Ladies Center Stage On The Mic!
In no real order some the dopest female MC's and some of their best work. Although some of these ladies on the list graced us for only a minute they left a deep impression on hip hop. This is my sweet sixteen MC's! |
1 | MC Lyte 10% Dis
True hip hop icon, Lyte dropped classics like Paper Thin, Cha Cha Cha, Stop Look Listen & Cappuccino. It was 10% Dis in which she took the rap game and shook it up dissing not just females but anybody who stood in her way. |
2 | Salt N Pepa My Mic Sounds Nice
This trio took over the rap world with their style and game cutting hits like Push It, Let's Talk Bout Sex, and Gotta Man. Before these ladies hit the mainstream their initial single My Mic Sounds Nice off the Hot, Cool, Viscous rec clearly shows what they could bring to the table over a phat go-go beat. |
3 | Queen Latifah UNITY
Queen La burst on the scene with Wrath of My Madness, Ladies First and later the cool Just the Other Day but she repped the ladies and hip hop with UNITY. The opening line set it up "Who you callin' a bitch?!?" All Hail the Queen! |
4 | Lauryn Hill Ready or Not
Ms. Hill graced us with the amazing Miseducation of Lauryn Hill but I believe her work with the Fu-gees was amazing. Either singing Killing Me Softly or rhyming Fu-gee-la & the somewhat forgotten Nappy Heads she always stood out. When she spit "so while you're imitating Al Capone, I'll be Nina Simone, defacatin on your microphone" it was on. |
5 | Missy Elliott Pass the Dutch
Missy can drop some ass shakers thats for sure like Work It & Get Ur Freak On but Pass the Dutch showed all of her game. |
6 | Nicki Minaj Monster
Nicki lit up the mixtape scene and dropped verses on everyone and their mom's track before finally putting out the pretty good Pink Friday. Roman's Revenge hits hard, as do some her mixtape blasts but her verse on Kanyes Monster stole the show from Yeezy & Hov. Ladies bring you?re A game. |
7 | Lil' Kim Get Money
Kim has done a lot of work (& had a lot of work done) but I think her work on Get Money with Junior Mafia showed her off best. |
8 | Da Brat Funkdafied
Brat's work on Missy Elliotts Sock It 2 Me was serious but Funkdafied put her on the map. |
9 | Monie Love Monie In The Middle
Straight from the U.K. Monie Loves quick verses and wit showed the world the ladies were coming to stay. Monie In the Middle is what cleared the path. |
10 | Foxy Brown Get Me Home
This cool almost R&B jam is a guilty pleasure backed by Blackstreet makes you want to get Foxy home too. Hot Spot & Ain't No Nigga with Jay-Z were tight and she really held her own on the I Shot Ya' remix with LL Cool J. |
11 | Eve We On That Shit
Evee Eve rocked this with the Ruff Ryders |
12 | Roxanne Shante Go On Girl
Roxanne battled U.T.F.O. and answered the Roxanne,Roxanne with her own dis record but it was Go On Girl that put her on top. |
13 | Yo Yo It's a Man's World
Ice Cube put her on with this gem from his Amerikkka's Most Wanted album and Yo Yo held her own. |
14 | Nikki D Daddy's Little Girl
Over a phat sample of Suzanne Vegas "Toms Diner" Nicki D kicked true rhymes and made you nod your head to this. |
15 | Lady of Rage Afro Puffs
"I'm hittin MCs like...Hadouken!!" Lady of Rage killed this heater! |
16 | NonChalant 5 o'clock
Serious rhymes and beat beggin for the youngsters to listen. "5 o'clock in tha mornin, where you gonna be?" |
