04.01.22 | Crazy how far we've gotten already. It's flown by. Friday's last Mercury Tree rec wasn't my fav, but hopefully this one suits me more |

04.01.22 | It seems I was right. I expected that since the first minute. So, I knew, you knew.
Now, seriously, I expect this will be another great journey. For who are interested and have some time, be my guest to read my review about A Drop Of Light. Maybe it can help you to better understand the project.
Good week for everybody and good luck to Friday's album too. I'm sure that it will be great too, if it's in the same vein of Permutations. |
Jethro42
04.01.22 | @bgillesp, yes time flies when we have fun. And about Spidermilk, it's more consistent and ''accessible'' |
Divaman
04.01.22 | Looks like fun. |

04.01.22 | @e21, Permutations flies high and is more chaotic. Spidermilk is darker. |

04.02.22 | That's really nice. Cool overdubs and vocal harmonies. I asked myself if he would add the rough final. |
Jethro42
04.02.22 | Spidermilk is really punchy...really sexy!
I also like the sustained darkness of Drop of Light. Only a drop. |
Sabrutin
04.03.22 | Oh I remember 2! I haven't actually heard it but the frontman was there when I went to see La coscienza di zeno live and he let us hear a couple snippets of the album (there wasn't a band with him, he just talked about it).
That said I'm starting with 1 and the first song is a promising start |
Jethro42
04.03.22 | What a coincidence! The bassman Johan Brand appeared in a progressive rock chatting group on Facebook. He presented A Drop Of Light there, we chatted a few minutes with some other users, talking about his album. He asked me to be his friend on Facebook, and for some reason, I refused. |
kalkwiese
04.04.22 | After one listen I prefer Spidermilk
2 was very dark and abstract, it's impossible to absorb in one sitting |
Jethro42
04.04.22 | Yes, 2 is rather cold and soulless. Would be better if the 18 min opener was more accessible, to ease the experience. The rest is more ''memorable'', easier to tame. Album is a grower. |
porcupinetheater
04.04.22 | Listened to Spidermilk awhile back and remember really digging it, excited to revisit! |
bgillesp
04.04.22 | I've listened to both but haven't been able to pay a ton of attention to them yet. In the last couple weeks of my semester in medical school, and we have a bunch of exams coming, so its hard to focus on challenging music like these 2 albums |
Divaman
04.05.22 | Priorities, bgillesp, priorities! The procedures you're learning now in medical school can't be THAT important. |

04.05.22 | "He asked me to be his friend on Facebook, and for some reason, I refused."
Well that was an anticlimactic end! |
Donchivo
04.05.22 | amazed by first spins of both, this will be a tough one to score.
I have no idea what microtonal is, but I don't find Mercury Tree cacophonic... it#s no tnoisy and only slightly dissonant. But it has very interesting instrumentations and details.
All Traps On Earth is amazing me with the atmosphere, gloominess and density, something brooding and also with its instrumental intensity. I wouldn't call it soulless, but cold, yeah! |
e210013
04.05.22 | Since I already knew one of the albums and I have no doubts, I can vote earlier this journey. So, after l have heard Spidermilk 4 times and did one more spin on A Drop Of Light, here are my thoughts.
The Mercury Tree - Spidermilk
I agree with Friday. This is an album with some King Crimson’s influence. It also reminds me Porcupine Tree at times. I knew already the band due to Permutations, courtesy of Friday too in another tournament. I also agree with Jethro. Permutations is more chaotic and Spidermilk is darker. Still, maybe I prefer Permutations. However, both are two very good albums. It ratifies the high quality of the band.
All Traps On Earth - A Drop Of Light
This is a complex and avant-garde album in King Crimson’s vein, a dark version of Red with a Nordic taste. This isn’t only due to the use of Mellotron but also due the ambience all over the album. It has also some operatic vocals in the Zeuhl style. This is a true classic album in a modern way. Some may say it’s a bit cold and too technical. I don’t think so. This is amazing music well written and performed.
Spidermilk rated with 4.0.
A Drop Of Light rated with 4.5.
Spidermilk is probably more accessible than A Drop Of Light. But I’m not saying that Spidermilk isn’t complex. Both are complex in their own way. Both are two dark albums too. But, in the moment of choose I must go with A Drop Of Light. I didn’t choose it because it’s my knight but because I prefer it. It’s more in my prog vein. It reinforces what I wrote sometimes. For me, the best prog made nowadays is in Italy and in the Nordic countries. The album of Jethro and mine are two great examples of that, despite the differences between both. |
Friday13th
04.05.22 | @e21 glad you liked Spidermilk. I need to listen to A Drop of Light again before deciding. I will likely be in the same boat of enjoying yours a lot but missing the tall order of overthrowing my personal pick. I remember listening to Spidermilk three years ago on the day it was released and being mesmerized. |
SharkTooth
04.05.22 | I really liked 1, would prob give it a 4 |
e210013
04.05.22 | @ Friday
Yeah, it's a difficult choice. Both are two great proposals, very modern and unconventionals, somehow. But I think Spidermilk is less cohesive than Permutations. But to have a more precise opinion I need to check again Permutations. You know, I never listened to that album again since that tournament. Still, I think it's all a matter of taste. Both The Mercury Tree albums are equaly good in its difference. |
bnelso55
04.05.22 | I'm going to have to give both of these some extra listening this week. These are excellent. |

