07.04.10 | why do Australians (mostly, but also others) feel the need to distinguish bands hailing from Australia as 'Australian bands'?
Seriously, I don't get it and think it's a tad ridiculous. If a rapper is from Australia, he's an Australian rap artist, rather than just a rapper. More than any other country by far, nationality becomes SUCH a factor for them. Is it national pride, maybe? Like nothing against Davey, Vooligan, etc., but I don't understand why anyone concentrates so heavily on music from their native country... simply because it's from their native country. Maybe I'm missing something, but it also seems like the best bands from Australia often shed the 'Australian' label (Laura, love like..., Dead Can Dance, Red Paintings, etc.) while other bands basically rely on the label to survive, it seems (Karnivool, Cog, The Butterfly Effect, Dead Letter Circus, etc.)... I mean it's not that they're bad bands, but why the stupid label? Is it a shift in genre when music comes from Australia? Honestly, every time I hear 'Australian band' I think 'worse bands' simply because the term designates the music as something that needs like, a niche label, if that makes sense... you don't hear 'American rapper,' and you might hear things like the 'Scottish screamo band' but it never defines the band the way Australian bands seem to do.
I'm full of questions.
Someone help me. | Mordecai.

07.04.10 | yeah Im from Australia and I love it here, but our pride is ridiculous | tombits
07.04.10 | i think it's just an effort to try and cover up our generally shitty music scene. | Vooligan
07.04.10 | I dunno, i guess in some respects, Tom is right. It is an attempt to cover up our generally crappy scene. And yes, there are bands that do use it as a way of making them sound 'Unique' etc.
But you look at the other side of things, a lot of the smaller scale bands like TBE, Karnivool etc. When they start out the can only ever afford to tour in Australia, therefore you get bands all forming little niches because they never get exposed outside of Australia without some major backing. Main reason being is that Australia is so fucking far away from the larger music scenes (Europe/America) and hence expensive. So yeah, you are going to get bands labelling themselves as 'Australian' as an attempt to make themselves more unique in the world market.
And most will agree, the main example being alternative rock, is that Australian bands all have a similar sound that is somewhat a quality unique to Australia alone. (look at Dead Letter Circus, Karnivool, Cog, TBE etc) yeah, they're all from the same country, but they also have a pretty similar sound and you'll find most of the time that people who are into one of the band will be into all of them. Therefore you get people manufacturing the "Australian" genre, even though it might only be a group of bands that have a similar sound as opposed to just being from the same country.
As for me, the main reason why im into so many Aussie bands is because a) the music's decent, b) all of these decent bands tend to tour together, so its very easy to get embedded in the music scene as there is always someone touring with someone, so its easy to see a lot of bands, and cheaply.
Anyways, i guess theres really a few parts to it. Its an attempt by bands to differentiate themselves from similar bands in other parts of the world, (cos Australia is seen as a somewhat 'different' country from what i can gather - could be completely wrong) and also it just makes it easy to group similar sounding bands. And yeah, there's also the whole national pride thing. We seem to be a pretty proud nation overall. Although i'm probs in the minority when i say i disagree with a fair whack of things this country is doing/has done.
.
Bleh, end rant. Hopefully it makes sense. | kangaroopoo
07.04.10 | Australia has had inferiority complex since Federation 1901 as new, small country, far from US + UK. We've always lapped up any sport, music, film notoriety we can get overseas. OZ bands like Cog, DLC, Karnivool are quality bands and should be plauded.
Majority of music market is US + UK which reflects my music collection. Few OZ bands make it big o/s, so the ones who do succeed really stand out. Ultimately I listen to music I enjoy and it doesn't matter where it comes from. Mind you, 99.9% of my music has English lyrics.
Americans most patriotic of all, so shouldn't knock us for showing pride in our successes. US have infinite entertainment successes so they're a dime a dozen.
For a population of 22 million, Australia produce a lot of successes in many endeavours. Per capita, Australia is most successful sporting nation. | Douglas
