4.0 excellent | Xenorazr | January 26th 17 | Brave Murder Day's unhinged cousin, a little less similar in structure but ultimately consistent with the entrancing melodies from before. I'd say go fetch a copy, but since it probably comes with any presently available copy of Brave Murder Day, you should be set.

0.0 | Skyline28 | March 16th 16 | And here I thought that Katatonia completely abandoned the sound forged on 'Brave Murder Day' after one release. 'Sounds of Decay' strays further into traditional death/doom territory than their full length masterpiece sounding a bit like a more sophisticated Paradise Lost during their 'Gothic' period but still has the hypnotic atmosphere that made 'Brave Murder Day' so special. If you liked that album and are hankering for more music in that vein check this EP out.

0.0 | Handyman003 | July 23rd 14 | By the time of 1997's Sounds of Decay EP, Sweden's Katatonia had almost entirely abandoned the slothful doom of their early days to embrace a driving, generally mid-paced style of death metal. Previewed a year earlier on the Brave Murder Day album, this newfound energy coincided with the temporary involvement of Opeth vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt, and effectively marked a transition period for the enduring Swedes that would eventually see them embrace goth metal a few years down the line. But for now, pure death offerings like "Nowhere," "At Last," and "Inside the Fall" retained the tried and true Cookie Monster vocal approach, while stacking ever more power chords within deepening layers of baleful guitar harmonies. And you know what, the death metal approach doesn't hurt. The closing "Untrue" is another matter, revisiting somber doom for perhaps the final time before the aforementioned evolution began in earnest.
