Oh! Calcutta!
I'd always had a passing interest in the larry arms, but having been utterly hooked by "presenting the dancing robot" and "the rabbit and the rooster" from compilation/samplers, i figured it was time to get one of their albums, and i'm glad i did, because it's a fucking great album, kind of how i'd imagine alkaline trio would sound if they hadn't gotten famous (not that i don't like their newer stuff). but yeah, well chuffed with this one. | | 2 |  | My Chemical Romance
The Black Parade
i know they seem to be universally hated by most and adored by emo kids, but i've always quite liked MCR, and although i prefer their older style to the broadway-musical style they've used on this album, i still think this is a solid album, my favourite track being probably "the sharpest lives." | | 3 |  | Mad Caddies

I've always liked the Caddies, but they're one of those bands who i'd always seen myself as a fan of, without ever owning any of their albums. so, since they were all in my local CD store, i thought i'd reverse things and buy all of them (except "quality softcore" which they didnt have in stock). i can quite honestly say i think i've found a new favourite band, or at least joint favourite with a few elite others. consistently great songwriting, catchy as fuck, and better horn-work and variety of sound than most ska-punk bands. niiiice! | | 8 |  | Pendulum
Hold Your Colour
Pendulum are about the only dance/drum'n'bass band i can actually stand, they just seem that bit more catchier and varied in their beats/samples than most bands of their ilk. this was recommended by a mate, and was on offer for 3 quid, so i gave it a shot. not something i'd listen to a lot, but good for the odd spin if im the right mood nonetheless. | | 9 |  | In Flames

Subterranean EP
I needed to complete my In Flames collection, and the more i listen, the more this stuff sounds like early opeth, which is great, and im suprised to find it matches and in some cases, betters, their later work. fucking expensive though, obviously the tiny label they were released on has decided to fleece us In Flames fans, now that the band's famous. bastards! | | 11 | | Leatherface/Hot Water Music
BYO Split Series, Vol.1
I've had this reserved at my local record store for about six months, stemming from my renewed fascination with HWM after they split up, so i thought i'd finally go and buy it. the HWM stuff is, as you'd expect, fantastic, and the leatherface stuff is pretty good, if a little hard to adjust to at first (his vocals are fucking harsh). overall, an interesting listen, and great album. | | 12 | | Mendeed
Positive Metal Attitude
As far as i was aware, this was a tour-only mini-album, so i snapped it up as soon as i saw it in the shops. "this war will last forever" was one the the best thrash albums i've heard in recent times, not least for the great guitarwork, and this mini-album collects BBC live sessions of some of the highlights from that album, plus all the b-sides from the various EPs and singles connected with the album. quality british metal, these guys deserve to be more well known, can't wait for their new album! | | 13 | | SikTh
Flogging the Horses EP
Another limited edition EP, but what a fucking rip, the title track, as you'd expect is the album version, but two of the b-sides are just demos with different names (one of flogging the horses!!! - i.e. the same track, effectively twice on one 5-track EP!!!), one is a remix (which to be fair, isn't bad for a remix), and one is a complete reworking of "in this light" with alternate lyrics, which with it's emotional crescendos, and piano parts, is the highlight of the EP. if this was any more than the fiver i paid for it, i'd feel severely ripped off, but as im a bit of a completist, and it is SikTh after all, it was just about worth it. | | 14 |  | Lamb of God
Ashes of the Wake
My interest in LoG was passing at best until i saw them live at unholy alliance and was completely blown away - band of the night IMO, easily! so, i went out and bought sacrament, and was considerably impressed. then my mate (massive LoG/slayer/(insert any other thrash-orientated band that isn't metallica here) fan) said "wtf? 5riffs per song? what, do they think they're metallica now or something? get ashes of the wake, its way better!" i've got to say, as good as sacrament is, i have to agree that AOTW is better, this won't be leaving my cd changer for a while! | |
