| My Top 25 Albums Of 2014
Check out my favorite music of 2014! Keep in mind this is only my opinion, and I am by no means a rmusic connoisseur. I've made this list from a pool of around 60 albums I've listened to from this year, rwhich is, in the grand scheme of things, a small number. But I really liked this music, and thought I'd rshare! Honorable Mention: Hesitant Alien (Gerard Way), Mind Over Matter (Young The Giant) rDishonorable Mention: Atomos (Winged Victory for the Sullen), Turn Blue (The Black Keys) | 25 | | La Roux Trouble In Paradise
Genre: Synth Pop
Favorite Tracks: Kiss and Not Tell, Sexotheque, Tropical Chancer | 24 | | Thom Yorke Tomorrow's Modern Boxes
Genre: Electronic
Favorite Tracks: Interference, There Is No Ice, Nose Grow Some | 23 | | The Contortionist Language
Genre: Progressive Rock
Favorite Tracks: Language I:Intuition, Thrive | 22 | | Parquet Courts Content Nausea
Just a fun Indie pop band, sometimes dreadfully unoriginal, but mostly fun. Apparently they had released another album in 2014, but I never got
around to listening to that one, but this will do quite nicely.
Genre: Indie Pop
Favorite Tracks: Content Nausea, Pretty Machines, Uncast Shadow of a Southern Myth | 21 | | Wildbirds and Peacedrums Rhythm | 20 | | Mogwai Rave Tapes
Mogwai was the band that introduced me to post rock and experimental music, and they're still chugging along. They're a little strange, but I
don't think that you're all that normal either.
Genre: Post Rock, Experimental Rock
Favorite Tracks: Hexon Bogon, Simon Ferocious, Blues Hour | 19 | | Avi Buffalo At Best Cuckold
There's nothing crazy about this album. The humorous lyrics and straightforward instrumentation makes for an easy listen at any time.
Genre: Indie Pop
Favorite Tracks: Memories of You, Oxygen Tank, Overwhelmed with Pride | 18 | | Weezer Everything Will Be Alright In the End
Weezer's last few albums had fans willfully pretending that they didn't exist. Well no more! Although Everything Will Be Alright In The End
has more than it's fair share of duds, there are more than enough tracks that proclaim the return of the Weezer we love. However, this
comes at the cost of Weezer pushing their sound, something Rivers Cuomo openly admits in Back to the Shack. The new Weezer album is to
be appreciated for the return of classic Weezer, but it feels a little like they've settled.
Genre: Alternative Rock
Favorite Tracks: Eulogy for a Rock Band, The British are Coming, the trilogy at the end | 17 | | Asgeir In The Silence
A singer/songwriter from Iceland (Kevin approves), Asgeir's vocals are something to behold. Although the lyrics do suffer slightly from the
translation from Icelandic to English, In the Silence is a calming and beautiful album.
Genre: Indie Folk
Favorite Tracks: Torrent, In Harmony, King and Cross | 16 | | My Brightest Diamond This is My Hand
This is My Hand is a nicely orchestrated pop album, with theatrical elements seamlessly woven in, giving the album extra flair. The lyrics in this
album are compelling and artfully delivered. However, the main vocals lack punch and versatility, which holds the album back in some respects.
Genre: Chamber Pop
Favorite Tracks: This Is My Hand, Pressure | 15 | | Nickel Creek A Dotted Line
Nickel Creek is back! Their coherence was missed, and it seems that they haven't skipped a beat in their time apart.
Genre: Folk, Acoustic
Favorite Tracks: 21st of May, Elephant in the Corn, Elsie | 14 | | The Pains of Being Pure at Heart Days of Abandon
Angsty band name aside, this sugary pop sound is infectious. Some might say that the clean sound of this new album crosses over into 'boring'
territory, but
Genre:
Favorite Tracks: Eurydice, Kelly, Poison Touch | 13 | | 3rdeyegirl PLECTRUMELECTRUM
The vocal duels/duets between 3rdeyegirl and Prince are really catchy! On top of that, the trio's instrumentation sounds daring and bold, without
becoming messy. Would recommend.