04.05.22 | I'm going to give them both another listen, but I'm 99% sure who I'm going to vote for. |

04.05.22 | @Sabrutin, I had my good reasons at that time. Today I would accept his invitation.
@Friday and e21, I know very well both of your entries. Donchivo nailed them. I already have my preference. I just have to justify my choice. Will give each another listen, before giving my verdict. |

04.05.22 | right now I think I'm feeling 1 more, I'm going to put my vote for Mercury Tree |
Jethro42
04.05.22 | A Drop Of Light is dark, but well done dark. It's really a grower, but a very slow grower. With each listens, I discover new details I never perceived before. It's an homogeneous work like if it was one only epic song. It becomes really harmonious with time. There are multitude of instruments that manage to pierce that somber atmosphere. The operatic vocals and mellotron soften and warms it. I'm a sucker for the Anglagardish vibes.
Spidermilk is great, but it provides too much information. The alternance of soft/heavy makes me getting lost. Music is so dissonant and jerky, I'm getting out of breath. Out of the two, I find here the best moments, but as a whole, it's difficult to follow. The Crimsonian vibes are good to hear. ''I'll Pay'' is such a good song. Overall, I tend to prefer the heavy passages.
I see me return more to A Drop Of Light. ''First Step'' is the best two minute song I've ever heard. Here's my tip; Start to the second song onward, and come back to the opener song at the end.
I'm votin A Drop Of Light. |

e210013
04.06.22 | I agree with what you wrote Jethro. I also think the alternations between soft and heavy disconnect a bit the album and I also prefer the heavy parts too. Is why I said that probabbly I prefer Permutations. Anyway the album sounds great to me.
About A Drop Of Light I feel the same as you. I remember that when I knew this was a project close to Anglagard and I saw so high ratings in several prog sites, I didn't rest until I checked the album soon as I could. You know that I'm a huge fan of Anglagard too. But, I remenber that I was a bit disapointed at the time with it. I thought it was an overrated album. However, with the sucessive listenings, and I did many, I changed my opinion. I was wrong and they were right. As you mentioned, the album as so small details due to the varied instrumentation all over it that always I listen to it I discover some new more ones. But, what impresses me most is the cohesivity all over the album making of it almost a single piece of music with an amazing orchestration. As a whole, this is for me an amazing work. Isn't properly Anglagard, which is great to me. It has its own spirit and personality. Besides, we really didn't need a clone of Anglagard. |

04.06.22 | So,
Mercury Tree is an interesting avant-prog take, those microtonal lines are quite a thing, but do not think the record is engaging at all, it drags a bit around the same ideas. good album, but was expecting more. On the other hand, A Drop of Light is full of landscapes just beautifully orchestrated, it brings together those 70's prog keyboards with modern avant-prog sound. really enjoyed this one, it's one of the strongest knights here.

