just got this album. i was a big fan of Tripses so i thought id check out some of their older albums. this one imo is better than Tripsis and it one hell of an album. their mix of hardcore, progressive metal, and sludge is one of a kind. this album just hits you in the face and it doesnt stop (until the album stops). if youre a fan of Tripsis, i highly recommend you get this one. the production is similar but this one is a bit more rough (but better) |

This is on of my favorite albums ive ever heard. it has great, clever lyrics combined with blues and heavy riffs. the vocals are very gritty and deep. they dont vary much throughout the album but they are good enough to enjoy. the guitars are very bluesy and the solos are mixed greatly without being too complicated. the drums have jazzy fills and that work well with their keyboard. i highly recommend this album to anyone that likes rock.

Emily Jane White is a singer/songwriter who really put her heart and soul into her music. she doesnt really try to make her music too emotional but it has just the right amount of heartbreaking and dark lyrics to get the listener addicted. her guitar playing is superb and she takes on a few different styles. from standard acoustic, to johnny cash-like songs, to primitive folk ones. her voice captivates the audience by the sheer subtlety of it |

for any fan of Porcupine Tree, but with a more industrial influence...this band is for you. they create some awesome keyboard driven atmosphere with some added synth effects. the vocals dont necessarily sound like Wilson's but the style can be the same. the guitars are somewhat heavy at times, but are not used as much as the keyboard. all around this is a solid album and the only album from this band that are made up of some members of the "neo-progers" Arena. they also stole the english phone booth from PT's the Sky Moves Sideways |

If youre a fan of the band 3, then this is a must listen. it features Joey Eppard's unique guitar playing and superb songwriting. this is all acoustic but Eppards style adds something new to an acoustic album. his vocals are what you'd expect from him but a bit more laid back. theyre soothing and kind of bring joy to your ears. this album is hard to find but if you can get it you'll be rewarded with great acoustic/pop with an edge and brilliant songwriting. my favorite songs are all of them, there isnt really a weak song on this album. he also adds a different version of the song "Bramfatura" that was on 3's album Wake Pig, this time its called "Vinegar Hill". hope this gets more people to appreciate the greatness of Joey Eppard |

she is a talented artist and has an impressive voice. what keeps this from getting a 5 stars is that i feel she puts restrictions on her voice in some songs. theres moments where i feel she holds back for the sole purpose of making a more melancholy song. but other than that this album is stunning just as she is stunning |

i wasnt a huge fan of Satellite Bay but i knew they had potential. now after hearing this album they have confirmed by beliefs. this album is amazing. they improve in every aspect of their songwriting and theyve created an emotional and moving album. essentially a post-rock album, but they do have some heavy moments. also Jonas Renskse does superb vocal work (like always) on the song The Nearing Grave. kind of makes me wish there were vocals on more songs but all in all this album is a must hear and its a highlight of the year already |

WOW was the first word that came out of my mouth the first time i heard Rusty Cooley pull out a incredible solo and shred fest. he truly is one of the best guitarist i have ever heard. Outworld is only going to get better with their new singer. this whole album is full of amazing instrumentals and if you want to know what im talking about listen to the solo in The Never. they do a good job of including a keyboardist and mixing it in with the guitar shredding. these guys and symphony x are great power/prog metal bands |

Project Creation Dawn On Pyther |
a prog metal band out of portugal that consists of Hugo Flores of Sonic Pulsar, and female singer "Linx." they creat some great soundscapes with their use of keybords, flutes, violas, and multiple drum arrangements. they have a sci-fi appraoch thats mixed with both male and beautiful female singing. their guitarist can pull off some Symphony X-esque solos. if you are a fan of bands like Lacuna Coil or Nightwish but with a more progressive metal edge then you should check this out. their latest album Dawn on Pyther is not an album to miss. i can't stress enough the amount of emotion that the female vocalist possesses. she really gets the job done and has helped me branch into more female led metal bands. i wish there was a way to get more people to listen to this album while ignoring the fact that they are under ProgRock records (who are hated on this site) |

