Review Summary: Megasus is a band that no one would probably know if it wasn't for Guitar Hero

Megasus is a band featuring a member that works for the company that makes the game Guitar Hero. He slips a song into the bonus songs in the game to get some exposure. They were very little known even with their privelidge of being featured on the game. Normally I wouldn't have checked this out but the one song I'd heard from them before getting this album was "Red Lottery" which is the best song on the album.

There really isn't a reoccuring formula on the album, the only objective is to throwdown some sick, memorable riffs. In some cases this works but in others not so much. The influence Electric Wizard amoung many other bands is very noticable throughout "Megasus". On the majority of the albums tracks the riffs do not blend with the drum patterns in anyway, and the drums are too loud in the mix. The drummer has some decent variation in his playing, but with as loud as he is in the mix it almost becomes annoying, in some sections he does put down some memorable rhythms. The bassist is heard the majority of the album but he mainly just follows the lead of the guitarist. It does add to the deep end of this cd though, and do to the fact that this is a doom metal record this is a plus.

The main thing that causes this album to be an average attempt is the vocals. They are far too low in the mix. They way they are done in a way reminds me of "Dopethrone" era Electric Wizard, just not as good. It seems as though with the instrumental showing that a totally different vocal style would've done this more justice. His voice is heavily distorted, and the majority of the album he stays in his comfort zone which consists of a nostalgia moan with the occasional yell. This gets very boring during the duration of the record, and the distortion gets quite a bit annoying.

If you have the stomach to get through the boring vocal performance then the heavy, thick, droney guitars should make up for it. Overall this just seems like a compilation of songs, the tracks don't seem to go together as a whole and absolutely nothing is cohesive. The individual songs are good, this makes it pretty hard to sit through the whole album. This is a good listen every now and then but when your in the mood for some stoner metal "Dopethrone" is a much more interesting choice. If you get bored with what are considered classics in this genre this is a decent listen, not essential but worth at least one listen.

Overall I give this a 3 out of 5. "Megasus" is very good in small doses, like one song at a time. The album has very little replay value, but with tracks like "Red Lottery" and "Iron Mountain" it is hard to call this a bad record, the only thing is if this band is going to release another album they need to find their own sound, because with this they are sitting on the fence between good and mediocore. The bottom line is check this album out if your into metal, but only if you already have the classics in the Stoner/Doom sub-genre.

Red Lottery was so boring to play on GH but it was a decent song I suppose.

Really this is best to listen to while stoned, I know that sounds stupid but Red Lottery kind of puts you in a trance when you are in that state of mind.

Well I got this, and it's okay I guess. Megasus is by far my favourite track here. The lack of solos is kind of annoying, and many of the songs go on for too long.

Yeah it's very draggy and average, my 3 is kind of generous.
