Thast pretty sick.

I justed missed the 50 Cent show. I didnt have enough money to grab tickets, but I would have LOVED to gone. Canada was being mean and didnt let Olivia, Tony Yayo or Young Buck into the country for the show.

I can assure you that ODB won't be there.

gregulus 01-04-2006 03:52 PM

I don't know much about rap, but from what I've heard, some of my favorites are Atmosphere, Dr. Octagon, Deltron 3030, Nas, and I loved Jay-Z's black album. I would love to get more rap and hip-hop, though.

Nope.

ODB (who I always assumed was the most [in]famous member, but I guess I was wrong) died a few years ago.
I didn't say hip hop = soul sample, I said it = SOULFUL beats. For instance, Limp Bizkit(sp?) is not considered hip hop; they're a type of rock band because they have no soul. Mere rapping does not a hip hop album make, hip hop requires soul. I can name you plenty of songs that have sampled non-soul songs that are still "soulful" (funk and jazz are clearly soulful genres but hip hop has also transformed less soulful rock and pop tunes.)

Examples:

KRS One, Criminal Minded (with a sample of Hey Jude by the Beatles)
De La Soul, Dog Eat Dog (with a sample of Peaceful Sundown by the Jan Hammer Group)
Jay Z, Hard Knock Life (with a sample of the same title from from the Annie Musical)

...just to name a few more popular ones. They all use pop-y samples but clearly have a "soulful" sound.

Not only did I do my homework, but I'll be offering tutoring sessions after school if you're interested.
Alright, I clearly misunderstood you, but still, I think there's LOTS of soulless beats in hiphop, but I still consider it hiphop (that mostly goes up for bad hiphop, although there is underground stuff which doesn't have any soul either).

KineticBeats 01-05-2006 02:08 PM

good question, it seems this whole site is based on rock music and its sub-genres, they need to open up a lot more imo, there's so much out there, btw not dissing rock in any way, it'd just be nice if they had more categories, that's one of the reasons why i stick to the "other forum" every once in awhile you'll get a breakthrough, but other than that it's also part of the reason i don't frequent much

Atmosphere's Overcast is one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time IMHO.

She´s talking about the difference between "art" and "product".You´re talking about genre classifications.

Two different topics.

slashjunior 01-07-2006 01:51 AM

Wouldn't it be better if this was made a sticky? Rap seems very popular now, so it would make sense.

Ve Das 01-07-2006 05:01 AM

It doesn´t have to be,it´s supporting itself just fine :)

This site pretty much represents it's members. If we hip hop heads want hip hop to get more exposure here, we need to provide it. The people here seem really open to new music all we have to do is introduce them. It is what we make it.

Tyler 01-09-2006 01:00 AM

I cant wait for Vakill's new album. He's really one of the bright new hopes in hip hop

Ve Das 01-09-2006 11:53 AM
The people here seem really open to new music
 You have NOT seen the black metal/death heads threads in the R&M forum, aye?
Then again,it´s only a few, very vocal, "elitists"(OK,I´m one of them actual elitists, but as I listen to pretty much every genre,I can safely say I´m not "close-minded" ;-) )

Anyways, speakin of hippety hop, anybody know what off NWA to get after Straight Outta Compton?

not true, people have already mentioned and suggested a hip hop sub-category and still nothing, plus like Ve Das said i'm open to all kinds of music and not close minded which means its not just hip hop i'm after as well but everything really, i could make a huge list, but i know it'll never happen and there are other things on here that i don't care for so i guess you could say you won't really be seeing much of me :) and let me reiterate that i'm not dissing anything these are merely observations...oh and one more thing if it was to somehow be official that there is a hip hop sub-category i still wouldn't frequent much, like i said there are other things that come into play here, ok welp back on topic i don't want to stray away from it

Robert Crumb 01-11-2006 06:36 PM

I think the hype is pretty understandable to be honest. It's very accessible music, easily distinguishable from other mainstream acts, and it's quality work from an objective, "quality production is quality production" standpoint. Actually artistic quality or innovation have little to do with any kind of hype.

At the same level, I think Kanye's charisma both on record and in interviews, on TV, where ever the public eye can catch him, the charisma and cockiness are notable. They help, I'd say. And he knows what he's doing, from a conscious publicity standpoint. He knows how to work the public curiosity. Any pop artists worth their salt ought to be able to. But to a degree, it seems a little like the Colin Powell effect. "He speaks so well, he's so well spoken!" Or at least, he's not frightening. As opposed to if, say, 50 Cent acted as Kanye does. But then again, 50 Cent has the charisma of a pack of Ritz Crackers, so it really doesn't matter what he says.

Bartender 01-11-2006 07:11 PM

Don't know. Pack of Ritz crackers can hold my attention quite well.

He's mushmouthed, hotheaded, a little obnoxious, and practically insane.

gangstalicious 01-12-2006 07:52 PM

First off, nice Boondocks reference Illmatic. Secondly, does anyone listen to MF Doom? I like him because his rhymes are a lot more intelligent and clever than most of today's mainstream rap. Check out Operation Doomsday.

Ve Das 01-13-2006 02:50 PM

I´ve heard him.Not my cup o tea, though,as his beats don´t pack quite the punch I like in my music.I´m more partial to stuff like Turbo B or even,OMG!, MC Hammer.

Robert Crumb 01-14-2006 02:33 PM
He's mushmouthed, hotheaded, a little obnoxious, and practically insane.
Absolutely true. But people still worship him. I wish I was critically acclaimed so I could act like an ass all the time.

Anyone looking forward to any new albums this year? The 2006 thing in alt/indie got me thinking. I'm curious about the J Dilla Donuts thing, should be some nice instrumentals. Plus all the other stuff.

Smackers 01-14-2006 05:55 PM

I am being blown away by Dälek right now. This is amazing.

I just heard Common - Electric Circus, and it is very, very good. I like it a lot more then Be.
