The STrokes - First Impressions Of Earth.

Yup, going to be the one to do it. Their new album is available on the interwebbernet now and I have had a chance to start listening. Here's my First Impressions of First Impressions:

When I was a kid there would always be some bully ****ing up my game. Then one day, these bullies changed. It was either because I grew gigantic guns and was just so drop-dead gorgeous that girls often exploded when they saw me or they just became normal people - ****ing wierd. This album is sort of like that. The Strokes blasted onto the scene a couple of years back with that patented, monotonous, late-70's-esque rock. Everyone loved that, they were the bullies pouring **** on the world. Now, they've changed. Julian is doing something with his voice. Nick and Fab are moving outward with their guitaring. They have advanced, this is GOOD. However, contrary to anything the NME write; The Strokes are nothing special. The bully that used to beat down has changed into someone new, but is no one new in the whole spectrum of people. Similarly, The Strokes arn't really bringing anything new to the world. That arguement is used with every band of the now. So, I'll leave it by saying their is some choons that everyone and his bully should have a listen to.

Your thoughts?

I dont really understand everything you said in your post, but i have heard Juice Box, and ive decided ill buy this album just to see how they have changed. Is This It was fantastic, and Room On Fire was a great second album. Hope this one is good.

Kyle 12-02-2005 04:38 PM

Just got tickets to see them live in february, I'm really excited about that. I heard most of their new songs from a live show radio 1 and they sounded really nice. The guitaring is much more advanced once again (Room on fire was advanced on Is this it methinks) and sounds really good. I love juicebox. I don't think they will ever be an amazing band but they make some really fun catchy songs.

Glue_it_back 12-02-2005 07:06 PM

i have a funny relationship with the strokes. i like them for the first two weeks after buying their album (i know theres only been two before this one) then i get bored. i like the new single though. but thats all ive heard. i will probably buy the album out of my christmas money. see how it goes. but by the single, i like where they are going

Luxor 12-02-2005 11:14 PM

I've only heard Juicebox so far.

I won't be buying it. But I will certainly download that sucker.

Aeaon 12-03-2005 12:15 AM

That's cool. But I'd rather wait for it to come out, cause it 'twont be very long...

Daniel! 12-03-2005 12:16 AM

It's not that bad at all. I'm still not finished listening to it, but I'm enjoying it so far.

ヴェア ラッセル 12-03-2005 12:42 AM

I downloaded four tracks and it's okay so far.

I didn't like Juicebox as much but I like The Other Side actually. It has a certain feel and groove to it.

Jacaranda 12-03-2005 01:29 AM

I've only heard Juicebox and I will say it was one of the worst single's from a band that's semi-respectable, that I've heard for a long time. Not a fan of it at all.

The NPC 12-03-2005 09:00 AM

Their first two albums are catchy guitar pop. They're good at making that kind of music, that much I can say.

seth86 12-03-2005 10:24 AM

you gotta listen to ize of the world

lilsolsman 12-03-2005 12:22 PM

I'm impressed by the new album. He started singing so much better.

But does anyone else think that the song Razorblade is oddly similar to Barry Manilow's Mandy?

Little Man being Erased 12-03-2005 09:11 PM

"Juicebox" is great. I'm looking forward to the actual release of this album.

was_so_beautiful 12-03-2005 09:13 PM

I like this new sound of the Strokes better. Instrumentally, it's much more complex and heavier. But I must say that after a while, the songs become very boring. The vocal melodies are just too similar I think

But yes, "Ize of the World" is a good song.

sgrevs 12-04-2005 05:13 AM

Juicebox is pretty wicked, quite a different heavier and faster sound. Ill try chek out the album.
Barstad. I shall miss them again, unless I happen upon some cash closer to the fact.
We wanted tickets for London but they sold out ina few minutes, we've got to get to Brighton now:confused:

Daniel! 12-04-2005 05:32 PM

Overall, I think the album is fine. I still like the first 2 better at the moment. This one may grow on me, though.

Happymeal 12-05-2005 03:06 PM

Just listened to Juicebox, I thought it was solid. Hopefully I can say the same about the album.

