i think either aquabats or rx bandits were my first ska band...streetlight manifesto is good too i like them a lot and BotAR is sick

-Superman- 10-24-2005 08:14 PM
No i didnt...and yeh I understand when ppl hear like Reel Big FIsh and Aquabats and dont like it...BUt once u hear old Catch 22 and Streetlight, theres no going back
I dunno... There are a lot of big ska bands that i dont like at all (Reel Big Fish)... I try to stick to Catch22, Streetlight, Smoke Like A Fish, Aquabats, My Dad is Big, and other small ska bands... For a while the only ska band I knew was Catch 22... I didnt know about Streetlight till i was searching music.download.com for some ska music and they just happened to turn up...

few_dollars_more 10-24-2005 08:54 PM

Yeh, its true Streetlight is relatively new...But they r just so damn good BotAR is pretty kik *** too, ill agree with that...

mosaic 10-25-2005 01:19 PM

Kithkin 10-25-2005 03:28 PM

-Superman- 10-25-2005 08:03 PM

The Big are one of the UK's top ska bands, who are on tour right now..

few_dollars_more 10-25-2005 08:51 PM

Yeh please try to spell a bit better, took me a couple trys to read that one.

Black Ink 10-25-2005 09:23 PM

Hey guys.

Little bit of an update: I missed the Ska is Dead tour due to my school schedule being hectic. I also missed Big D and the Kids Table so I'm uber :upset:

But I did get a radio show like planned. I do the show with my friend and we rotate songs. I play a lot of ska so if anyone wants to listen we're on Tuesdays 2-4 (Eastern time) and you can go to www.wvof.org and listen to the FM webstream. Enjoy.

few_dollars_more 10-25-2005 10:42 PM

Yeh I missed ska is dead too, I have seen it the past couple years but I'm kind of tied up aswell, so I missed it...

 You guys I don't see the big deal, I could read that perfectly fine.

I missed the C*E!/NoComply gig at London because I don't like NoComply much, it's a shame I didn't know The Big were supporting cus I definitely would've gone if I knew they were!

However I might be seeing Captain Everything! on Sunday at my friend's Uni, and I will be seeing The Big at the Xmas Ska Explosion at Camden in December. It's such a shame they can't record as they're awesome :upset:

Kithkin 10-26-2005 08:00 AM

Why can't they record?

I've never heard of the Big, and what with the other problems with the series of exclamations, I assumed it was simply an abbreviation.

the-UK-ska-scene 10-26-2005 04:57 PM

Weellllll I can't remember all the details but through the fuzzy haze of pre-gig banter we had ... 3 months ago (so this is a very fuzzy haze) I think it was something like, the bassist of The Big also plays for The Beat, so he has contractual obligations to them meaning that his record company won't let him record with any other bands. The buggers.

Glitterati 10-26-2005 05:18 PM

Anyone listen to a ska band from Vancouver called the Karmakanix? They're really sweet, and I'm seeing them for the second time next weekend.

Kithkin 10-26-2005 07:10 PM

That's a strange contract...

Let that be a lesson, read contracts and don't let them put in stupid, pointless limitations like that.

Or its more like not... I dont see how you got half of that stuff...

And by the way... The Big are horrible...

the-UK-ska-scene 10-27-2005 02:05 AM

Why must people antagonise me when I'm being nice?! Do to others as you would have done unto you and all that guys. Be nice.

Never heard of them...

In my opinion local bands always preform better live than big name bands...
Never heard of them...

Yeh, thats very true in most cases.

mr.k 10-29-2005 05:47 PM

i think its true in almost all cases

Most = Almost All

HitHardDrums55 10-29-2005 06:36 PM

burn

few_dollars_more 10-29-2005 06:51 PM

lol, wasnt meant to be a burn, just what i thought the definition of "most" was...

LifeIsDandy 10-29-2005 07:51 PM
I understand when ppl hear like Reel Big FIsh and Aquabats and dont like it...BUt once u hear old Catch 22 and Streetlight, theres no going back
I always thought the exact opposite. I had a few of my friends who had very little knowledge of ska listen to The Aquabats, and they all seemed to enjoy it. As for Reel Big Fish, they're a decent third wave band, but often times once people hear that, they start looking deeper for better bands in the same genre, such as older Catcher 22. That's just my opinion though
lol, wasnt meant to be a burn, just what i thought the definition of "most" was...
haha well burn was kind of a joke, i havent seriously said it in years...but in a way it was kind of serious but oh well i just confused myself...

-Superman- 10-29-2005 10:05 PM

Chill... There are a lot of huge or big bands that sound incredible live... Green Day, The Offspring, and Funeral For A Friend... To name a few...

But then again, a lot of bands suck a lot live: Blink 182 (i still think they are insainly talented but Tom just can't sing live) and I dont think My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy sing well live either...

Most does not = Almost All...

few_dollars_more 10-29-2005 10:28 PM

here I'll look up the OFFICIAL def of most. Most - 1.Greatest in number.
2. Greatest in amount, extent, or degree. So yes, most does pretty much mean almost all. And its ok Hitharddrums, I confuse myself all the time...

few_dollars_more 10-29-2005 10:32 PM

Yeh, I agree most ppl hear aquabats and RBF first, and most are then hooked. I'm talking about the ppl that firmly hate ska FROM listening to those two bands, but then they hear Streetlight, Catch, BotAR and change their view. I hope u can understand that, cause it does look kinda confusing

Kithkin 10-30-2005 02:53 AM

Big ska bands aren't usually fun live. Mostly because they pack the house and there's no room to dance.

Jessizzle 10-30-2005 05:55 AM
Big ska bands aren't usually fun live. Mostly because they pack the house and there's no room to dance.
Oh so true.
Local Ontario ska is my favourite genre!

shamed-angel 10-30-2005 06:15 AM

Adequate 7 are the greatest brass driven band I've ever heard/seen/met.
Big ska bands aren't usually fun live. Mostly because they pack the house and there's no room to dance.
That's very true. I saw Reel Big Fish and there were a load of Pop-Punk fags like pushing and screaming and stuff, and all the ska fans were just there for a good skank.

pedro durruti 10-30-2005 04:46 PM

Heh, well here pretty much every ska band isn't that big. Actually, this seems to be changing.. Streetlight was pretty crowded, now granted I was able to skank every now and then, but when I did there wasn't a lot of room. When I saw the Aquabats back in June there was no room at all. On the other hand, I saw Suicide Machines and there was plenty of room.

By the way, Slow Gherkin rules.