04.07.22 | A Drop of Light is a great album. It’s certainly up my alley with the Crimsonesque style that made Anglagard so much fun, but with some Zeuhl and avant-prog/RIO in the mix. But Spidermilk simply operates on a different playing field in my mind.
Mercury Tree is an original band that cannot be pigeon-holed just just a progressive rock band with the usual suspects of influences. Their approach and microtonal harmonic palette sets them apart. There is no rock band that does what they do, period. They just happen to be prog as well. The fact that their music is even remotely accessible is basically a miracle considering the alien, uncharted chords and harmonies they use on this album. Not surprisingly, my vote goes to Spidermilk. |
Sabrutin
04.07.22 | I agree, I've got to hand it too to Spidermilk's weirdly tuned "alt prog" for making it work and be even catchy in the process.
Both quality albums though. |
Divaman
04.07.22 | I'm gonna be honest here. With apologies to my friend Friday, I just don't like The Mercury Tree. I didn't like their last album, and I don't like this one. Their music is so deliberately sour that it doesn't matter to me how complex and well thought out it is, I just don't enjoy listening to it.
While All Traps on Earth isn't a total win for me, I like it more than not. I don't hear it as dark as much as very sci-fi. There are parts that sound a bit like Chick Corea, and those are the parts that don't totally work for me. But overall, I think this is a pretty strong LP, and one I look forward to re-listening to.
This vote was an easy one for me. I vote for All Traps On Earth. |
Donchivo
04.07.22 | 'Sometimes, the more we listen to both albums, the more undecided we get. It's my case anyway.'

Haha I seriously hope more spins will help, as they are sitting on a high tie for me. Both easily in the top 5 of contestants so far for me. Up there with Mezquita, Circus |
Friday13th
04.07.22 | Divaman, that's totally fine. I knew I was not picking a sure-fire hit. At least you gave it a shot.
I just wouldn't say Mercury Tree is deliberately sour, though "knowingly sour" might be fair. They're trying to creatively make something beautiful out of something foreign and inherently difficult. |
Divaman
04.07.22 | You know how it is. Some music just hits you wrong, and that's how I feel about those guys. |
Jethro42
04.07.22 | @Friday, I couldn't see another one than All Traps On Earth to match yours up. It hurts me so much to imagine one of these eliminated. Both are original and eccentric, and both deserve to win. I was by a hair to vote for Spidermilk. A Drop Of Light is more of my style, and I'm more used to it (comfort zone?). For Spidermilk, I like how the vocals serve as an instrument. But first and foremost, their guitar tone. I also like their heaviness side. Do you know Virus (NO)? Their guitar tone and way of playing are pretty similar;

04.08.22 | Some first thoughts on the albums.
Spidermilk is truly innovative in the melody-composing domain, although I would like to see them experiment in other fields as well (not as much on the song-structure, as on the vocals, drumming, etc.) Now, the experimentation is very one sided, HOWEVER it is still fresh and stelarly executed. Their take on alt-prog reminded me the dynamic output of bands like Rishloo and Fair to Midland, even if their sounds are barely comparable. The microtonality towards the end brought to mind a specific album by a very spicific and prolific band that rhymes with ''blizzard''.
All Traps on Earth's A Drop of Light is very dark, and the comparisons to King Crimson are apparent. However, the unorthodox passages and moods, along with the operatic female vocals give it a certain zeuhl vibe I cannot brush off. Pristinely produced, it shines on its more abstract and fierce moments, and loses me when it tries to be more ''atmospheric'' and mellow. The horns on the second track rule ahrd. Nothing you've never heard before, but so damn well executed, it's a crime.
Still haven't decided which should continue, although I do feel like Spidermilk might be a ''Flaming Row'' type band, meaning, not exactly suitable for this tournament. |

04.09.22 | It's been a tough round, especially considering I have trouble voting the alt-prog Mercury Tree which I also like more. If I liked them equally, then I would have to vote for A Drop of Light, as more representing of the tournament's nature. However, I think I prefer Spidermilk, and I believe it's a more forward thinking album, incorporating a long history of influences, but also trying to sound fresh and innovative (succeeding with varying degrees).
So, yes, I'm going with Spidermilk (4), even if A Drop of Light (3.5) is a delightful album, and meticulously produced, it just misses that little oomph to make me like it more (a problem I have with Anglagard as well) |