Iai 12-05-2005 06:36 PM

Juicebox is awesome. Blew me away when I first heard it.

I've never really liked The Strokes, either, but recently they're just starting to grow on me (well, Is This It? is, anyway). So I'll be getting it, sure.

schwypees 12-05-2005 07:27 PM

I haven't heard much of the Strokes, and what I've heard hasn't really done much for me. But I'm going to check out this album entirely because of the way you wrote that review. How can I not? Bullies pouring **** on the world? This album has got to be mind-boggling.

P.S. - No, I'm not being sarcastic.

neal_672 12-06-2005 12:03 PM

The album leaked?

Or is this on a website?

I can hardly wait to buy it, i love The Strokes.

It has leaked.

Kyle 01-02-2006 04:27 AM

So I'm just off to pick up this album? Anybody else doing the same today? I'll post some kind half arsed review later.

bov 01-02-2006 04:50 AM

i like Razorblade, Ize of the world, and electricityscape the best

Glue_it_back 01-02-2006 09:37 AM

im on 'heart in a cage' now. the first track dissapointed me, i like juicebox, ans this song so far is good.

neal_672 01-02-2006 10:51 AM

Just bought it today, i found the leak a week or so ago, i love it, nice to see they've gone a bit further in the Room On Fire direction yet somehow managed to incorporate the more Garage rock scene back into their sound. it's so much LOUDER than the other albums, really well produced.

8/10

Favourite tracks:

Heart In A Cage
Juicebox
Ize Of The World
Electricityscape

I'll do a Sputnik review when I get round to it, but here are my first impressions of first impressions for now...

Overall I was satisfied with the album and pleased with some of the standout tracks. As an album made by the Strokes it was suprisingly inconsistent, however for once this is something which must be celebrated. At least with this album each song doesn't sound like a sequel to the before it, this shows a progression from The Strokes, although not a giant leap some of the songs are certainly different. Here's a track rundown:

You Only Live Once: I had already heard live versions of this song and wasn't overly impressed, however it has grow on me a lot! Pretty typical of the Strokes, but a nice song 7.5/10

Juicebox The first single, it has lost the huge intial impact it had on me but I still love it, I have a feeling this will be a live favorite. 8/10

Heart in a Cage An early highlight of the album, both guitarists have really pushed themselves on the new album and created lead parts which sound really tasty, this is a prefect example. 8.5/10

Razorblade Maybe my favorite, the chorus sounds frightfully similar to Barry Manilow's Mandy. 9.5/10

On The Other Side It was Innevitable, this is the first dull track from the Strokes. It's not that it is a bad track, just nothing really interesting here. 6/10

Vision of Division Here we go, straight back into their new energetic sound, this song is amazing. The Solo is something which we have never heard from the Strokes, it sounds like something from SOAD!! 9.5/10

Ask Me AnythingNot sure where to start with this track, it never really struck me at all. Just a guitar(I think), Julians Vocals and maybe some strings on this one. It doesn't really take off like some of the others do. 5/10

Electrictyscape It's a nice song, typical Strokes I suppose...nothing special going on 7/10

Killing Lies Good in places, but 4 minutes a long time for a song which doesn't really do alot/ 6.5/10

Fear of SleepHas a sense of building leads into a chorus which Julian shouts You're no Fun - his voice sounds great on the album. good song 7/10

15 minutesThis one has two segments, starts with a nice melodic is this it(the song) type section and moves into a more energetic finish. I like this 8/10

Ize Of The WorldThis is one of the albums highlights, great song. reminds of Trying your luck (my favorite Strokes song), they both have really good moods. 8.5/10

Evening SunA slower track, I like it's calm atmosphere. 7/10

Red LightThis is classic Strokes, quirky vocals, interesting guitar melodys and some great drum breats. Good finish to the album 8/10

Overall I enjoyed this album and I'm going to listen to it a lot, before I see them live in a months time. I would give it an 7.5-8/10, if only the less good tracks could match up to some brilliant standout tracks.

edit: That was much longer than I intended.

Aeaon 01-02-2006 06:53 PM

It's coming out tomorrow.

But I already got the first one today.

Sound Boy 01-02-2006 07:37 PM
