Hip-Hop Community, Rules and Essential Listening Thread
(Scroll down for Essentials List)
The Hip-Hop forum is attempting to be a source of actual discussion of music unlike most of sputnikmusic.com's forums. If you feel out of the loop check the stickied threads as they provide more information for people just getting into the genre. Please try to keep spamming to a minimum. Granted there is going to be a lot of discussion of awesome lyrics and great beats so extended discussions are encouraged just try to keep them somewhat on focus. Otherwise feel free to post about your favorite rap artists whether it be Freddie Foxxx or Dose One. Current Moderators: kingsoby1, pixiesfanyo, Wish Rules: 1. Discussion of Illmatic and 36 Chambers is solely reserved for the "what have you been listening to lately" thread. 2. No criticizing taste. You're welcome to say you don't like something... or to discuss why you don't like something... in fact we WANT you to discuss these things. But none of this "you're a backpacker lol" or "mainstream sux" jibber-jabber. It's played. 3. We don't care about crusaders trying to tell us about "real rap" or how all good rap is dead. This is a topic that only matters to people who don't know anything about the genre and we could really care less. Enough with the rap threads, wait nevermind its my choice to come to these threads and post my little newb opinion.
|
The other thread is apparently only about "new rap", which is retarded.
|
There should just be one thread, like this one and all rap discussion is put into that thread. It saves all these people constantly making the same thread over and over.
|
That was my intention in making this thread.

* - trolling, flaming, or any other kind of rap-hating is not condoned
And will get you banned, as per the rules of this subforum. I'm very much looking forward to the new Blackalicious album right now. That's my rap comment for today. |
My rap comment for the day:
I'm very much looking forward to the new Kanye West album. I don't think he can pull it off. Hmm. |
*Gets out crystal ball.*
The new Kanye will have three or four good songs. The rest of the album will consist of bad skits and cocksure rants about how he's the best rapper/producer/gynecologyst ever. It'll go double platinum. |

I think "Last Call" might be the worst thing recorded. Ever.

I meant that a thread that talked only about new rap was retarded because it closes down discussion for a lot of other different forms of rap. Shitstain. |

My favorite rappers -
Dr.Dre 50 Cent NWA Kanye West Sugarhill Gang Notorious BIG Snoop Dogg Kool Keith/Dr. Dooom/ Dr.Octogon Public Enemy The one thing I dont like/understand about rap is how a word that was used just 40-50 years ago to mentally and emotionally degrade black people, and used when they were lynching them, is thrown around constantly like its nothing these days, by members of their own race. Also, they get soo offended when white people say it, but they can use it all they want. |

What I've been listening to recently: In Alphabetical order. :p
Aesop Rock Beatnuts Big Daddy Kane Black Sheep Blackstar Common Deltron 3030 Dizzee Rascal Eminem (Marshall Mathers LP) Erik B. & Rakim King Geedorah Kwame Boy Genius Lords of the Underground Madvillain Mf Doom Mos Def early Nas Organized Konfusion Quasimoto Stereo Mc's Tag Team Ultramagnetic Mc's Viktor Vaughn |
As you can tell from my sn, I fancy myself a big Nas fan...even stuff like It Was Written and Nastradamus. I actually like all his stuff up til Streets Disciple.
Speaking of Mos Def, I got The New Danger and it's one of the worst albums I've ever listened to. I'm still getting used to Dizzee Rascal...his accent makes his stuff an adventure, imo. And Rakim, what can I say? The man is a legend. |
I fancy Nas's first album more than the rest. And as for Mos Def, I liked Black on Both Sides best.
And yes, Dizzee Rascal's accent by itself makes every song interesting. It's something new. And I loved his Bjork-like samples on Boy In Da Corner. I seriously only started getting seriously into hip hop like a week ago. hahaha. |
I'm getting into rap extremely slowly. There are some artists (namely Kanye and the Streets) who I obsessed over after first hearing them, there are others that I have difficultly liking but eventually grow on me (Common, Public Enemy), and then a whole slew of artists that just plain suck (50 Cent, Nelly).
But it's been an interesting experience so far and without MX I likely wouldn't listen to rap at all. edit: Dizzee's accent is awesome. |
Well, Nas's first album is flawless, so it's not uncommon to like it the best.
As for Dizzee, I really like the song "Fix Up Look Sharp", which to this day remains the second best song ever that samples Billy Squier's "The Big Beat" (the best being Jay-Z's "99 Problems"). |
Souls of Mischief is a dope group also. I hope you guys have heard their classic album "'93 to Infinity"?
|
I'm a really big fan of Definitive Jux record label. Mainly due to El-P's incredible abilities as a producer. And each person is lyrically incredible. Cannibal Ox, Mr Lif, Murs, Aesop Rock, The Perceptionists, RJD2, El-P, and others are all in Def Jux. They are just the most talented label in rap history as far as i'm concerned.
I also like some old school stuff, Nas, Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, EPMD, etc... I really LOVE Dead Prez's cd Lets Get Free, it's incredible. I listen to all types of rap if it's good, I even like Clipse's original album. |
Mekkalayakay you do know Viktor Vaughn, Madvillain and MF Doom are the same person?
|
I like some hip-hop....most of Eminem's lyrics on the Marshall Mathers LP are very, very well-written.
Kanye West is excellent as well. The Roots are a good band, too. ?uestlove is a great musician/producer. Wyclef Jean's song from Chappelle's Show was great, I'm looking for tabs for that song. So, in short, hip-hop and rap aren't all that bad! :thumb: |
Mekkalayakay you do know Viktor Vaughn, Madvillain and MF Doom are the same person?
Yup. :) Anybody like Busdriver? |
Hell yes.
I've been listening to a ton of underground rap lately. Sage Francis Demigodz Swollen Members Planet Asia Defari ...to name a few :-D |
Can someone reccomend me something similar to Public Enemy or NWA? :thumb:

Eazy E Too Short Eric B and Rakim Big Daddy Kane Gangstarr EPMD |
What do people think is the best Buck 65 album?
|
I've got a decent rap collection...my favorites are almost all Outkast, Nelly - Country Grammar, all of The Roots and pretty much anyone with okayplayer, Michael Franti & Spearhead - Stay Human is an awesome album, and pretty much all of my other favorites have been mentioned in this thread. I don't like hip-hop nearly as much as I used to but Michael Franti has rejuvenated my interest.
