| Metal Wreckage: September | 1 | | Emancer Twilight and Randomness
This album is one of the biggest surprises of the year. Superbly crafted progressive black metal. The Opeth influence is obvious here: beautiful, sample-driven ambiance as well as a good mix of clean and harsh vocals. If you enjoy progressive metal and/or Opeth, this album won't disappoint. | 2 | | Gloomy Grim Under the Spell of the Unlight
One of my top albums of the year. Outstandingly dark melodic/symphonic black metal from Finland. Anyone who likes their music immersed in heavy atmosphere should look into this release. | 3 | | Desire Locus Horrendus - The Night Cries Of A Sullen Soul
Certainly one of the most beautiful metal albums you will ever hear. This unknown band from Portugal has created, quite possibly, the best doom metal album no one has ever heard. Perfect clean vocals, low, gutteral growls, soul-crushingly depressing guitar melodies, and excellent, emotional piano-driven moments create one of the best atmospheres I have ever heard. This is a must-listen for ALL doom metal fans and just good fucking music, in general. | 4 | | Exmortus In Hatred's Flame
Some may remember Exmortus from South's review of the EP (by the same name) the band released last year. As if they could display any more technical ability, they've added five new songs to release their full length debut and it is a behemoth. Expertly crafted technical/thrash metal and one of my top 10 contenders for album of the year. | 5 | | Mythological Cold Towers Sphere of Nebaddon
Epic old school doom/death metal with clear-cut Candlemass and Solitude Aeternus influence. For all fans of the first wave of doom metal. | 6 | | Allegiance [SWE] Hymns of Blod
From a criminally-overlooked blackened death/viking metal band comes this nasty compilation album. Aggressive, violent, and occasionally progressive, Allegiance shows why they deserve more attention than they ever received with their final release. | 7 | | Terra Impressionum TI:tanium
Supremely-executed, symphony-fueled avant garde black/doom metal from the Ukraine. Fans of any and all avant garde metal will love this. | 8 | | Weeping Birth Anosognosic Industry of the I
Vlad Cochet is on a fucking roll this year. His second release in 2008 proves to be a phenomenal black metal-injected piece of technical/brutal death metal mastery. This is rapidly climbing my list of top 2008 releases. Not to be missed. | 9 | | Myrath Hope
The first ever Tunisian metal band to sign a record deal puts out a quality, full length debut with Hope. I cannot explain how much they sound like Symphony X, even the vocals are barely discernible. | 10 | | Ares Kingdom Firestorms and Chaos
This death/thrash metal band produces some of the best riffs I've heard in a long time. Brutal stuff. | 11 | | Until Death Overtakes Me Symphony III: Monolith
Out of the doom metal project Until Death Overtakes Me from the unheralded ambient metal genius that is Stijn Van Cauter comes one of the thickest doom metal albums I have ever listened to. This man knows how to create an atmosphere that will haunt you in your sleep. Another must for all doom metal fans. | 12 | | Dred A Path To Extinction
Very rarely does a twenty-something minute EP hit me as hard as this one did. The level of technical/thrash metal musicianship displayed here is awe-inspiring. Very headbangable. | 13 | | Hermh Before the Eden - Awaiting the Fire
Not your typical symphonic black metal. Instead of slow-mid tempo melody-laden riffs, Hermh drives their songs with very technically-complex riffs. Extremely enjoyable with a lot of replay value. | 14 | | Kartikeya The Battle Begins
Quality Russian death metal with a good deal of Indian and middle eastern influence. A very ethnic-sounding metal album. | 15 | | Insision Ikon
Excellent brutal death metal out of Stockholm, Sweden. | 16 | | Schaliach Sonrise
Beautifully somber and classically-influenced old school melodic death/doom metal. One of the few metal albums I would ever dare to call "classy". | 17 | | Theudho Cult of Wuotan
A solid 2008 release and definitely one of the best pagan/black metal records to come out this year. For fans of Arkona, Heol Telwen, Gernotshagen, and Thronar. | 18 | | Aphotic Failure EP
The final EP of a very talented doom metal band. Unfortunately, as in most of Aphotic's releases, Failure is plagued by abrupt song endings which interrupt and ultimately ruin, otherwise, perfect songs. | 19 | | Maitreya New World Prophecy
An interesting mix of melodic death/doom/thrash metal. While almost oxymoronic, the combination of doom and thrash metal works, kind of. Much of the album sounds forced, which may happen when you attempt to merge two genres that should stay separate. But, enjoyable, nonetheless. | 20 | | Autumnal Grey Universe
A decent Spanish doom metal album that proves to have more replay value than it deserves. | |

09.04.08 | Well my point of asking was that I don't want to go through all of these to find something I might enjoy. Enough people on here know what I like to be nice enough to recommend stuff. | Lunarfall
09.04.08 | That Ares Kingdom album wasn't all that great tbh. | DBlitz
09.04.08 | I haven't even gone through the stuff I got from your last list yet. I'm really interested in 3 and 4, maybe 12 | Zoo
09.04.08 | @ ASberg: Really? That's surprising. I haven't encountered anyone that has disliked it.
@ Balls: Thanks but I hate writing so fucking much. I wish I had the patience to review consistently but I don't.
@ Poet: For you, I'd suggest 3, 7, 9, and 13.
@ Willie: Make sure you look into 5 as well. I don't really see any way you won't like it.
@ hey123: Well, I enjoyed the hell out of it. There's a lot here I think you'd like.
@ DBlitz: 3 and 4 are definitely worth your time. | asdemonsburn
