As is also in evidence on Cooder's most recent releases, he's a poor to mediocre song writer. The few songs by him that are great (Across the Borderline, Down in Hollywood) have always been co-written by others. This albums contains mostly original songs by Cooder, and therefore really slides into mediocrity, the only highlights being the few covers.
