I do have one friend who I have successfully converted, but he has a one-in-a-million open-mindedness that wasn't a result of sputnik. |

So if something is "different" they're automatically turned off. I usually just tell people that I listen differently and value creativity over something that's instantly digestible and catchy on the surface. It's a nice way to say "you don't know anything about music and aren't artisticly inclined enough to comprehend truly good music and only have the brainpower to accept simple accessible melodies that have been recycled from successfully popular songs of the past". |

Hell, what the fuck constitutes "Good music?" If it's catchy? If it's never been done before? If it sounds good to your ears?? If it's popular? If it's different than what's popular? If a lot of other people say it's "good music?" How the hell can you tell?
So yeah...leave them to their Avenged Sevenfold or whatever, and keep up with your MBV. It's what I do: leave Sputnik to its Converge, and take my Mae and Bad Religion and be on my way. |

Then when I came to sputnik, I got all pissed because nobody liked fall out boy and all that stuff. Some of the very very very few bands that I liked that also received praise here I started listening to more, and then from there I started listening to more of the stuff here, and now I look back on that and think of how much of a fag I was. |

Because someone like handoman has listened to different types of music and has then reviewed fairly what is the best. His friends haven't heard better music or go into other types with a negative mindset, so they don't have anything to base their pre-existing tastes off of.
I think that at its core music is opinion-based, but there are certain music that just is better. It pisses me off when people(not you) that haven't heard any music other then overly accessible mainstream say that its only opinion-based when they really haven't listened to enough music themselves to judge. |

Sputnik is much more reliable b/c it's made up of a bunch of people that truly care and obsess over music and are always looking for the best of the best. The radio and mtv is run by producers whose job it is is to feed the masses with risk-free recycled crap that has little originallity but has already been they know will become popular cuz it sounds like the last huge hit. They aren't gonna waste their money on a creative original band that comes along with a sound that hasn't already been tested out on the listening community which is mostly made up of people who aren't out there looking for the best of the best but just want something that sounds like what everyone else is already listening to. Sorry for the rant, but music is subjective and objective and the objective aspects are what separates the Brokencydes from the Radioheads. |

I've heard Lil Wayne, Jack Johnson, The Fray, Maroon 5, and the likes... pretty extensively. I've also listened to Neutral Milk Hotel and Minus the Bear for hours on end. Friends of mine have never heard these bands. Therefore, even though it is ridiculous one person is right or wrong, I definitely hold the upper hand when it comes to judging u=music between us. |

well its impossible to listen to EVERYTHING out there, but the Sputnik community has a much broader taste and simply cares more about music then casual mainstream listeners, so they're more devoted and interested in finding what truly is the best music, opposed to being spoonfed another catchy tune that is usually similar to what is already heard.
and yes, Chad Kroeger is a brooding genious lines like "hey, you look better with something in your mouth." What Yotimi said about mainstream music is 100% correct, and Nickelback are proof. |

A lot of us are musicians, and a lot of us cant play anything not rated by the ESRB. Regardless, there are a shit ton of people out there who know a shit ton about music and aren't wasting their time arguing about it on the internet.
I mean, there's a reason that our highest rated albums skew into niche genres...we're a self selecting bunch. Mostly teens to twenties, mostly male, mostly not on the football team...at the end of the day, who really wants to be the douchebag that forces people to shut off their crappy music...because thats exactly what you'll sound like...a douchebag |

As for recs, if you're looking for something that isn't a "Sputnik Darling" band that fits in with your list, you might try Starflyer 59. They're a Dream Pop/Shoegaze band on Tooth & Nail records. I'd start with either 'Talking Voice vs. Singing Voice' or 'Old' to get you into them.
There's been a bit of attention drawn to them lately, so I'm trying to use the momentum ;-). |
