the daycare swindlers are awesome and their last show was amazing
Who told you about them or how'd you find out
I read a short review of them in the Observer that was only a few lines long but said they were great so when I saw it at my local independent record shop a few months later I bought it then uploaded it.

pedro durruti 04-04-2005 07:43 PM

Observer?

Hey Kith how is the Rx Bandits show these days

sketchyjoe 04-04-2005 07:53 PM

Not addressed to me but...I saw them a month ago about and it was good, real high energy and I love the jam sessions they do.

I don't know. I've only seen them once and it was at Warped tour '02 and their stage was right in front of a dusty area so you couldn't dance without wheezing.

Jas 04-05-2005 03:04 AM
Nice avatar Jas
Cheers dude.

Ok kids, Adam announced my exciting announcement

So I got an interview with Big D, I may need your help coming up with questions though because as much as I love that band's I don't usually pay attention to the members and such. Anyhow, we can save that for another week, you don't want to peak too early with your amazing suggestions. ;)

You lot should listen to Square if you haven't already. I was meant to be seeing them a couple of weeks ago but I couldn't :upset: But they're amazing anyway. Swedish (if I'm not mistaken) ska-punk. Innit.
So I got an interview with Big D.
I thought you were pregnant with Kithkin's baby. That would've been much more exciting.

I love you Jas!

Wow dude, nice thread.... very informative

Whenever I hear Five Iron Frenzy, i just laugh, and laugh, and laugh some more....
If I remember one of their songs went like this....

WHEN I GO OUT I PLAY IN THE STREET
I GET HIT BY CARS
I MAKE MASHED POTATOES
I GET HIT BY CARS!

All of this was song in a Screamo style...... Very interesting

Mizar 04-06-2005 03:27 PM

I was at a pretty decent ska show over the weekend. My friends' band and four other bands from southwest Ontario played at a club in my city. It was definately the fullest I've ever seen the place compared to all the other shows which normally sell pretty well.

Five iron frenzy was one of the best third wave ska bands

efdrummer89 04-06-2005 08:08 PM

Agreed...... I'm just saying some.... most of their lyrics are crazy.

pedro durruti 04-07-2005 08:09 PM

I got a Rudiments album and two Asian Man Records pins in the mail today

Jas 04-08-2005 09:51 AM

I bought a Bosstones album for £4 the other day

I have a few now. A collection, one might say.

I bought a Suicidal Tendencies album yesterday, there's one song I've listened to so far (haven't listened to the whole album yet) where there's a kind of ska section. Coolios.

Nearly bought a King Tubby/ Scientist/ other dub vinyl today but couldn't decide on one.

pedro durruti 04-08-2005 01:21 PM

I think I know which song you're talking about, Half Way up My Head right?

Forest_Fire 04-08-2005 01:23 PM

I got my first bosstones cd the other day. I think it was "Question the answers" or something like that. It hasn;t come in yet, but what other of their albums would you recommend?

Jas 04-08-2005 01:49 PM
what other of their albums would you recommend?
Let's Face It. It's an awesome CD! I have 2 copies, cus I bought them both for about £1 each at charity shops
I think I know which song you're talking about, Half Way up My Head right?
Yeah that's the one :D

I also found my copy of the Adequate Seven EP the other day. It's not ska, but it's funkcore with horns - everyone check it out. You probably won't be able to get the EP, but they have a full-length album called "Songs Of Innocence And Of Experience", and they're about to release another full-length soon! They supported Capdown on a tour about a year and a half ago, and when I saw a show on that tour I thought Ad7 totally raped Capdowns arse :o

Forest_Fire 04-08-2005 01:57 PM

Adequate Seven are awesome. I've only heard about two or three songs, but they're on my mp3 player and I love them

sketchyjoe 04-08-2005 02:09 PM

They're really good live too.

A Few Brit Bands - Maybe you'd like to add these to the first few posts in the thread Kith? So people can see them when they first look at the list of bands.

Sonic Boom Six - A four-piece (recently reduced from five) from Manchester. They play a catchy, awesome mix of ska, hip-hop, punk, and more. They consist of one guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, and samples. Leila the singer also plays this crazy mouth-keyboard thing, I don't know what it's called. Signed to Moon Ska, they're amazing. People Acklike They Don't Know

Solabeat Alliance - Another Moon Ska band, recently split which is sad. They combine skapunk, punkier punk, and more two-tone influences to make some bloody smooth tracks which can just wash over you on summer days (I'm thinking of Dusk Til Dawn). Heroes

APB - Based up North, these guys make sweet ska/dub. Lots of horns, you get the impression that the music is really important. Recently had quite a large line-up change, and "re-formed" though they never split. Will start gigging again soon. A band to check out!

Stickybacks - This band also recently split, but they mix ska with dark, screamier stuff, and it comes out damn well. If you like your ska dirty and rough around the edges, this lot are for you. Pin The Tail

Milk2Sugars - Ska-punk band, you might also recognise the legendary Matty Pee who helped out with TheSka and PunkerMentality (he's pretty smart at internet design things). Wiped Out

The Filaments - British punk band, mostly play punk, but when they play ska they do it bloody well. There's a new ska track in the works which is amazing, let's hope it's on the next album! B.P.C.

Midnight Crazies - Ska-core band, making a lot of friends and a name for themselves at the moment. I might be seeing them with Streetlight Manifesto, should be good.

The Scrub - Excellent Bristol ska, I think Kith will agree that these guys are the mack. Recently been picked up by Do The Dog Records and released an EP, it's ace! Fine Time

Catch-It Kebabs - Now legendary renowned local heroes of the Ilkley/Leeds area, Kebabs are a 10-piece with the recent addition of Beefy. They play jazz/ska/punk but don't pigeonhole them! Their combination of excellence and loveliness means they make friends and tour almost constantly, even though they're still in college/uni. Amazing. Download She Needs Protection here

Duff Muffin - Local to me skacore boys, they're also on Do The Dog and they rock hard.