Sieges Even The Art of Navigating by the Stars |
one of the best progressive rock albums ive ever heard. genius songwriting with excellent musicianship. vocals are tight and fit the music well. they dont get too heavy very often but when they do they do it well. for instance the intro to The Weight starts off mellow then they break out a heavy riff that lead with a strong baseline, then they go right back to a mellow verse. the vocals at times sound like Freddy Mercury but just a little bit. drums are great, similar to Riverside with a mix of technicality like Rush. this album is quite a ride |
Sieges Even Paramount |
on par with their last album. every song is solid, but it's brought down a bit by Leftovers which goes on for far too long. they dont change much of their sound on this album, but they do go for a bit of a heavier approach. i love the melody on this album, they have always been good at that. WAaOC is a great opener and it lets you know what you are up for. great album by a terribly unappreciated progressive rock band |

Valravn (DK) Valravn |
this is a band from Denmark that mix Bjork-esque vocals (bjork is an influence on their myspace page) and traditional Denmark folk music. the vocalist, Anna Katrin Egilstr? (also plays the percussion, santur, sansula, samples), is just beautiful in every sense of the word. she can pull of some vocals that i thought only Bjork could do, but at the same time she has her own voice. the music itself could be a quality neo-folk album, but with her vocals its just even better. the other members play such instruments as the viola, flutes, jews'harps, mandola, hurdy gurdies, davul, frame drums, cajon, electronic and acoustic percussion, beats, sound manipulation and live electronics. so you can see that this 5 piece band is very talented and true to their homeland. get this album if you want something fresh and exiting with gorgeous vocals and multi-instrumental music. not to mention their live show is out of this world (from what ive seen on youtube). |
Valravn (DK) Koder på snor |
Vengeful The Omnipresent Curse |
this is one of the best death metal albums to come out this year if not the best. Vengeful has released an album thats both tight and aggressive. this is pure death metal that incorporates a bit of technicality without being a bunch of wankers. the riffs are heavy and the vocals will satisfy the death heads. the drums are amazing and the man behind the kit is a beast. theres solos here and there but their focus is crushing you with riffs. for a sophomore album these guys take it to the next level without having listeners slap "progressive" in front of death metal. they even finish the album off with a 20 minute song that is guaranteed to make you say, "holy fuck this was a good album!" get this album now as not enough people have listened to it |

3 (USA) Summercamp Nightmare |
3 are a rather unknown band for some reason, but theyre a band with much experience and talent. theyve been around for quite a long time and have two previous albums before this that are really hard to find. now with this album they take a lighter approach than seen in their 2005 realease Wake Pig. the vocals are much more calm and more on the spooky side. joey eppard who sings is also the main guitarist. he has a very unique style of play and you can hear how his style is like no other youve ever heard. i highly recommend this album to anyone. my favorite tracks are all of them!!! |
3 (USA) Paint By Number |
3 (USA) The End is Begun |
i think this album is pretty good. it mixes their heavier style found on Wake Pig and their original style found on Paint By Numbers and Eppards solo album. the middle of the album has some weeak and boring tracks but the beginning and end of the album are great. so far the song End is Begun might be their best song yet. Eppard displays his talent in all corners in this album...his singing (which i like) and his guitar playing. they utilize their electric guitarist a little more on this album by giving him some solos. the drumming by Gartdrumm is immense like usual. if you liked Wake Pig then definitely check this out |

American Hearts is a sad, soulful, uplifting, American, adventurous, depressing folk album. his voice covers all those adjectives. A.A. Bondy and his brother Scott come together to make this album theirs. they have a sound that many folk artists are having a hard time reaching. you can hear a Dylan influence in many of the songs but you also have a bit of johnny Cash and Gordon Lightfoot. this album will leave you feeling all the emotions A.A. conjured up |

