|
has anyone else heard of the planet smashers?
|
The guy's called Walt Jabsco.
Jerry Dammers (keyboard player in The Specials and architect of the 2-tone movement) came up with it with help from Horace Panter (the bass player). It's based on Peter Tosh (Jamaican Reggae/Ska dude.) Here's a comparison: Peter Tosh : Walt Jabsco
Woo, Thanks a lot  |
Sup in the house ska people. There's a line stuck in my head, but I can't figure out what song it's from. I'm pretty sure it's a ska-punk song, but I can't put my finger on what band and song it is. It goes something like this: "... and I never was a fan of the way she moved, it's a little too slick, it's a little too smooth". Anyone know the song?
|
Thats the Stray Bullets - America
The members of Jaya the Cat that stayed state side are in that band. |

|
I'm guessing thats the dvd release, cause I think i have the video at home.
|
Yeah, it is. How is it?
|
Its good enough. I don't really watch music videos as a general rule, but its got a good variety of bands on it.
|
Do you know if the only Link 80 stuff on there is that Verbal Kint video?
|
There was just one video per band on the vhs. But this is a dvd with extra stuff...
|
sounds cool
|
Has anyone heard big d's cd porch life? i luv good luck and how it goes but supposedly this one's hip hop?? i dunno...someone help me out and tell me about it :)
|
For anybody thats interested, I just found a really good explanation (although Kithkin's was excellent) of the evolution of Ska & Reggae, Two Tone Ska, and 3rd Wave Ska.
http://www.skasummit.com/ska_history.asp Enjoy |

I have it...I sort of bought it by mistake. I don't really reccomend it. It's basically them just ****ing around and freestyling and making prank calls. If you're a really hardcore fan, maybe you'll appreciate it and get the jokes, but I don't really get it. If you love ska, don't buy it. If you love Big D, then go for it. |
Check your gmail K-rizzle. And why haven't you added my hard-laboured band descriptions onto the first posts yet?!?!?!?! Was all my effort for nothing??!!?
Teehee, just joking. You're the man. |
Cause I'm lazy...
and it never really occured to me to do that:) |
I knew it was because you're lazy :p Nah, just kidding, it's even in alphabetical order! Amazing!
There's a ska-fest all-dayer happening near me on my birthday, I think I've decided how I'm celebrating ;) Fancy coming over on 13th August Kith? We can skank, and I can drink legally and it'll be good times!! That goes for the rest of you, too :D |
I would if I had money, but I don't even have a job lined up for the summer yet:p
Can you add a bit more of a description to Duff Muffin please. That they rock is fine for me, but not everyone else;) And maybe a bit more to Midnight Crazies. |
And anyone else who wants to do any bands are welcome to. Just try to find a song for free somewhere and include a breif description of their sound and maybe what makes them special.
Copy this and put information in where it is needed: Band Name by your name: Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description Description. alright, I updated the first few pages with Jas's stuff and a few other people's stuff and cleared out most of the .ace files that don't link anymore, updated a few of the bands, added the Stray Bullets and The Hippos.
Ihate, write something for link 80. If anyone else has written up a band in the past between the first page and the last 2 or 3, find it, then quote it and ill add it soon enough. |
I did kith ya bastard, like 20 pages back! But I'll write a better one.
Oh yeah, and if you guys haven't already, check out Rico Rodriguez's live album Togetherness, it's seriously one of the greatest things I've ever heard.. the man is amazing |
The Rudiments by Peter (ihatecelebrities): Another Asian Man Records band, also from the East Bay, that I like to describe as Fishbone meets Operation Ivy. They are pretty crazy in their songs, and have silly/funny lyrics. Most of their ska can be found on the album Circle Our Empire, but you can also hear some great punk on their album Bitch Bitch Bitch. Link 80 by Peter (ihatecelebrities): Asian Man Records skacore straight out of the famous East Bay. The band is currently on hiatus and has been since 2002, but most fans anxiously await their return. Link 80, although having one name, is basically two bands- Nick Traina Link 80 and Ryan Noble Link 80. Same band, two very different sounds, yet always played that good ol' skacore. Punk vocals and hardcore breakdowns with an occasional ska riff and many catchy horn lines. RIP NICK. ya i tohught it was good
|
I bought The Specials s/t 12" today for £5 in a second hand record shop. I've been going in there ages, and I only just found the ska vinyl...... It's in the rack labelled "reggae", all mixed up with the reggae stuff  Well, I guess it's forgivable, seeing as ska came from reggae.....
|
Yeah, I see that a lot too.
Turn up the Ska has gotten better since I first saw it a long while ago. Now on campus I listen to it instead of wasting my mp3 player's batteries. |
Kith did you like that Splitters track I g-g-g-g-gmailed you? Or have you not heard it. It's proper mint, son!
May have some more UK ska pour vous. Just lemme know if you want it, like. |
Heh, now I'm just ignoring you for the fun of it:)
They are right good trad music. That kind is always good live stuff. Doesn't kill you after 3 songs. I want, I always want. |
Is Slightly Stoopid a ska band? I'm at their site right now listening to some live song and it's rap, not necessarily bad rap but I could have sworn they were ska. ANyways they're playing with Fishbone on June 9th
|
They are about as close as you can get to sublime. They don't stick to one style. They range from pop-punk to ska to reggae to rap.
They are a good live band. A bit to jam bandish for me, but not overly so. I imagine even less so if they aren't the headliner. |
Heh, now I'm just ignoring you for the fun of it:)
SLAP :p Yeah, it was mint at the gig cus everyone was just skanking down the front (wasn't particularly busy), just dancing, minding their own business, as it should be. Then $up came on and everyone down the front (including me) got absolutely mullered. Mullered, I say. Fez from Splitters sent me this mix CD I got this morning, it's mostly like trad ska he's taken off all his old vinyls, I've been listening to it all day, it's fucking brill!! :thumb: |
im seeing reel big fish w/ the pietasters tommorow night
|
I'm seeing Big D with the Stray Bullets may 6th. It's going to be amazing.
|