04.09.22 | @Myth; I already knew A Drop Of Light, since its release (I am the one who added it in the database). So my ear is used to it. Yes, it's pretty homogenic, and when it's not it is really good (for instance the western-type horns on second track), but five 18-minute tracks are an overkill and it goes on and on and on, and while it's beautiful, it should (= I would) concentrate on certain ideas. |
Jethro42
04.09.22 | Once more, there's still hope for Spidermilk. Score moves like a wave! |
Jethro42
04.09.22 | @Myth; Both albums don't develop enough in the songwriting department. A Drop Of Light would be better after trimming a bit, and Spidermilk must go a notch further, deeper in their compositions: A step is missing, but it's great party music. |
porcupinetheater
04.09.22 | Okay yeah tough match up, lots of love for both these records
A Drop of Light is more traditionally in my wheelhouse, with its consistently dark, little bit eerie, little bit zonked out mood pressing so many good buttons.
Spidermilk, though. The way it incorporates moments of legitimate warmth into the songwriting and then warps those moments with slow shifts into the microtonalities, god damn. Adds a whole other layer of unsettling atmosphere, and undercuts it’s beauty until the whole thing feels off-balance. Such an interesting approach, and really stands out.
Both would win in just about any other match up here for me, but since I gotta choose, I’m voting Spidermilk |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.09.22 | I'll go with Spidermilk it has a great mix of modern adventurous moments with older classic tinges at times (like Yes for example)

04.09.22 | What a reversal! It was a so, so tough match. Congrats Friday, and best chance next time, e21. I'm sure everybody appreciated these discoveries, given the big majority hesitated between both. |

04.09.22 | Wow, I’m glad me dropping the ball on this week didn’t factor in. I was leaning towards a drop of light but really can’t say enough to vote yet. My last listen of it was not satisfactory for me to say how much I liked it exactly |

04.09.22 | Lol, what a round! Liked Spidermilk and I could definitely be sadder about losing the album I voted for |

04.09.22 | Why death to me now Diva? I’m probably voting the same as you. I can’t help that I cannot vote twice |

04.09.22 | I’ll definitely vote soon. Wednesday is my last big exam for this semester so I’ll try to catch up to listening after that |

04.10.22 | ''How many votes does bgillesp get again?''
I wasn't sure what you meant (the francophone in me), Diva. I got what you said when I saw bgillesp's comment;
''I can’t help that I cannot vote twice''

04.10.22 | I am quite surprised Spidermilk pulled through! e21, your pick is great and I thought for sure mine was a goner. Great music all around! |

04.11.22 | Only now I see the final score of this journey because I was very busy and absent of my home all the weekend. And I must confess that I was very surprised and almost shocked. How was possible that in the end of last friday, the last time I saw it, the score was 5 to 9 and one day after it finished 11 to 9. That is something surrealistic. Jethro probably would said: C'est la vie. But I think there's another explanation, a real explanation. The only thing that can explain that is Diva's curse, of course and undoubtedly. Lol.
Now, seriously. This was a very interesting journey, very emotional with two great albums. As I mentioned before, I also liked Friday's album very much. Despite I prefer mine, also looks good the victory of Spidermilk.
So, congrats Friday for the next phase with your winner. Let's prossegue to the next journey. |

04.11.22 | A little late, but here are my thoughts on both albums and why I voted for Mercury Tree:
Personally, I'm not a fan of heavy use of semi-tones in modern music. In my opinion there's a reason the western world has used the tonality we have for hundreds of years, and there are enough new things to discover within this (in my eyes small) boundary.
I've always felt that the use of semi-tones is interesting, but very, very rarely results in something that I consider fun to listen to. I've found it mostly more annoying and deterring than anything else. What The Mercury Tree have done here actually surprised me a lot. Yes there are points where I still actively dislike the use of weird dissonances etc. But then there are points where they've actually managed to make it catchy and work, like in the very strong songs "Arc of an Ilk" into "I'll Pay". The musicianship was very good and the vocals reminded me of Amplifier which I enjoyed well enough.
All Traps on Earth's record was quite interesting as well. I enjoyed the versatility and the use of both brass and woodwinds on different parts. It had it's highs and low's, but never really grabbed my attention, which is probably because of the lack of listens I've been able to get in last week. So might not be the most balanced opinion, but the fact that Mercury Tree actually surprised where All Traps on Earth didn't was the biggest factor for me. Both where strong contenders in my opinion! |

04.11.22 | Thank you for your write up, Scheumke. Too bad you haven't the time to listen to A Drop Of Light more. It takes time to sink in, really. The majority of the people seemed to toss a coin to declare their winner (it's an image) |

04.16.22 | I can officially vote for A Drop of Light now. It was as I suspected, but I wanted to be sure with a truly engaged listen first. |