Ass My Get Up and Go Just Got Up and Went |
i absolutely love this album. im thinking of giving it a 4.5 but not sure yet. this is a solo project of a Swedish guy named Andreas S?str? the album is made up of him playing his acoustic guitar with more emotion and story telling than i have ever heard before. i honestly can see this album being a soundtrack to a very earthly western movie or a movie about a lumberjack's lonely life. you have to wait until track 5 to hear any vocals but they fit nicely. the main focus of this album is his guitar so the vocals only are here to add a nice break from just the guitar. definitely in my top 10 (non-metal) albums of the year. in no way shape or form does this album remind you of an Ass, but at the same time i cant think of a better moniker for this Swedish man |

their best so far! i love every minute. seems like it has a longer lasting power than their previous two. plus Devin Townsend adds so much to the production. The physics of Fire's production was a little too clean and it hurt the raw aggression that was found on Terminate Damnation. Dev definitely brought that aggression back, but with more progression and technicality. they break away from the scream-sing-scream-sing formula they were heading towards. the scream on this are the best theyve done. awesome riffs. drums are great. i love the style of keys that Dev brought to the table. the second the album starts with Mountain of Souls, you can hear the style of keys that are present in many of Dev's solo albums. this came late in the year but theres no doubt this will be among my top 15 or 20 of 08. |

a pretty good progressive metal band. they wont get as heavy as Dream Theater orSymphony X but they manage to provide a lot melody and solid lead riffing and solos. vocals are a bit weak and keep this from getting a higher rating, but they are along the lines of a watered down version of Circus Maximus. songs are a bit long and tend to drag at points, but they are capable of changing it up when needed. they are not very known and in time i think they can develop into a proficient progressive metal band |

this album is freaking nuts! a blend of post-hardcore and mathcore with a tint of mike patton-esque vocals (the variety and spasticness of the vocals brings mike patton to mind). a really fun and chaotic listen. the songs bring enough variety so the album is just like a huge kick in the face where youre left braindead. for fans of Look What I Did will probably like this album |

Meg Baird and crew continue to make some of the best modern psychedelic folk. the guitars are ethereal and the drumming lays down the mesmerizing beats that get you stuck in the song. of course the focal point to any Espers albums are the beautiful and dreamlike vocals from Meg Baird. her voice is so smooth and relaxing, it almost distracts you from the instrumentals because you become so focused on her voice. but after a few listens you will learn the experience of this album is much more worth it if you can engulf your self with all the aspects of the album. if the vocals are all you find interesting (a shame if true) then i highly recommend getting Meg Baird's solo album for more stripped down folk |

this is a beautiful album. Frida is a singer/songwriter and piano player. she wrote this album for a dance performance called Pudel. you can def hear throughout the album that a lot of the piano melodies were written for dances, and her voice intertwines every footstep. her voice is calm yet playful. shes another Swedish singer that has gained some recognition. |

Anekke ftw. this and the new Solstafir have given 2009 an excellent start |

im surprised this has never been reviewed or even put on this site yet. i had to add them. this is a great album that mixes post-hardcore elements with a pop sensibility to it. the riffs can get heavy but then quiet down to simple pop/punk chord. the vocals are the main attraction. the singer has great range and he can change just as quick as the riffs do. there are some flaws but nothing that can bring this album down. i hope more people can get into them |

who the **** are Iron Thrones? oh i know! theyre an up and coming progressive metal band that absolutely blew me away upon first listen. this is a band that takes a lot of their influences and uses them to make their own sound. theres not one moment on this where it sounds like theyre just ripping bands off. for example, you can hear some Opeth-esque riffing throughout the album, but you can tell its their own sound. the vocals are mostly screamed/growled. sounds somewhat like a more controlled and smoother Tommy Rogers (from BTBAM). the drums are technical and very good. excellent fills and the album isnt swamped with blast beats. like i said the riffing is similar to Opeths but with a few more solos thrown in. the solos are SICK! theyre not fast for the sake of being fast. you can tell they took time to write them and they were placed perfectly. the bass playing is good and is audible. what else can i say about this band.....well i can say that they are here to make music and they know what they are doing. theyre young (i believe) but sound very mature in their songwriting. i highly recommend this album, its one of my favs of this year and very close to being a 4.5/5. i think many of you guys that were into In Mourning or a fan of prog metal that takes another step outside of the box should give this a shot. check out their last.fm page, theyre a bunch of really nice guys |