Genre: Funk
Favorite Tracks: WOW, FIXURLIFEUP | 12 | | Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Psychology
Psychology is a worthwhile listen for the most part, but there isn't enough variety in the style to keep the album afloat the whole way. A few
songs just feel blah.
Genre: Funk Rock
Favorite Tracks: Moonwalk, Upfunk, Sydeko | 11 | | Greylag Greylag
I'm not exactly sure how to describe Greylag's sound. The best I can say is that it's ...rainy? They call to mind the Fleet Foxes in terms of the
vocals, and the instrumentation varies between heavier punk and a light sound. I could listen to this album under rain or shine, and so should
you!
Genre: Moody/ Atmospheric(?) Rock
Favorite Tracks: Another, Burn On, Walk The Night | 10 | | When Last We Met Damascus
Genre: Post Rock, Experimental Rock
Favorite Tracks: When Last We Met, Everything Was Burning | 9 | | The Wytches Annabel Dream Reader
Genre: Lo-Fi Garage Rock
Favorite Tracks: Gravedweller, Weights and Ties, Burn Out the Bruise | 8 | | Silver Mt. Zion Fuck Off Get Free
That this album can be so full of noise and make it into my Top 10 is saying something. Messing with the EQ while listening to tracks from this
album reveals tons of intricate arrangements hidden beneath the main riffs. The middle of this album does feel a little too heavy for my liking,
but overall, the lyrics and string arrangement is impressive enough to warrant a listen.
Genre: Sludge, Experimental Rock
Favorite Tracks: Austerity Blues, Take Away These Early Grave Blues | 7 | | Bombay Bicycle Club So Long, See You Tomorrow
A very solid indie album from start to finish. I don't have any complaints about BBC's latest effort, and it's the most upbeat album out of the
Top 10, so that's gotta count for something!
Genre: Indie Rock
Favorite Tracks: Overdone, Luna, So Long, See You Tomorrow | 6 | | Sun Kil Moon Benji
I actually don't know why I like this album. I would have thought that the singer's voice would grow wearisome quickly, and indeed, some of
the latter songs did drag a little bit. But on the whole, the skillful narration of the singer's experiences drew me in. Probably not something to
blast during a road trip, but I'd say this album is worth a listen.
Genre: Folk Rock
Favorite Tracks: Carissa, I Can't Live Without My Mother's Love | 5 | | Imogen Heap Sparks
Genre: Indie Pop, Electronic
Favorite Tracks: Entanglement, Propeller Seeds, Climb to Sakteng | 4 | | Bent Knee Shiny Eyed Babies
Genre: Art Rock
Favorite Tracks: Sunshine, Way Too Long, Skin | 3 | | Alt-J This Is All Yours
I was originally really nervous for this sophomore effort of Alt-J, This Is All Yours. The sound from their first album was so unique and fun,
that I thought that this album would either be a cheap facsimile of their original sound, or so different that it would detract from their sound.
Needless to say, my fears were proved to be groundless. Alt-J has managed to retain it's identity, while expanding its musical horizons
tastefully, and the result is wonderful.
Genre: Indie Rock
Favorite Tracks: Nara, Warm Foothills, Choice Kingdom | 2 | | FKA Twigs LP1
FKA Twigs, at one point known as Twigs, is an artist to watch. LP1, her first LP, is a journey into a twisted world, where only FKA Twig's voice
exists to guide you. She also demonstrates quite a bit of vocal versatility.
Genre: Trip hop, Experimental R&B
Favorite Tracks: Two Weeks, Pendulum | 1 | | St. Vincent St. Vincent
Wow. What a pleasure to the auditory system. St. Vincent's versatile vocals alternate between raw power in Rattlesnake to crooning away in
Severed Crossed Fingers (which sounds like Janelle Monae's Mushrooms & Roses!). I can't find many complaints about this album, if any. If
you haven't listened to this masterpiece yet, then I've set your plans for the next hour.
Genre: Art Rock
Favorite Tracks: Rattlesnake, Prince Johnny, Bring Me Your Loves, Severed Crossed Fingers | |
