the Slackers had a 19+ date and a AA date for us, Too bad i missed it anyways :(

Leftover Jello 07-03-2005 11:15 PM
Yeah, I found out about them when The Slackers were coming here, but they like to play 21+ shows also. They were playing with Westbound Train on Friday and I really wanted to go. I'm getting really pissed off that I can't see some of my favorite bands because of alcohol
I know what you mean, I really like the band Nuffsed, they play shows every week at this one club, but it is always 21+. If you ever get a chance to see them as well, you should. They kind of play a reggae/rock/dub/dancehall and are very good. I think they are going on tour over the summer, although last night was only the second all-ages show I've seen them play.

Some revisions I may probably add to the initial list.

The Arrogant Son's of Bitches have good music, not just a good live show. Not all of it is good, but those songs that are good are exceptional. Give their disco a listen through and you'll see. Simply listen to RSTLNE, or track #2 on the discography (actually the first 7 or 8 tracks are all far above average).

Less than Jake do have one good cd. Though, it is still my second least favorite cd on my playlist, slightly edging out the new Planet Smashers cd (though, to be fair, 90% of the cds on the list are certified favorites of mine already, I've been listening to new music on my computer for 3 months, it was time for some music I could sing along with).

I don't like the Planet Smashers and I still can't explain why. Their new album didn't help even if it was produced by Chris Murray. I guess the man if failable.

Not enough people listen to the Smooths. They suffer the same fate most of the american ska bands that were around at the same time as the Toasters do, few know who they are. See also Jump with Joey.

I can listen to the Dogged Skankers in the backround while I play videogames when I'm not paying attention to the lyrics. I have something against bands that don't sing in words I can understand (which is why I don't listen to death metal and the Casualties) Though I don't really ever listen to them. Maybe I should try listening to ska-p...

The Taj Motel Trio are awsome. Especially the song Woo!!! off Life of the Party.

Forest_Fire 07-06-2005 03:54 PM

I was just looking through the first page of this thread ot find a new band or two to listen to. I remembered hearing the name Jaya the cat before, so I decided to check them out.

wow... they're really good.

Daniel! 07-06-2005 03:59 PM

Has anyone picked up the Sublime tribute album? Fishbone and Jack Johnson are both really good.

Jessizzle 07-06-2005 06:16 PM

Sublime sucks.

king of suede 07-06-2005 07:45 PM

sorry if anyone mentioned this... but i think goldfinger should be on there... even though they're not a ska band anymore... in late 80's, early 90's, they did alot of ska... but then they went to the hardcore band they are now... but they WERE a pretty good ska band

ScuzzBucket89 07-06-2005 09:15 PM

anyone gonna go to ska is dead 3! im pumped for it even though it's like 3 months away, i'm gonna try and make it to the show in NY at the knitting factory

pedro durruti 07-06-2005 09:23 PM

The Ozomatli's cover is probably the best song on it. I have no idea who Ozomatli are but if the rest of their stuff is as good as that cover, I need to check them out.

They were a pretty good ska band. But they have never been a hardcore band. They are now a pop-punk band.

Then listen to The Stray Bullets. Very similar to Jaya the Cat. A little faster and in my opinion better.

Yeah man. I was listening to the tribute in the shop last week, and I was digging Badfish/Boss DJ, Date Rape, and Waiting For My Ruca (although well I love all the originals of those), I also thought Santeria was pretty cool. But then I was listening again today, and April 29th, 1992 came on and I was like "wow who is this?" and the dude I know who works there said "it's Ozomatli", and I was like "huh? Never heard of them" but man they sounded gooood. Really good.

sketchyjoe 07-07-2005 11:08 AM

I've got an Ozomatli album. They're pretty awesome. I think they've got a song on one of the THPS games.

They're wicked fresh, as Tom would say

Seeing as they're local to you, don't spose you'll be going to their gig at Boxing Club on 23rd July? Should be immense, with all the awesome bands playing that night :thumb:

Arucard 07-11-2005 03:55 AM

Did any of you guys go to see The Filaments on their last tour thing? They were great, as usual, but as usual they had a stupidly short set.

the-UK-ska-scene 07-11-2005 06:10 AM

No I didn't go, I wanted to go to the last gig last night at Astoria but I couldn't cus I was at another gig. Shame they had a stupidly short set. Last time I saw them was the best time, they had written this amazing new ska song, it was rad.

But last night, the gig I was at instead of Filaments, was Summer Of Ska tour at Underworld. I guess the fact there was an ace gig at Astoria, combined with the whole terrorism thing, really had an effect because there must've only been about 70 people (at most) at the gig I was at, it was soooo weird.

The gig was amazing, though. It was Zen Baseballbat (but I left before they came on), Smoke Like A Fish, Chris Murray, Catch-It Kebabs, and Sadie's Doll. Sadie's Doll were amazing! Absolutely ace, you should check them out here

http://www.sadiesdoll.co.uk/media.php

The other bands who I watched were obviously amazing as well, and everyone was just dancing (except me and Vallely, who were far too tired). It was an amazing show :)

Yay!

In other news, The Suicide Machines are playing 2 hours away on saturday but I can't go. But on my birthday (the 22nd) SGR, Distorted Penguins and Badfish are playing.

And then a Ska Sunday show in philly the next sunday, but I need to request off.

Forest_Fire 07-11-2005 11:03 AM

Does that mean they started recording on june 25th?

Kithkin, when you have the time, could you change something for me? On the very first page, there is a short description of the band Five Hours that I wrote. And it sucks. It's one of those things that isn't important, but if I leave it crappy then it will drive my crazy. I'm slightly obsesseve compulsive. Could you change it to this?

Five Hours are a pop punk band with a ska flavor (no horns), from Louisville, Kentucky. They wrote extremely catchy songs such as "Peanut Butter and Jelly" and "No racist soul". The bass lines will blow you away, and it's just the kind of music that will have you dancing and singing along - if you can keep up. They broke up in either 2001 or 2002, and everyone is still waiting for a reunion show.

pedro durruti 07-11-2005 05:25 PM

Haha I don't know if Big D's bassist always does this, but throughout their whole set yesterday he was making weird faces along with the music. I've seen them three times and I've never noticed that before. Maybe he was just really high this time.
