and you changed my life but I draw the line at suicide, so here's to life.
Here's Streetlight version:

maco 07-23-2005 06:23 PM

It's "KDC you were much too young" KDC= Kurt D. Cobain. And that section is in the Streetlight one, just not printed.

Oh, the trad ska was the fact that I had a ska page up while I had windows media going and the website was playing This Politik by Kiwi the Child

Forest_Fire 07-23-2005 06:52 PM

Ah, that KDC thing makes sense. They've played Smells Like Teen Spirit before live.

maco 07-23-2005 07:25 PM

mmhmm i just learned that like last week on myspace

Actually Catch 22 originally did Here's To Life. I have a live clip of it on my computer from 'back in the day'. Maybe you guys should take this discussion to the BOTAR/Catch22/Streetlight thread in punk, not to be a knob but a lot of this stuff has been covered in there already and it seems silly to clutter this thread up when there's another thread for it. :)

I went to an ace ska show last night. Unfortunately there were some line-up changes, especially the last minute pulling-out of Captain Hotknives, that made it slightly less amazing than it was meant to be. Still utterly amazing/great/fun though, and I met so many new people, mostly through internet, and some through friends, and it was magic. Here's a quick rundown of the show if anyone's interested:
Midnight Crazies - hadn't seen these before, they were mental, some of their stuff was heavier/more skacore than I'm really into nowadays, but they had a lot of upbeat dancy stuff too, and they finished off on a jazzy number that was wicked
Random Hand - hadn't seen these before either, but a friend used to go out with their bassist, and they were pretty awesome! Bit different because their singer was also their solitary horn (trombone), which obviously brought back memories of Capdown, but they were pretty mental and good, also probably a bit more mental/heavier than I'm into at the moment, as I've been listening to a lot more mellower stuff
The Lock Up - I had seen this band before, and they were bloody amazing again, their singer always throws up though and you're not sure where to look when that happens, they haven't been around long but they're just amazing 2-tone-y stuff, and I can't wait until my mate releases their album on his label in a couple of months...
The Junglists - hadn't seen this lot before, but I am keen on them and have their EP, and to be honest I expected more. Apparently they haven't practiced lately due to exams, which might explain why their harmonising was badly off at times, and their violin was terrible during one song, I am still confused as to why this band was above The Lock Up on the bill
The Scrub - I was so excited to see this band, and with good reason, everyone has told me they're amazing live and I love their EP so very much, and they came onstage and I couldn't hold back any more I had to dance. I danced a lot, they played a lot of new songs, truly excellent, and the ones from the EP were just beautiful live, wow they are amazing
Splitters - possibly my favourite UK band of the moment, they were headlining and wow. It was ace, it was far too hot to dance but I managed it for a couple of songs as Braidley (their singer) told me off for 'not breaking a sweat' after the first couple of songs, but I was mesmerised I've seen them before but they are insanely good
After the gig was funny, my mate was putting it on and we were staying at his house so we had to wait for everyone to leave before we did and we were hanging in the car park until about 1am, and I was handing out donuts & muffins to the bands/other people I'd met, and it was just awesome times. I finally talked to Fez, the drummer of Splitters, who I swapped mixtapes with a while ago, and he seemed really nice, I gave him an entire packet of muffins, and Tom their trombone player seemed well happy. I also gave chips to Jym who is a roadie guy for Sonic Boom Six, I only met him properly last night, such an excellent guy. Went back to Alex's house eventually and managed to get 1.5 hours sleep from 6:30-8am today, wow I am so tired now, 8 of us just spent the entire night drinking and laughing and talking etc. Wicked.

Sorry for the lack of punctuation/sense that post made, I only got in a while ago and I am still so **** tired.

wha..? Did they leave it off of keasby nights, or was it something tomas wrote after KN, but before leaving the band? Are there any other songs like that (that tomas wrote post KN, before leaving the band)?

Amish Pornstar 07-24-2005 02:23 PM

jeez, I guess I shouldn't of said Here's To Life, it's still on good song whoever did it BOTAR, Streetlight Manifesto, or Catch 22

If any of you would like to help with that, I'd appreciate it. Right now I'm just trying to make a small list (4-5 albums) that represent each wave of ska. You know, "essential" albums form each wave.

Da' Ska Man 07-24-2005 06:40 PM

1st wave-the skatalites or judge dread
two tone-the specials or madness(both great bands) or the toasters
2nd wave/revival-the mighty mighty bosstones
3rd wave-its an easy one to name, basicaly any new ska band. id go with reel big fish, they seem to be leading the 3rd wave.

i can only say some great bands not albums, srry. ull have to find the albums yourself but there ya go.

I think he wrote it after KN but before leaving. I guess I should have said BOTAR *recorded* it first

Forest_Fire 07-25-2005 01:40 PM

I actually didn't know that. I remember reading the BOTAR cd booklet(on the internet, I don't actually have the cd), and when he started talking about here's to life, he said he had written it three years ago and was glad to finally have a recorded version.

Two-tone is second wave.

MMB are 3rd wave.

maco 07-25-2005 02:22 PM

haha You're paying attention. I didn't notice he split those. Oh, and for the redefinitions:
1st wave = Trad which is short for "traditional"
2nd wave = 2Tone
I don't think 3rd wave has another name

sketchyjoe 07-25-2005 02:27 PM

3rd wave = Ska-punk, Ska-core etc
