Permanent Solution 03-02-2005 10:35 PM

I bought Hemishperes, Signals and 2112 this month. Love Rush.

ArC 03-02-2005 10:35 PM

I prefer Moving Pictures

thunderzstruck 03-02-2005 10:37 PM

2112 is a msterpeice (the song) But the albums pretty good too

132WalrusesInMexico 03-02-2005 10:37 PM

I'm a huge rush fan, i have 17 of their albums.

thunderzstruck 03-02-2005 10:37 PM

Anyone know if Rush is going on tour sometime soon? I missed them last time

132WalrusesInMexico 03-02-2005 10:38 PM

I heard that they're not touring anymore because neil's shoulder isn't healing well from the last tour, but it could be a rumor.

thunderzstruck 03-02-2005 10:39 PM

Hopefully! I always wanted to see them and my dad said he would take me if they did.

132WalrusesInMexico 03-02-2005 10:39 PM

Yeah, they put a good show on, i've seen them on vapor trails and their 30th anniv. tour.

6stringslinger 03-02-2005 10:40 PM

3 Musical Geniuses = Rush

I saw Rush on thier Power Windows Tour . Neil Peart best drummer ever PERIOD.

I also saw them on the tour when they had the song "Time Stands Still" cant remember the name of the album or tour(smoked way too much weed back then).

thunderzstruck 03-02-2005 10:42 PM

I viewed Rush in Rio and that made me want to see them REALLY bad!

newWorld 03-02-2005 11:43 PM

I love Rush. I think everything from Fly by Night to Signals is at least awesome. Hemispheres is probably my favourite, but Farewell, MP, and Permanent Waves come close.

AvantGardeMercenary 03-03-2005 01:39 AM

Rush is like... Dream Theater. They don't focus enough on songwriting. It's all wankery in it's own respect.

They wish they were King Crimson.

Rush is so much better than Dream Theater. Dream Theater has pointless 15 minute keyboard solos. Rush is catchy and overall better music.

AvantGardeMercenary 03-03-2005 04:17 AM

Oh and Geddy Lee's singing is the most annoying sound I've ever heard.

Neil Pert is overrated, much like Portnoy. They both wish they were Bruford. If they don't they ought to.

I don't have much to say about Alex Lifeson.

As a band... Ugh it's all just far too overrated. I can't stand it.

Nah, I disagree. Well maybe you're talking about the music.. I admit a lot of songs do sound the same a little.. but still great songs.. but if you're talking about the lyrical aspect of the songwriting.. I think Neil is such a great lyricist, I don't know how someone can say he's not. But it's all good. :)

And great to see a Rush thread. :) Rush is the band that got me into traveling all over the place for concerts. And who else puts on a 3-hour show with intermission? I think we're lucky to still have them around.

Btw what happened to Neil's shoulder?

Six Foot Revolver 03-03-2005 04:26 AM

Rush are good. Good are Rush

Deth 03-03-2005 09:25 AM

One of the greatest bands of all time. Favorite songs include 2112, Tom Saywer, Freewill and the Spirit of Radio.

All hail at the throne of Geddy Lee! (I play bass.)

That's by far the most ignorant opinion on Rush I have ever read.

Ever.

Rush wrote the book on radio hooks in arena and FM rock. A hit single or two every album up to Distant Early Warning. King Crimson nor Dream Theater can claim such a feat.

Dream Theater are so overeducated and overskilled it's nauseating. King Crimson are egomaniacal and self indulgent. Rush maybe a bit self endulgant, but they poke fun at that all the time, especially live, and as well in their music. No band stuck to their guns longer than Rush.

"All this machinery making modern music can still be open-hearted.
Not so coldly charted, tt's really just a question of your honesty, yeah,
Your honesty!
One likes to believe in the freedom of music,
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
Shatter the illusion of integrity."

Rush are and always will be one of the greatest bands ever for melding brilliant musicianship with radio presence. No other band has ever done the same thing for so long.