3DayBenda - Another local band, one of Vallely's favourites, they blend ska/rock/emo/a bit of metal, and it comes up trumps! They've got better since I first saw them, and make you want to dance. Download The Understanding and A Thousand Pounds Good here

The Junglists - Another band that Kith can testify for, they're ska-ish with a violin. They are lovely guys, and are climbing the ladder of scene-ness fast. Download Lies and I'm Sorry Dave, I Can't Let You Do That here

Smoke Like A Fish - Two-toney 3rd wave from our fair isle, Toasters-esque with a keyboard to boot. Excellent band, make me feel good and I want to dance when I hear this music. Also snatched up by Do The Dog, excellent find there by our Kev!

sketchyjoe 04-08-2005 04:30 PM

You forgot Farse. They rocked.

Jas 04-08-2005 04:33 PM

Farse are already on the main list thing. There's just no bio or MP3 up for them.

Forest_Fire 04-08-2005 08:32 PM

Weapons of Brass Destruction?

asdf 04-08-2005 09:33 PM

I'll post some songs from the band that got me into ska. It was a local band. I started listening to them because the bassist was a family friend. They were called the cheapskates (which is taken by another band, I know). They really got me to listen to a lot more local punk and ska, and then to more well-known ska. They broke up, got rid of the bassist I knew, and formed a new band called one for the books, but it's not really the same to me. They now think that their cheapskates mucic is pretty lame, but I still enjoy listening to it occassionally.
So here's two songs:
Make a stand
A-OK

And their new band's purevolume site:
Weapons of Brass Destruction?
Fair point.

Weapons Of Brass Destruction - This band is out of the westcountry, but is now based near me as well. They describe themselves as "Beachball skacore" and they're just ace. They're fun, a little unlucky, and they know how to work hard at making a name for themselves. They'll be getting bigger. Download Kapow!, Get Your Ska Out Of My Drive!, and Bull Dozers On The Playground here

Some more local bands to me then:

Harpoon Larsen - Ska-punk stuff, sometimes reminiscent of Big D. I haven't brought a proper copy of their new EP yet, but I'm hoping it's better recording quality than the last. They've only been around a year, but they've been on nearly every ska bill in the area since (a combination of luck and judgement), and also the guitarist seems to be everywhere I go - even when I'm in London or at Reading! Listen to some tracks here (no download)

Speaking Of Losers - More skapunk, the singer's voice really reminded me of Dickie from the Bosstones at times, and I thought these guys amazingly ace when I saw them. I met them all a couple of weeks later, and the singer seemed like a bit of a dick (I'm just biased cus he said Howards Alias were crap) but nonetheless good music I think. Listen (again, no downloads)

Zero Consent - Another skapunk band, they seem really nice and they gig a lot with bands who come through, and also Harpoon Larsen. I saw them advertise for a trumpet player once on Mx. Download Waster and Defeatist here

Game Show Host - They call themselves ska-dub-reggae-core, and they are pretty much veterans of the local (Portsmouth) scene now. I really really liked them when I saw them, they seem really laid back and the saxophone player used to work at the bar at the venue. Useless information ++. I haven't seen them play anywhere for ages, I can only assume they're on some kind of hiatus, hopefully not permanent! Download Segregate, DHF, and A Change Is As Good As A Rest here

Blame It On Edd - One of the best pop-punk/punkska bands (without horns) that I've seen successfully play ska. (Another good band to play ska without horns is Whitmore, but I don't like them so much.) The drummer (Edd, no less), has the most awesome hair ever. They've played with big bands to come through, including Rx Bandits.

Jas 04-09-2005 04:51 PM

Ska-P are splitting up after 10 years. They're going on a farewell tour covering Spain, Portugal, France, Italy... No England. Shame.

This is a lovely quote they made, and what wonderful English!! ;)
During 10 years , fueled with energy , passion and hard work , SKA P has been delivering its music and message all over the world . Now we have taken the decision to put our career into brackets for an indefinite length . Before this , we have decided to do a farewell tour we would like to share with all the people that have supported us during all these years ( the audience , our technical crew , promoters , medias , etc ....) . We know this is going to be a sad news for our fans and we present them our sincere apologizes . Due to this interruption in our career , we will not record a new album in the next future . Many thanks to all of you for your unwavering support .
mr.k 04-09-2005 08:00 PM

that sucks

Forest_Fire 04-10-2005 04:32 PM

Ska-P was okay most of the time.

/shamelessley tries to add a kentucky ska band into the mix

Five Hours - Ska/punk with no horns. This band was born when a metalhead befriended some ska kids. "Ska sucks" he said. "Even I could make better ska music than most of the bands you listen to". And so he teamed up with his friends to do just that. After about three years and one album, they broke up and the metal kid went on to be in amazing hardcore bands and the ska kids stayed back in town and continue with new ska and reggae bands.

Untitled 04-11-2005 01:55 PM

Hi all.

Quick question for any ska experts.

Does anyone know of a designer who has done the ska two tone black and white picture things. Kinda like whats in Kithkins avator.

If you could help me on my mission to make a ska related graphics project, i would be eternaly gratefull :thumb:

sketchyjoe 04-11-2005 04:42 PM

The guy's called Walt Jabsco.

Jerry Dammers (keyboard player in The Specials and architect of the 2-tone movement) came up with it with help from Horace Panter (the bass player). It's based on Peter Tosh (Jamaican Reggae/Ska dude.)

Here's a comparison:
