ok i have a question, the specials are one of my favorit bands and i love other two tone bands but what is it that makes it "two tone" i mean i cant figure out what the "two tone " sound is, i mean what makes a band two tone....... help me please
|
2nd - The Specials, The (English) Beat, Madness, The Selecter, Bad Manners, Apollinaires, Swinging Cats, Higsons, and The Papers.
What was changed - Two Tone, this is where Two Tone came from. The Label 2 Tone Records was responsible for this revival and second wave. THis is where Punk, Pop and Rock were minced with Ska and Ska Punk bands first came about. Also it is centered in England, not Jamacia. The Dance - Im even less sure about this than i was in the first wave. My best guess is it is about halfway between 3rd wave and 1st wave ska. Probably more movement and maybe some moshing by now.
two tone is 2nd wave, generally labeled by the time peroid (late 70s and 80s), the location (england) many were on the label "2 tone" |
so thats why there arnt any new two tone bands?
is it posible for someone to start a band now and say that its "two tone"? just wondering |
Yeah, it is possible. Two tone is a sound
|
Wow.... streetlight just played in my town (cleveland) and I'm still getting over the shock of how awesome it was. there are no words to desribe it. but what was really awesome is they made a mix of point/counterpoint and keasbey nights. i would have never expected that to sound good but it was one of the best ones they played and they played all the songs on the everything goes numb cd. best concert I've ever had the pleasure of attending.
|
thanks for the list. ive been lookin for something like that
|
very nicely done, however imo catch 22 was only good for keasbey nights their breakoff band Streetlight Manifesto however is Excellent :thumb:
Streetlight Manifesto is the best ska band out there :thumb: |
Last time I ordered from Asian Man I got some crappy split
They keep sending me the same bonus stuff. I have 3 copys of King Apparatus's self titled. And yeah, 2-Tone is a sound more than anything. You can call the Toasters 2-Tone even though they weren't in the time period and they weren't on the label and be pretty accurate in describing them. |

Lucky for some, I have no copies!! I think Toasters are like 3rd wave in some places, though, again it's a case of you can't pigeonhole them. I was listening to Smoke Like A Fish the other day, followed straight after by The Toasters, and I was thinking how alike they are (and not just because of the keyboard, though that is a factor). You guys should really listen to more Smoke Like A Fish, make it a priority! :p |
Hey guys, I wanna find new bands to listen to but have no idea where to start with the ones suggested, theres too big a list! (not a bad thing :p)
I'm into ska stuff like Mad Caddies, Op Ivy, Sublime, Sonic Boom 6, Zen Baseball Bat, Madness...and just other punky stuff as well as rock so erm...you got any suggestions for other stuff to start off with? |
Start off with some earlier ska bands. You might like Prince Buster because Madness covered a lot of his songs and took a lot of influences from him. If you like Madness, you're sure to like similar bands like The Specials and The Selecter (great female vocals). For some skapunk you'll probably like The Forces of Evil (Reel Big Fish side project, I say don't even bother with RBF, they suck, but that's just my opinion), Spitvalves, Spring Heeled Jack, MU330 (make sure to check out other Asian Man bands- http://www.asianmanrecords.com/) and uh.... Howards Alias I guess.
|
cheers, will do
|
Peter- Do you have albums from these bands: Apollinaires, Swinging Cats, Higsons, and The Papers? If so I want to get them from you off Soulseek or AIM
|
Fraid not Peter.

I just found out that they are hitting up my local with NoComply and MU330! Frikkin MU330! At my local! I need an outfit! Props to Vallely, aaaah, I love him
Come over and I'll get you a copy;)
 One day I'll swim to America with big plans that you can take me to a show, and I'll turn up at your door and you'll run away :D In other news, some drunk dude asked me to marry him on Leicester Square on Friday... And it got me thinking, that actually happens to me more often than you'd think :naughty: |
I like ska but the only thing i have is Reel Big Fish, what are other rocky type ska bands like them?

The Forces of Evil Suburban Legends Five Iron Frenzy Mad Caddies I Voted for Kudos The Hippoes Suburban Rythem |
Ahh, The Forces of Evil, a band I have to listen to more often. Played them to my friend for the first time yesterday. It was the friend who gave me a Reel Big Fish promo thing that she got signed by Aaron Barrett, for my birthday, she rules :)
|
I have been listening to Operation Ivy, really loud, since I got in from work. Ahh, I think this could be the theme for my half term holiday :) Although Op Ivy kind of reminds me of the summer, and it's more like winter right now as there was hail and snow today. But yay Op Ivy! Never enough of that :D

so, Ska is Dead was insane. Superspecs, Kid Go Home, MU330, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Streetlight Manifesto... Who else went?
I'm seeing Superspecs and I Voted For Kudos soon. |
I'm seeing Superspecs and I Voted For Kudos soon.
I Voted For Kodos rule! They're starting their "Sincerely Boss Tour" on February 17th, and they're going all around the U.S, pretty much. The dates are on their site: www.iv4k.com I'd love to go see them, but unfortunately I live on the wrong side of the Atlantic! Hey ho. Can't really describe their sound, 'cause I'm crap at describing, but check out their album "Close Enough For Ska" though, and have a look at their purevolume page too, 'cause they've got seven **** good songs on their! Umm, another good band to check out, is Patent Pending. They've got like 21 songs on their purevolume page :thumb: |
I've been mainly listening to Chris Murray, Don Drummond and Rico Rodriguez recently.

I'm seeing Superspecs and I Voted For Kudos soon.
how were MU330 and VGS live? |
If you compare how The Glowskulls are live to their albums, they are probably one of the best live bands around.
They just sound terrible on album but put on a pretty good show. Which reminds me, I should listen to firme at least once before tonight. Its supposed to be a decent album. |
how were MU330 and VGS live?
MU330 was ****ing awesome. They put on an amazing show. They wwere my favorite band that played besides Streetlight. They did a lot of cool stuff and got the crowd really into it. I'm not really a fan of VGS's recorded stuff but they were also really good live. They had a great souind and they were a lot of fun to listen to. |
So, ska-people, any news on Keasby Nights 2?
|

Yeah same here, it's definitely fun to see that band although I don't listen to them much.
So, ska-people, any news on Keasby Nights 2?
None yet. According to Amazon it was released already, but errr, who listens to Amazon? I think it's meant to be released in like May or March or something |
