The excellent parts of Once aren't abundant; in fact, the album drags out in spots. Fortunately, the stronger points are truly engaging and hold up for multiple listens. As a whole, Once leaves an enjoyable but shaky impression which, despite having a couple of the band's best songs, does fall short of their expected quality after Oceanborn.

Once is excellent, it continued to show Nightwish as a forerunner of symphonic metal, with Tarja operatic vocals and the entire album carrying an epic feel. It is another great Nightwish album, they hadnt changed alot in their style though, but it had worked for them so far. This album also sports my favourite song by them; Nemo.

Overall, I'd say this is Nightwish's best album to date. It contains many of their greatest songs, most notably Ghost Love Score, Nemo, and Creek Mary's Blood, and though the other tracks may not stand out as classics, there isn't a single weak one among their number. Every aspect of Nightwish's style is well-represented, from the gritty metal riffs of Romanticide to the sweeping, grandiose orchestral arrangements of Ghost Love Score, to the mellow, moving passages of Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan. A must-have for any fan.

"Once i had a dream, and this is it" surely the best nighwish album ever, absolutely classic..
tuomas' work on the orchestration was flawless, and tarja's vocals seem much better taking a back seat.. this is the dream album for all goth kids for sure... with tastefully composed melodies, and tarja's solid vocals to back it up...
undoubtedly the best album I bought in recent years.. still listening to it a great deal.. its a pity tarja left the band.. but her influence in the band was beginning to wane anyways.. this album marked the perfect balance that should be present in all goth bands.
