10White Hinterland
Baby

Casey Dienel recorded most of her third record as White Hinterland on her
own, and that personal feeling pervades the album. Tricky beats and powerful,
passionate singing combine with painfully vulnerable lyrics. More often than not, the
lyrics don't even rhyme. But it doesn't matter. This is dark, beguiling poetry, and
Dienel is truly one to keep an eye on (and I wish more people would look her way).
Best track: Baby.
9Sun Kil Moon
Benji

Say what you will about his (admittedly, increasingly childish) internet beef or
Grouchy Old Man persona, Mark Kozelek made one of the best records of the year,
and that's just that. Benji consists of deep longing, intimate secrets, and spooling
family stories. It is grounded, spare, tear-jerking, lovingly produced, and doesn't
waste a single moment. Sometimes, simple honesty is the best policy. Best track:
Micheline.
8Owen Pallett
In Conflict

Owen Pallett continues to release brilliant, arty, complex records. In Conflict is his
most varied and passionate-sounding yet, with hooky melodies, deep bass lines,
sparkly electronics, and typically astounding strings. One of the best-
produced/engineered albums of the year (check those resonant horns on Chorale),
with Pallett showing yet again why his solo work is such a vital voice in current music.
Best track: Song for Fix & Six.
7Orenda Fink
Blue Dream

On the surface, this seems like a very typical Saddle Creek indie-rock record, but dig
a little deeper and you'll find a moving, triumphant, gorgeous record of loss and
progress. Inspired by dreams and the loss of her beloved dog, Fink has crafted a
smart record of profound melancholy, but also surprising hope. This may not have
been the out-and-out best record of the year, but no other record meant more to me.
Best track: Holy Holy.
6St. Vincent
St. Vincent

I am not sure how St. Vincent's fourth record could have been better than her third -
it would have been a true shock - but it's still a very, very solid art-record. Annie
Clark's robotic rocker shtick is not growing old despite it growing more blunt, and her
songwriting is intricate, catchy, and intelligent. This is a tight, tense, bright record,
and though occasionally stiff, Clark shreds and rocks and snarls, and it all coalesces
nicely. Best track: Digital Witness.
5Perfume Genius
Too Bright

Mike Hadreas struck gold with his sophomore record, Put Your Back N 2 It, but that
doesn't mean its follow up is anything like a disappointment. In fact, it's full of bold,
new directions for Hadreas and co, and the songwriting shines throughout. Powerful,
brazen, and frequently moving and beautiful, Hadreas may have struck gold again.
Best track: Fool.
4FKA twigs
LP1

Finally, the alternative R&B realm has a clear winner, someone who can be called a
pioneer of the genre at some later date. twigs has been around a little while, but her
debut album was a huge success, sporting minimalistic, interesting, layered beats and
synths, as well as twigs' trademark high whisper voice. Intoxicating, spellbinding, and
constantly surprising. Best track: Pendulum.
3Marissa Nadler
July

Another sad, sad record. (I promise I'm so much fun at parties). Nadler's songwriting
and guitar playing continue to improve, and this record is startling in its willingness to
explore the aftermath of a brittle breakup. It recounts a difficult year in Nadler's life,
and though it can be difficult to listen to such intimate thoughts, it's also a grand
beauty. Best track: Holiday in.
2Grouper
Ruins

2014's quietest record, I would presume, it is also the most subtly heartbreaking. Liz
Harris ditches her awe-inspiring drone work for a straightforward piano and voice
record, but it is one that is suffused with sadness, loss, and honesty. Her lyrics, finally
discernible, are shattering, sung in her pretty, feathery voice. Best track: Clearing.
1tUnE-yArDs
Nikki Nack

Infectious and intelligent, this is the best of Merrill Garbus' work thus far. Ebullient
and charming, witty and abrasive, this is the real deal. And my god is it catchy as
hell. Best track: Real Thing.
