Top Ten Of 2007

My favorite ten releases of 2007. Other important releases include: Souvaris - A Hat Shugo Tokumaru - Exit Hopesfall - The Magnetic North EAQuartett - Electroacoustiquarett
1The Kidcrash
Jokes

Your ReasonKidcrash's 'Jokes' was a monolith of hope for the emotional hardcore scene. Not has a release as revolutionary for the genre been as powerful since 2005's 'The Moon is a Dead World'. Dynamic, emotional, and ferocious.
2Pharoahe Monch
Desire

Monch's second LP since his split from Organized Konfusion in '97, 'Desire' is a record that expresses and improves on everything that is wrong with hip-hop. Minimal skits, excellent beats, and some of the freshest raps ever laid to wax.
3Tartar Lamb
Sixty Metonymies

Kayo Dot's Toby Driver is a prolific and highly reliable musician when it comes to dynamic and entirely unique compositions. 'Sixty Metonymies' may have stripped Kayo Dot of their bombast, but in those darkened corners of minimalism lie some of Toby's most eccentric melodies yet. A mind blowing release beautifully accented by Mia Matsumiya's absolutely incredible violin playing.
4Time of Orchids
Namesake Caution

Unsurpassed in their flirtation of pop with neo-classical and metal, New York's Time of Orchids are certainly a one of a kind band. 'Namesake Caution' embraces their most proggy, poppy side but not with a hefty slice of dissonance. Nobody sounds like Time of Orchids and that is where their greatness lies.
5 Richard Youngs
Autumn Response

Tricks of tape looping and off time vocals does Richard Youngs use on his new release this year. A beautiful and heartfelt journey that ranges from two minute long experiments to a closer that rivals any of fellow acoustic player Ben Chansy's drug induced jams.
6108
A New Beat from a Dead Heart

Who'd expect a hardcore relic to release one of the most personal releases of 2007? 108 shocked alot of fans with probably the finest hardcore record since Modern Life's 'Witness'. Instead of attacking the suburban perspective most hardcore fights for, 108 guise their feelings in realms of religious freedom and their Krishna beliefs.
7 Oh No
Dr. No's Oxperiment

Madlib's younger brother releases some of the finest beats ever put to wax. Gracious helpings of European prog. rock and basically Rush without the theatrics of Geddy Lee and their nerd upbringing.
8 Meet Me in St. Louis
Variations in Swing

Minus the Bear meets Tera Melos. Cool yet refined and incredibly interesting math rock.
9 Tusk
The Resisting Dreamer

This is easy to explain. Toby Driver and Breather Resist's Evan Patterson team up with 3/4ths of Pelican and record one of the most noisy, expressions of emotion to date. See Battle of Mice's 'A Day of Nights' for comparison.
10 Charles Mingus
Cornell 1964

Mingus' quartet joins Eric Dolphy in a match of unmatchable grandiose. The brilliant corners of this live performance blow the mind and to think it was only released this year is a shame. A defining moment in both amazing musicians' lives.
