Help me on my post-rock journey

These are albums I love:
Mono - Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined
Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People and/or Young Team
Explosions In The Sky - The Rescue
Mum - Finally We Are No One (if you haven't already)
Sigur Ros - all of their albums
Explosions In The Sky - all of their albums

These are albums I like:
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
Do Make Say Think - & Yet & Yet (specifically the song Chinatown)
A Silver Mount Zion - Born Into Trouble As Sparks Fly Upwards
The Books - Lost and Safe

Am I missing out anything major? I wish I had more post-rock that I really loved, but I find so much of it awfully boring.

robot 10-22-2005 07:13 AM

You could try a similiar genre, noise rock. Get some Black Dice.

StaticSynth 10-22-2005 07:17 AM

You definitely need to check out Tortoise if you haven't already.

3rdplanet 10-22-2005 07:20 AM

I'll throw these two names at you; Port Royal, 65daysofstatic.

Tomahawk 10-22-2005 07:30 AM

Slint - Spiderland
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock (I'm not a big fan of this, but supposedly it's a post-rock "essential")

br3ad_man 10-22-2005 07:33 AM

Yeah I've got those two. I don't consider Slint post-rock and I don't really like the Talk Talk album.

something vague 10-22-2005 08:11 AM

Young Team is the best post-rock album. I don't really know what you're missing, because I'm too poor to buy anything.

Wanker 10-22-2005 08:15 AM

What's that Explosions in the Sky album you listed? I never heard of it.. :-/

If I were to name an album, I'd say Hex by Bark Psychosis. But you should check out the other Do Make Say Think albums and any M83... yet I vaguely recall you listening to/liking M83 before.

robot 10-22-2005 08:17 AM

I'm pretty sure The Rescue is the Travels in Constants album.

Wanker 10-22-2005 08:25 AM
I'm pretty sure The Rescue is the Travels in Constants album.
Ohhh... I just knew it as Travels In Constant. Thanks for clearing it up :)

JonM 10-22-2005 08:59 AM

I'd say Tortoise is the crucial gap you've got to fill here. They sort of define the sound for everybody else.

Tortoise is one gap, Slint is the other. I think Bark Psychosis is another small gap too, though.

edit: Talk Talk (Laughing Stock, more specifically) is probably more important than Tortoise though.

JonM 10-22-2005 09:10 AM

Too true.

Clunge 10-22-2005 09:14 AM

Amplifier - Amplifier
Oceansize - Effloresce, Music For Nurses

Go get now.

biografiend 10-22-2005 10:06 AM

Efterklang - Tripper
Jaga Jazzist - A Livingroom Hush and/or What We Must
Unwed Sailor - The Faithful Anchor

If you like M83 and Mum, you will enjoy Efterklang. It is electronic post-rock/IDM (i think?), with a male and female vocalist. They are realllly nice. Try the songs "Foetus", "Collecting Shields", "Prey and Predator"

Jaga Jazzist is sort of jazzy post-rock featuring a tenor sax, trumpet, and bass clarinet among other instruments. What We Must is a little more.....progressive than A Livingroom Hush, but they are both really good. Checkout the songs "All I Know is Tonight" and "Olso Skyline"

Unwed Sailor is similar to Explosions in the Sky. The bassist was once in Pedro the Lion or something. I saw them in concert over the summer and they were amazing. Check out the song "In The Presence of Thrones" or "Ruby's Wishes"

Luxor 10-22-2005 10:58 AM

Booerns... too many post-rock threads.

Bukowski 10-22-2005 11:01 AM

Gastr Del Sol is pretty good. I recommend the album Camoufleur.

CarnageFairy 10-22-2005 01:48 PM

Get Feel Good Lost by Broken Social Scene.

Zmev 10-22-2005 03:43 PM

Run Return - Metro North

TalkingHead 10-22-2005 03:57 PM

You need Rodan - Rusty, Mono - One More Step And You Die and Xinisupreme - Murder License.

Happymeal 10-22-2005 04:46 PM
You need Rodan - Rusty
I second that since you're a Slint fan, though it's a bit more aggressive. Also try Dreamend's As if by Ghosts. It's EitS style dramatic post rock with vocals, in easily digestable amounts(no 10 minute songs here)

I heard a Tortoise song once, "Glass Museum". I didn't find it very interesting so I didn't bother with them further. I guess I will now.

I would have said Efterklang had something very Sigur Ros about them, good recommendation however.

bleep_bloop 10-22-2005 11:28 PM

is post-rock the same as prog-rock?

Wanker 10-23-2005 01:36 AM
is post-rock the same as prog-rock?
Somewhat, but at the same time, not at all.

xizoesira 10-23-2005 01:42 AM
is post-rock the same as prog-rock?
Much different.

I don't know if Rachel's counts as post rock, but if they do I thumbs up to them.

I guess they'd be more neo classical though.

Esmerine is another one.

Interstate 10-25-2005 01:07 PM
Efterklang - Tripper
I've seen that on ebay but the only copy available is £10 ($18) (Buy-it-now including posting and packaging). Is it worth getting it if I haven't heard any of the songs, because my internet is crap at the moment and it would take me ages just to download a song (if I could find one). I love the stuff you mentioned so I was wondering if it was worth spending that much money.

Zmev 10-25-2005 01:23 PM

Did you listen to Run Return yet?

Wanker 10-25-2005 01:37 PM
I don't know if Rachel's counts as post rock, but if they do I thumbs up to them.

I find Rachel's to almost be an expressionist kind of music with classical elements. Mostly because one of their albums is almost all about Egon Schiele, the famous expressionist painter.

br3ad_man 10-26-2005 01:59 AM
Did you listen to Run Return yet?
Yeah, it was ok. It sounded really processed and was all around a bit boring, but not bad.