I love them a great deal, and respect folks who hate them, even if it is the simple fact that they can't get over Geddy's voice.

kas_ofi 03-03-2005 10:16 AM

Well what can i really say about this band... My favourite prog-rock band! I own 10 albums of their discography and i want to buy them all! I wish i could see them live once but i dont think they will ever come to Greece :-(
My favourite albums are:
1.A farewell to kings
2.Permanent waves
3.Moving Pictures or 2112

I have everything up to Moving Pictures (and Rush in Rio). What do you suggest to buy next?
P.S. I adore Alex's guitar playing!

BassMasterMike88 03-03-2005 12:09 PM

When Geddy Lee's your bass player your probably pretty awesome, i dont think his vocals are too good though.

PS: Moving Pictures is porbably my favorite Rush album.

definately not true. a lot of rush songs can be catchy and actually song-like, and they don't do 'wankery' stuff on the records - only live, unlike dream theater.

my fav. album's either moving pictures or signals. i don't know which song is better: subdivisions or red barchetta...

Geddy = greatest frontman and bassist ever

I couldn't disagree more. Dream Theater are so pompous that only other musicians can appreciate the music. Rush are musically competent and progressive without sacrificing accessibility. Never once did I hear a Rush song that I thought, "This would have been better if it were shorter."
Oh and Geddy Lee's singing is the most annoying sound I've ever heard.
Common complaint, but at least Geddy actually stays on key. More than can be said for some.
Neil Pert is overrated, much like Portnoy. They both wish they were Bruford. If they don't they ought to.
I don't think Peart is overrated at all. He is an exceptional drummer.
I don't have much to say about Alex Lifeson.

Okay, I'm starting to get the impression that you're just trying to make yourself sound smart. You're not doing a very good job.

Rush are the every-man's prog band. Their music has gone through four distinctive eras throughout their careers.

There was the 70's work which featured their larger epics and more unrefined songs. The 80's showed a shift into arena rock and more radio-friendly music that still managed to showcase incredible musical experimentation. The 90's was more stripped-down and jazzy. And now their new work which is more raw and haunting. This is a band that knows how to evolve.

Alex Lifeson is one of my guitar influences. His rhythm parts are just as much fun to play as his solos. And unlike some guitarists, he actually knows how to make good use of effects.

Why would a metal drummers want to sound like jazz? Bruford rocks, but there is no way either Portnoy or Peart are aspiring to recreate his sound.

Who's to say what's overrated?

I don't see why people bash King Crimson or Dream Theater. They both have fairly accessable material, and who's to say accessability is necessarilly better? Some musical brings me like nirvana, while others cast it away because they don't understand it. And just ask my indie rock firends; they love and I don't.

the harmonics in 'red barchetta' sounds so amazing... and playing the chorus of that song on guitar is so fun

Exactly. The styles are radically different. What this guy is asking for is homogeneity.

Well, personally I dislike Dream Theater because they seem too concerned with showing off their virtusoity and not making something appropriate to the song. I appreciate their talent, but their music gives off a very pompous vibe that rubs me the wrong way.

I never got that feeling from Rush. Their whole career is Neil Peart writing about something he thought was interesting and then Alex and Geddy taking their instruments and thinking "What would sound really cool in this song?"

In short, Dream Theater (to paraphrase Alexi Laiho) treat their music like a sport, in which they have to be better than everyone else. Whereas Rush treat their music like a game to see what kind of new and different stuff they can try on each album.

On a slight tangent, I saw them on the 30th anniversary tour. Shortly after intemission, Geddy was talking to the audience and said, "The biggest problem with going on tour is trying to decide on a set list. Especially when you have too **** many albums like us." The band as a whole just seem to have a very wry sense of humor about themselves.

kas_ofi 03-03-2005 01:45 PM

^they are happy persons and you can see that form their early lyrics. Cool fantasy lines. And really amazing performers as i can see from the Rush in Rio DVD. (...I want to see them live :upset: )

IAJP 03-03-2005 01:46 PM

Caress Of Steel is a ****ing masterpiece.
I honestly just came online to make a Rush thread.
I have a ****load of their albums, best prog band ever.
End of.

It's strange. They're not the most energetic showmen (especially since they're in their 50s now), but they have this infectious sense of happiness. They really enjoy playing up on stage and the audience picks up on it.

It's also amazing how they realize more so than many other bands that a concert isn't just an aural experience. They put on a kick-*** light show as well and try to throw in a little humor (i.e. the dryers).