Kill the Romance Take Another Life |
kill the romance are new and upcoming band that play a style thats a mix of melodic death metal and hint of metalcore. their riffs are similar to bands like soilwork and in flames. drums are decent, but not as pounding as most death metal. their lead guitarists will throw in some small solos here and there with some good lead work. vocally is where they grabbed me, their screams are strong and similar to most melodic metal vocals. has some decent range...can go from raspy screams to more growlier screams. the clean singing which is used in almost every song sound a bit like dark tranquility at times, but rarely they can sound like a metalcore bands clean vocals. i highly suggest checking these guys out they have some potential. tresspasser and ghost white coma are my favorite tracks so far |

this album rocks my fucking socks off. LoL come from New Mexico and they blend stoner rock with psychadelica, heavy riffs, soaring vocals, thumping bass, and slick drumming. probably the coolest sounding album ive heard in a long time. theres also a neat little campfire acoustic song in the album thats chill and fuck. get this if you want some rock music that will kick you in the balls |

what can i say about this album or band. they only have three members: a drummer, a piano player, and a guy who screams. they have some similarities with The Pax Cecilia (often times sounding as if they ripped them off with some of the drum and piano sections). the screams are close to a lot of screamo bands, very emotional and painful sounding (not in a bad way). the piano is normally to create a beautiful atmosphere without getting too complicated or "classical". the drums arent technical but they are normally used to either aid the piano or add chaos to the vocals. if youre looking for a unique band than this is a good start |

this album is fucked up. it starts off with slow sludgy vocals and a slow riff with repetitive drumming. then after those vocals go away we are introduced to another style of vocals. these are a bit like Julie Chrsitmas' but this is a dude. the screams are frightening and just haunting. then we get some soft clean vocals that will scare the shit out of you. at this point there is just a single guitar tone slowly building up alongside the vocals. the sung vocals get a little bit more intense and mixes some screams in. "JUST ME MYSELF AND I AND THE WILL TO STAY OR TO CLIMB!!!!!" the music picks up a bit here and we get those sludgy vocals back. this part sounds similar to Neurosis but with some drone elements. the only downside to this album/song is that after this part it kinda drags with the repetitive drumming and wall of sound but the vocals and atmosphere make it one haunting song to sit through. i might add that this is just one song that is 39:26 minutes long. what i described was just the first 18 minutes. after that there is just a bunch of drone-esque stuff and sludgy doom drumming and vocals. this isnt something you can just throw on, you have to be in the mood for it. its the only way to really appreciate this song. i only would have wished that the clean/screamed vocals would have come back in the end and that there was some sort of climax in the end instead of in the beginning |

4 is a pretty good rating for this album. i love the musicianship on this album, and the vocals are pretty strong (with some black metal elements mixed in) but sound a bit forced at times. the drums are pounding, guitars are good and fit the melo-death style, but what i like the most is the synths and keys. they add a cool element that erases the potentially mediocre melo-death album it couldve been. |

The Sorrow Blessings From a Blackened Sky |
The Sorrow Origin of the Storm |
their debut Blessings From a Blackened Sky was a solid start for this Austrian metalcore band. their debut sounded a bit too much like Unearth, but i could tell that this band could overcome that comparison and become huge. well here comes their new album Origin of the Storm and it is one hell of an album. the vocals have vastly improved including more controlled raspier vocals. the Uneart-esque screams are still there but imo they actually sound better than Unearth and are a highlight of the album. the clean vocals add a nice touch. the guitars riff like no other, you will be headbanging throughout this whole album. another highlight of the album are the drums. they rip out double bass throughout, but not overdone. theres enough variance in the drumming to keep this from being lazy drumming. i know 4.5 for a metalcore album may be high but The Sorrow, Unearth, and As I Lay Dying are kicking some ass lately (im not counting the more elite from of metalcore: Converge, Misery Signals, 7A7P, Botch, etc). if youre tired of the boring metalcore poop that Killswitch Engage keep throwing up, then get this album! |

this is a great progressive heavy metal album. instrumentally they are pretty heavy and have lots of crushing riffs. they utilize the keyboard really well, switching off with the guitar in solos and often times leading into a riff. drumming is straight up but nothing special. vocals sound very heavy metalish from the 80's. but they are very good, has lots of control. they actually have some death metal growls here and there for emphasis. the only reason this isnt a 4.5 is that they have 2 or 3 bland songs that just dont go anywhere. i highly recommend this album and to get started listen to their songs Slipstream and Elusive |
