2Ksperus: A Retrospective

In celebration of reaching 2000 ratings on this here website, here’s a self-indulgent, navel-gazing look back at some notable ratings in hesperus history.
15ive
Hesperus

(4.0) The source of my username. Though I do like this album a lot, I chose the name more because I thought it sounded cool, rather than out of any particular affinity for the music.
2Isis
Panopticon

(5.0) My first ever rating. It makes sense in retrospect, because one of the reasons I chose to join Sputnikmusic in the first place was its appreciation for albums like this that I loved so much.
3Psyopus
Odd Senses

(1.0) An important milestone in any Sputniker’s development: my first 1. I think I was recommended this band by iTunes or Pandora because I was into bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan and The Number Twelve Looks Like You, and Psyopus is similarly mathy and aggressive. The difference is that DEP and #12LLY are listenable.
4Gospel
The Moon Is a Dead World

(5.0) The first 5 that Sputnikmusic introduced to me. I saw it in the “Top 100 Albums of the Decade” feature, and upon hearing the first few moments of “Congratulations…You’ve Hit Bottom,” I was hooked. Though I had heard and loved screamo albums before (Circle Takes the Square, United Nations), it was Gospel, along with Kidcrash and Off Minor, that sent me down a rabbit hole of devouring as much of the genre as I could find.
5Sailors With Wax Wings
Sailors With Wax Wings

(4.0) My first review for the site. I had become fascinated with the mysterious R. Loren ever since I first heard the bananas-experimental Pyramids, so when he released two new projects, I figured I had to write a review for one of them. It definitely reads like a first review; it’s a bit repetitive and meandering, and weirdly devoid of descriptions of the actual music. But I’m proud of it all the same.

Side note: It turns out R. Loren is Rich Balling of The Sound of Animals Fighting, another band I was really into at the time. That was a fun surprise, though in retrospect we all should have seen it coming.
6Oceansize
Effloresce

(4.5) My 500th rating. This is another band that I heard about from Sputnikmusic first, as are many of the bands that I’ve grown to love since I joined in 2010.
7Janelle Monae
The ArchAndroid

(4.0) My 1000th rating. I don’t have much to say about this album from a nostalgic perspective, except that it’s a damn cool album that you should check out if you haven’t already.
8YOB
Atma

(3.5) My 1500th rating. Back when pirating music was as easy as typing “[album title] mediafire” into Google, I built up a huge backlog of albums that I wanted to check out, and for a long time I neglected that collection. This rating came on the tail end of a several-months-long process of finally going through that backlog. That process prompted me to break a Sputnikmusic hiatus that I had started around 2013, so that I could have some way to catalog all the albums I was listening to.
9Day Old Man
Prolapsed Brainus

(3.5) My first review post-hiatus. This is a local band that I saw open for Torche back in January 2016. I liked them enough that I thought they deserved a bit of exposure, so I wrote up a short two-paragraph review of their latest album.
10Mimisiku
The Thrill of Living

(4.5) My first feature, and one of my favorite of my own reviews. I discovered this album through one of the “Sputnikmusic News” posts. I fell in love with it, and I’m really proud of how I was able to explain why so effectively. The review also got a shout-out on Facebook from the band and the label, which was a nice bit of recognition.

Side note: I met Parker and Miles recently when they played a local house show as Two Knights. They’re both really cool, down-to-earth people.
11clipping.
Splendor and Misery

(5.0) My other favorite of my own reviews. When I saw what lukewarm reception this album was getting, I figured a defense of the album was in order, and I think I did a pretty good job, if I do say so myself. I still think Splendor and Misery is one of the most brilliant works of science fiction in recent years.
12Blanck Mass
World Eater

(4.5) My first review as a contributor. If you compare it to my Sailors With Wax Wings review, it’s a decent testament to my development as a writer. I’m more economical with my words, and a greater proportion of the review is spent actually describing the music.

Side note: This is still a solid contender for my AOTY.
13Irepress
Sol Eye Sea I

(3.5) And here it is, my 2000th rating. Dctarga recommended this to me as part of a collaborative game I’m taking part in (see here: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1052092 ), and I think that’s a pretty neat example of what my ratings mean. For the most part, they’re just a simple way to catalog my thoughts on the albums I’ve heard, but in a way, they’re also an expression of my relationship with the site and its users.
